The financial summary provides a statistical summary of the past and complements the company-specific analysis. A financial statement analysis of a company begins with the assumption that the statements are not misleading or fraudulent. Although, with publicly traded stocks, a CPA is required to supervise the statements, firms have flexibility in their use of accounting methods. This may exaggerate or inflate earnings in audited data. The analyst who is studying the historical data aims at preparing an estimate of current earnings power. This is used as a platform for future earnings projections.

An analyst should start with raw material including, the income statement, the balance sheet, the statement of cash flows, and possible footnotes to the data. Then, four primary tools are used for the evaluation of corporate performance. These are, absolute amount change, percentage changes in growth, common size percentage statements, and financial ratios, and should be used over a three-to-five year period.

“THY WILL BE DONE”

Scene 1 (Rick is sitting center stage, hands out of sight, speaking with god in anguish)

Rick

Father I do not understand. I have tried to follow you but I have failed. All I asked was to be like everyone else. Why have you abandoned me?? Father I can’t do this anymore.

Our father who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name,

Thy will be done..(Raises his right hand in which we now see a gun, places it to his head)

MR.J

NOOOOOOOOO!!

(Blackout)(Loud gunshot rings through audience)

(Lights come up on Julie doing homework as we hear a knock on her door)

Julie

Mike what’s up? (Mike stand speechless)

Michael what’s wrong!! Michael YOUR SCARING ME!!

Mike

I should have seen this coming…I should have known

Julie

What should you have known?

Mike

He ended it…He ended everything. (Julie still not understanding)

Julie

Michael just tell me what is going on please…MIKE!! (Grabbing him) MICHAEL HE WHAT!!! TELL ME!!!

Mike

He’s gone! He took his father’s gun and shot himself!! After all we’ve been through. I’m responsible for this. This is all my fault. (They embrace)

Julie

What will we do now?

Mike

Julie has been wonderful to me ever since we started seeing each other about years ago. She means the world to me and I would do anything for her, as I would do for any of my closest friends.(Spotlight on Rick) WHY!! Why did you do this to us? Why couldn’t you come and talk to me!! (Back to the audience) I’m not really sure where we really went wrong. We have been friends forever and I know everything about him and it kills me that I didn’t see this coming. I would have to say looking back that the first sign of anything would have to be the day of our rally for the big basketball game that we had coming up.

Scene

(Lights come up Rick joins Mike walking back from the rally)

Mike

You know I think that rally was the best one that we have had yet.

Rick

You know everyone is going to be at that game. Then after we crush Oakridge it’s off to districts. Nothing can stop us now. (Slap each other five) Is Julie coming tomorrow night?

Mike

(Stopping to tie his shoes)

She better be there I went to everyone of her damn volleyball games and I hate volleyball. Hey man I almost forgot, Julie’s birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and I want you and Michelle to have dinner with us.

Rick

Where?

Mike

Don’t know I haven’t decided yet. You candles, some soft music, the works and I want both of you there. (Rick pulls a flask out of his bag) Want some? Have a sip.

Mike

No man I thought we had talked about that.

Rick

We did I don’t all the time …Take it easy

Mike

Yeah well you do it a hell of a lot more than you used to.

Rick

Don’t worry about me dude I can take care of myself.

Mike

Do your parents know about this yet?

(Rick laughs)

Rick

Do you think I would still be alive if my parents knew about this. Holy God!

Mike

I’ll take that as a no.

Rick

I thought that my dad was going to kill me when I told him that Michelle and have been sleeping together.

Mike

He knows?

Rick

Oh yeah knows. I had to remind him to breath a couple of times because his face was turning colors but I told him.

Mike

Why did you tell him?

Rick

Well he would have found out one way or the other. My mother walked in on us having sex one afternoon last week. I was hoping that she hasn’t had sex in so long that she would have forgotten what it looks like but that was doubtful. SO I thought it best if I told him myself.

Mike

Good thinking.

Rick

My dad is such a loser. All he ever talks about is him wanting me to be some pro basketball player you know? He used to hit me ALL the time because I supposedly “Asked for it”. I don’t recall ever saying “if you don’t mind would you knock me around the house? I mean if you have a minute?” I’m afraid one day he’s really going to hurt me. He shouldn’t be too upset with my grades this term. I got all A’s and B’s except for one C+ in Pre Calculus. Mike man I don’t know, Lately it’s been so hard to keep my grades up. Pleasing my parent’s would take a miracle from the almighty, nevermind playing basketball. That’s why I resort to a drink to relax me you see? It actually help’s me more than anything else.

