At the beginning of the play, Othello explains how he and Desdemona fell in love when Brabantio rose against Othello saying that he seduced his daughter, Desdemona, using charms and spells because of Iagos’ convincing. Othello “She loved me for the dangers that I had passed, and I loved her that she did pity them.” In this particular scene, it also shows how Desdemona did love Othello because she pledges her love for him. Desdemona “That I did love the Moor to live with him, my downright violence and storm of fortunes….. Let me go with him.” Othello and Desdemona’s relationship was introduced in the play as a strong and admirable relationship because of the love they had for one another. The play shows how much jealousy occurred. The jealousy Othello had between Desdemona and Cassio, Iago’s jealousy over Othello and Cassio and Roderigo’s jealousy over Othello. The main jealousy which abused love was the jealousy Othello had between Desdemona and Cassio. At first, when Iago was stirring things up in Othello’s mind, Othello felt suspicious already about Desdemona’s relationship with Cassio. His suspicions and jealousy took place to the fact where he told Iago to observe Desdemona, Othello “Farewell, farewell. If more thou dost perceive, let me know more; set on thy wife to observe”. The more he got jealous, the more anger Othello expressed. In ACT 4, Othello strikes Desdemona because he assumes that she was excited about Cassio. Othello asks Emilia about Desdemona’s infidelity and when Emilia tells him that Desdemona is faithful and innocent, Othello refuses to believe her. This clearly indicated that Othello distrusted Desdemona even though he says that he loves Desdemona ‘too well’. Othello “Of one that loved not wisely, but too well; of one not easily jealous but, being wrought.” Can a person love someone and at the same time not have trust in them?


The play illustrates that the reason why Othello killed Desdemona because he assumed that Desdemona was being unfaithful to him by Iago telling him that. This caused jealousy in Othello each time Iago spoke of Cassio and Desdemona’s behaviour to one another. The extreme jealousy occurs when Iago convinces Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are also having a sexual relationship. By this time, Othello was convinced enough by Iago’s manipulation and requests that Desdemona and Cassio will die.

During all this time of Othello’s jealousy and anger, Desdemona has been faithful to him throughout the whole play. Although she does not know that Othello is suspicious of her, she sees him angry around her and she believes that it must have been from the war he came back from. But as Othello’s anger increases to the point where he strikes at Desdemona and calls her a whore, Desdemona is left to feel confuse about Othello’s anger. Desdemona “O good Iago, what shall I do to win my lord again? Good friend, go to him; for, by this light of heaven, I know not how I lost him.” Othello had left Desdemona confused, because of him not questioning her about his suspicions and just waiting for more evidence until his anger grew too strong that it could even take away Desdemona’s life.


Clearly, Othello the play showed the concepts of the eternal triangle where Othello was supposedly the victim, Desdemona being the persecutor and Cassio being the rescuer. Jealousy and the lack of trust could be poisonous in a relationship. It could lead to a tragic ending like Desdemona who was killed by the one she loved, respected, trust and even faithful to, Othello. The question remains unanswered when Othello claims that he loved Desdemona ‘too well’ and he killed her because all along he thought that she was unfaithful to him by Iago telling him that she was.