Mike

Well I don’t know about that. Just don’t let it control your life alright? (Michelle joins them on stage)

Rick

Trust me alright? Look I have to go, give me a call later on tonight alright man? (Shake hands)

Mike

Cool. I’ll give you a call when I get from Julie’s. Michelle what’s up?

Michelle

Not much what have you been up to?

Mike

Not much where have you been hiding?

Michelle

You know how it is, work, termpapers, nevermind college.

Mike

Damn I hear that. Guy’s I have to run I’ll talk to you guys later alright? (Michelle and Rick walk offstage)(Lights come up as they walk on stage)

Michelle

Rick do you want to come over tonight and watch a movie with me?

Rick

Sure which one?

Michelle

I can’t think of the name, it came out a little while ago with Vin Diesil and someone else I can’t think of. I heard it was really good it will give us a chance to be together for a little while.

Rick

Great. What time should I come over?

Michelle

How about 70?

Rick

What time is it now?

Michelle

It’s about quarter to six.

Rick

Great let me go home and check in with my folks and I’ll be over o.k?

Michelle

Great (Michelle begins her monologue and a light comes up on Rick)

Michelle

I could never tell what was wrong with him I was always afraid to ask. I thought that it might be his parents, they are always arguing with him about everything no matter hoe insignificant the subject may seem. He would always be upset when he would come over and I would try to cheer him up, but instead we would always end up fighting over something. I love him but I couldn’t take his drinking anymore. When he started to drink it didn’t seem to be too much of a problem but now it has taken over his life. He kept on getting more and more distant to the point that he thought that no one cared for him. I tried to be there for him but he just wouldn’t let me. I didn’t know what to do!! I didn’t know what to say!! You don’t know how this feels!! (Pointing to audience) And now he’s gone and it’s all my fault!!

Scene

(In Rick’s home, his father is reading his report card)

Mr. J

(As Rick is leaving) Rick what the hell is this?

Rick

(Sarcasticly) A report card. (Mr. J slaps him and Rick is taken back)

Mr. J

You got a C+ in Pre-cal? How do you expect colleges to look at you with grades like this?

Rick

Dad I’m trying. This class is too hard for me, I’m thinking about switching to an easier math class.

Mr. J

Oh no you don’t!! I’ll go figure skating in hell the day my son takes the easy way out. Maybe if it’s so hard maybe you should stop going out at night. Actually that’s perfect your grounded until this C+ is at least a B or higher.

Rick

Dad you can’t ground me for that!!

Mr. J

Watch me….it’s done.

Rick

God damn it dad!! I bust my ass at school and just because I get a C+ in pre-cal your going to ground me? I practice all afternoon on my game, then I come home and do my homework. When I’m done with my homework I like to go out and relax alright? I’m going over Michelle’s.

Mr. J

You’ll do whatever I damn well tell you to do. I am your father or have you forgotten. You know you can’t expect DUKE or UCLA to look at you when….

Rick

Dad would you stop it? Did it ever occur to you that I may not want to go to college to play basketball??!! NO! You don’t give a damn what I think!! You never did!! Your just so damn stuck on the idea that I’m going to be this all-star basketball player. This is my life and I’m going to do what I damn well feel like doing.

Mr. J

Son why don’t you get some sleep you’ve had a long day. You need to be rested for your big game tomorrow. I remember when used to play ball…

Rick

Dad!! Would you get off my back!! I can’t take this bullshit anymore!! Just because you wasted your life doesn’t mean you can waste mine. Now stay out of my life!!

Mr. J

Rick come back here! I forbid you to leave!! (Rick continues) If you don’t stop I’m gonna…(Grabs Ricks arm)

Rick

Hit me dad go ahead…Will that make you feel like a real man? Huh? Beating on your only son? You don’t scare me anymore (Father slaps him)

(Rick walks offstage)(Mr. J looks at his hands in realization of what he has done

Mr. J

Rick I’m sorry…(But Rick is already gone)

Scene 4

(Next day at school Julie meets Rick in a hallway, Rick looks exhausted)

Julie

Rick are you alright?

Rick

No I’m not. I just studied my ass off for this test. I hate this class. I don’t know what to do anymore. (Mike enters)

Julie

Rick try not to worry things will get better. Things are…

Mike

(Interrupting)

Buddy what’s up? Ready for the big game?

Rick

Yeah I guess so.

Mike

What do you mean you guess so? We are going to tear these guys apart!! First we have to concentrate on…

Julie

(Cutting Mike off) Listen I need to go talk with Mr. Renfield about my project. Rick things will look up soon enough alright…Talk to you guys soon.

Rick

Thanks Julie

Mike

What were we talking about?... Yeah the game…(Noticing that Rick is not paying attention at all) Thank god this disease cleared up fast I don’t know what I was going to tell Julie..(Rick still not looking) Rick what’s up with you?

Rick

Nothin dude I’m fine.

Mike

Rick man you have got to get your head out of the clouds. We have to concentrate on this game, if we lose it’s all over us. I have to run but I’ll pick you up for school tomorrow at about quarter of 7 alright? (Begins to walk offstage left) Alright?

Rick

Yeah yeah of course (Pulls the flask out of the bag and takes a drink)

Scene 5

(Ricks room…There are empty bottles around him, he is unconscious)

Mike

(Knocking but no one answering) Rick buddy are you re….(He stops and see’s rick is out cold) RICK!! Come on don’t do this!! (Picks up a bottle and looks at it) Damn it Rick not now. God please wake up we have a game tonight!! You selfish son of a bitch get up!! (Mike tries to get Rick up but Rick can barely stand) Snap out of it Rick. If you don’t go to school then you can’t play in the game tonight!! Damn it!! I’m getting Michelle and Julie for help I don’t know what to do (Mike walks offstage and the lights go out)

(Julie and Michelle walk in with Mike, Michelle goes directly to Rick)

Michelle

Not again.

Mike

What do you mean again?

Michelle

I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want him to get into trouble. He’s been drinking a lot when things would bother him too much. He’s been getting more and more depressed lately and I don’t know what to do. Sometimes he gets so distant that it scares me.

Mike

You didn’t want to get him in trouble? What the hell do you think this is for him? Would you mind explaining that to me. What the hell is wrong with you michelle!!

Michelle

Mike listen Rick is…

Mike

No!! You listen! Tonight’s game against Oakridge is the most important game of the season! And now thanks to this little bastard here, we’ll probably lose without him!! Not to mention the fact that…

Michelle

IT’S JUST A GAME!!

Mike

IT’S Not JUST A GAME!!!

Julie

Michael calm down!! There’s no need to yell at her for what he did!

Mike

You stay out of this! I will never forgive him for this!! I have always been there for him, if things were that bad why didn’t he come to ME for help?? I have done nothing but make excuses for him lately and I’m sick of it!! Julie let’s go I have to get the coach and see if there is a way around this.

Julie

I’m sorry Michelle I’ll talk to him.

Julie

(Lights come up on Julie)

I felt so sorry for Rick. His parents say nothing now but “If we only knew, If we only understood” If this ,or If that. But nothing in the world can bring him back now. Mike….he’s torn up with guilt hating himself saying that it is his fault why Rick is gone. Michelle is seeing a psychiatrist now because she is emotionally unstable and was just recently put on medication to calm her down. She blames herself fully for Rick killing himself. She hates herself for leaving him and will never forgive herself for hurting him. But personally, I feel that if his parents for just one time in his life would treat him like a son and tell him “I love you” or god forbid give him a hug and make him feel wanted maybe he would still be here today.

(Michelle remains helping Rick get back into the bed. She gets up to leave)

Michelle

Goodbye Rick (Realizing that he cannot hear her)

(Blackout)

Scene 6

(After school the next day Michelle and Julie are walking outside by the school Julie is trying to console Michelle)

Julie

Michelle there’s nothing that you can do about it. All you can do is tell him how you feel and ask him to stop.

Michelle

Don’t you think that I have tried that? He won’t listen to me no matter what I say. He wasn’t conscious at all this morning and I am really getting worried.(Rick enter’s from offstage left as if in a hurry) Rick!! Honey are you alright?? Are you feeling better?? (Mike is entering pre-occupied from stage right)

Rick

Leave me alone!!(Shrugs them off and rushes by)

Julie

Mike he looks horrible go and talk with him.

Mike

To hell with him!

Julie

Michael Damn it. He is your best friend stop this childishness and go talk with him right now!!

Mike

Alright I’ll talk to him!! (Girls exit with Mike)(Curtain opens and we see Rick sitting on a park bench with flask in hand)

Mike

Rick whats happening to you? (No response) Rick? Rick I’m talking to you!!

Rick

Did I ask?

Mike

What the hell is the matter with you?(Grabs Rick’s flask) Can’t you see that this is going to kill you?

Rick

(Furious) When I want your opinion I’ll ask for it!! Don’t you dare pretend to be my friend after what you said to me this morning. Michelle told me everything so you can just hand that back and go and waste your breathe someplace else.

Mike

What so you can drink yourself to death the hell I will!!

Rick

You have no idea what I am going through alright…You just walk one mile in my shoes then maybe….

Mike

I have Rick, Its called responsibility and maybe if you’d stop feeling so gad damn sorry for yourself maybe you’d see that life isn’t so bad. (Michelle enters as Mike holds up the flask) This is not the answer!! Why won’t you let us help you!!

MIKE

Rick!!

Michelle

Mike stop it!

Mike

To hell with you drink yourself to death for all I care. I’m outta here.(Storms off)

Michelle

Mike come back you don’t have to leave (Tries to stop him)

Mike

Whatever …Have fun

Michelle

I can’t take this anymore Rick! Why do you have to hate yourself to the point that you won’t let ….(Rick cuts her off)

Rick

Don’t start I don’t need this. Not from you!!

Michelle

Why are you doing this to yourself?? Why won’t you let me help? Rick Jameson I love you doesn’t that mean anything to you? (No response from Rick as he turns)

Michelle

Fine!! If you don’t want me in your life then I certainly don’t want you in mine!! Take your ring back…Take it!! I don’t know what it is going to take for you to stop feeling so damn sorry for yourself but at this point I don’t care anymore. And don’t even bother calling me because I have nothing to say to you EVER!!

Scene 7

(Rick does this monologue down stage center as characters are mentioned they appear down stage right and left frozen)

Rick

You know I often tell myself that when something bad happens that it’s one of gods little ways to test our faith. For I have always been taught that when the unfortunate does happen that he would always walk with us no matter how bad things may get.Well I could contradict that, What are the chances of pissing off EVERY single person you come across on a daily basis? I mean I swear that I must have a special talent for this. (Parents freeze) I mean you saw my father, he makes himself out to be some Yale graduate when according to my mother he barely graduated high school. I love my mother but not once when my father got upset did she ever stand up for me. Sometimes I wondered f she ever cared at all. (Parents frozen in light are replaced by Mike and Juli) Mike…we were best friends for along time. But things always had to be his way. I had enough people telling me what to do than to add another so as you can imagine we started to drift apart as friends. Where as Julie is a kind hearted soul whom with whom I wish I got to be closer to. The only reason’s why we were really friends was through Mike. I cannot see anything but jealousy when I see them both because I would give anything to have loving parent’s like they had. To have parent’s who love and encourage me wait I know what your thinking..Michelle right? Michelle is an angel with whom I love very much. She doesn’t love me she pities me, I can see it in her eyes. She is the kindest soul that I have ever known and therefore do not deserve her. Father can’t you hear me? Where are you? Have I done so wrong that I have angered you as well? Well if I upset everyone around here this much and cause them to be that miserable I understand what must be done.

(Blackout)

Scene 8

Ms. J

Honey do you know what has been bothering Rick? He seemed a little upset when he came in this afternoon. Besides he’s locked himself in his room for some reason.

Mr. J

He’ll get over it. (Not concerned)

Ms. J

By the way honey I thought your bottom drawer was always locked.

Mr. J

It always is locked why?? (Starting to show interest)

Ms. J

Because I just came from our room and it was open……

Mr. J

My God!! Rick !!

MS. J

Honey what’s wrong?? Honey what’s happening?

(After Ms. J runs offstage you hear Mr. J scream then a gunshot ring out)

I, sit down to write this essay, there are several

questions that continue to run through my mind. Crossing the threshold of a

protective educational environment, to an independent level I wonder, what do I

hope to get out of continuing my education? As a prospective educator, what do

I hope to provide my students with? And last, what paths do I need to follow to

fulfill my destiny.

Like many of my peers and college students, I view the excess education

in college as a way to “broaden my horizons” and a way to help me obtain a job

that will provide sufficient pay. Yet aside from that popular view, I have set

many goals for myself that will allow me to receive the full benefits of my college

education. My first, and most important educational goal is to receive a degree.

As a person who thrives on educational achievement, I cannot forecast attending

a university for 4 to 5 years and not be able to become a specialist in my desired

field of education. In addition to caring so much about my grades, I have

already set in myself to maintain above a .0 grade point average while in

college. Last, I hope to gain a great knowledge of the teaching profession, so

that I will be able to administer my skills to students.

There are countless reasons why I chose to become an educator. As a

student in the public school system, I have witnessed teachers belittle their

students, get into legal troubles, and not have a high standard of a character.

That is the reason, why my number one career objective is to be a moral leader

and to show students a model citizen as well as a compassionate educator. In

addition to being a role model, I hope to be able to teach students lessons on life

and how to appreciate their education by applying fun and interesting tactics

that will encourage them to be excited about school.

Mending wall

One way you can read Mending Wall by Robert Frost is that it is about a man who rebuilds the wall seperating his property from his neighbour’s. This man, this persona created by Gray doesn’t seem to believe there is a use for the wall as “he [the neighbour] is all pine and I [the persona] am apple orchard” but his neighbour believes that “good fences make good neighbours”. The persona tries to change his neighbour’s opinion by trying to “put a notion in his head” but his neighbour seems to just ignore him. So the persona gets annoyed and thinks of him as an “old-stone savage”. This is a very simple situation which we can all relate to. But, if we read deeper into the poem we may find the meanings that Robert Frost wanted us to see. Firstly, as we know that this persona is against the building of walls where not necessary we find that it is this persona that initiates the re-building of the wall “I let my neighbour know beyond the hill”. This gives the reader something to think about it puts questions in the reader’s mind as to why he would initiate this if he doesn’t think it’s necessary. One reason may be that this persona enjoys the company of his neighbour but he gets frustrated with him. Maybe this persona is a lonely person and any company is good company they “meet to walk the line”. Maybe through mending the wall between them they are mending their friendship. These are all viable options and as we read further into the poem we may understand to a greater extent why he does this. When the two start building the wall the reader may notice that words such as “we” and “our” are used giving the feeling of cooperation and companionship. The persona once calls this task an “outdoor game” which connotes feelings of enjoyment, cooperation, competition. The fact that they walk “the line” “one on a side” gives a visual image in the readers mind and may remind them of a tennis game. I must emphasize that what is being told in the poem is from the persona’s point of view not directly Frost’s so the reader must beware and realise that it is possible that the persona is wrong in some of his comments. “There where it is we do not need the wall” this comment being straight to the point makes the reader feel as if the persona is denying the fact that it is the wall that brings the two men together to cooperate with one another and to converse with one another (to a certain extent). The line directly after this comment segregates the two from one another by contrasting the type of people they are with each other. “he is all pine and I am all apple orchard” the fact that this statement comes directly after the comment on the uselessness of the wall suggests that it is these kind of attitudes that puts a barrier between people thus segregating them from one another. Personification of the persona’s apple trees is used to explain to the reader just how much this persona undermines his neighbour. “my apple trees will never get across, and eat the cones under his pines”. Even though this comment is light-hearted and almost humorous it gives the reader the impression that the persona thinks of himself as a more intelligent person than his neighbour thus feeling that he needs to explain why the wall is unnecessary.

Spartan Economy

Explain the main features of the Spartan Economy. [5 Marks]

In Sparta, the economy meant two things the system of wealth creation and the state of the countrys prosperity. The economy has four essential features, natural resources, economic objectives (military state), distribution of land and the roles of Perioikoi and Helots. These features are inter-related and work together in order to achieve the economic objective, which was to maintain a military dominance. This priority of maintaining a military state, and the ineffectiveness of some of these structures eventually led to the decline of the Spartan economy.

The geography of Sparta enabled provision of sufficient resources to the Spartans. The lands of Laconia and Messene, which were captured by Spartans (and the Laconians and Messenians enslaved/subjugated) became a good food source for Sparta.

These two regions had good agricultural land which provided crops in abundance. These crops included barley, wheat, grapes and figs. Apart from the agricultural products, they also provided meat, as they grazed sheep, goats and pigs, which also supplied products such as milk, skins, wool, hair, fat, cheese etc. Iron, needed for weapons and armours was found in the Spartan territory itself, although they did have to import copper and tin to make bronze, which may have been for manufacturing utensils, statues, etc. Thus, it could be concluded that Sparta was a self sufficient area enclosed by natural barriers which protected rather than isolated it.

In Sparta, everything served a military purpose, everything subordinated to the art of war. The sole aim was to create invincible warriors and military dominance was maintained. Therefore, the economy was designed to ensure that hoplite classes ( heavily armed foot soldiers or infantrymen) of Spartiates and Perioikoi (dwellers around, sometimes made to fight in war for Sparta) were rich enough to maintain a high level of professional training and equipment. Each Spartiate, therefore had to have a minimum income to pay for his mess dues and the state had to have income to pay for armour and equipment. This was achieved through the exploitation of Helots who produced foodstuff that paid the mess dues, and was used to trade with Perioikoi that provided the armour and manufactured the goods needed by the Spartans. Thus everything was provided by the Helots, and the Perioikoi, thus making the Spartan economy depend on this supply, in order to maintain the military ! training needed.

In order to concentrate on military activities, citizens had to be free from the responsibility of providing for himself and his family. Therefore, these men owned a plot of land and were expected to make contributions to the mess from the produce of their land. All land controlled by Spartans was divided into allotments each Spartiate held a portion of the land (the kleros), which were passed from father to son, and could not be sold. The community also owned common land which could be sold and divided, which led to inequalities in wealth, and made communism superficial. This is the one feature of the Spartan economy, which proved ineffective as time went by, and contributed ultimately, to its decline.

Again, as the Spartiates had military priorities, they could not cultivate the land themselves, but the Helots did. The Helots, were the local inhabitants of Laconia and Messene owned by the Spartan state. They were required to work the land for their Spartan masters in total subjection. In other words they were state - owned serfs with no political and legal rights. Of the produce, the owner was entitled to 105 bushels of corn for himself, and twelve bushels for his wife, along with some wine and fruit. All that remained, the Helots could retain for themselves, in return, providing aid and servants to Spartiates in war.

The Spartiates needed this produce for two things to maintain the household, and to make a contribution to the mess, the syssition. The nature of contribution included each Spartiate contributing barley meal, wine, cheese, and figs and sums of money for fish or meat. Thus there was a certain interdependency between the Helots and the Spartiates, discipline necessitated the existence of Helots and existence of Helots necessitated discipline. Therefore, the Helots by doing their share of the work, enabled the Spartiates to maintain the equality in and contributions made to the Syssition, by which the Spartan economy functioned properly.

The Perioikoi or dwellers around were people living in towns and villages in Laconia and Messenia. They were free to live their lives as they wished although they were under the Spartan control. They took no part in Spartan government and were expected to fight for Sparta when a military emergency arose. They were also responsible for mining, manufacturing and commerce. All the minerals and marine resources of Laconia and Messene were in the hands of the Perioikoi. They procured metals and manufactured weapons. According to Pliny and Herodotus, they made shoes, purple garments and objects of wool and linen. Gytheum was the main centre for delivery of imports and exports and this was controlled by the Perioikoi. As a result of the fact that currency of exchange was iron bas, the Spartans had no means of purchasing foreign goods so exchange was limited to essential items such as copper and tin to make bronze. Wool and flax tiles were also exported, pottery and bro! nze work exported to other Greek states. They made or imported chariots. They also shared in land division. According to Plutarch, Lycurgus distributed 0,000 allotments to individuals. Most Laconian craftsmen were also Perioikoi.

Evidence of the Perioikoi came in the form of archaeological artefacts. Examples include bronze figurines of Hermes, engraved gems, limestone funerary relief, marble - hero relief, bronze figurine of bull, all found in Perioikic states. Therefore, the Perioikoi played a vital role in the economy, as they provided hoplites, procured metals, manufactured weapons, and manufactured clothing and other goods, all the essential ingredients of a military dominant state. Profits from trade and activities also went to Perioikic towns such as Gytheum.

The economy of Sparta began to crumble in the 5th Century. There are a number of reasons for this. The numbers of full citizens started declining rapidly. This occurred due to several factors they died in the invasions against the Persians, they did in the earthquake of 468 BC, death due to revolts among Helots, and due t the fact that the relationships between Perioikoi and Spartiates declined, which was critical to the economy. Other reasons for the decline of the economy include, heavy and expensive involvement in war, expensive involvement in chariot racing, through combined effect of inheritance limit to children and dynastic marriage, the land holdings went in the hands of few. The hatred of the Spartan class grew, few enjoyed benefits of land and the result was, disaster for Sparta.

Therefore, the sole aim of the economy was to maintain and efficiently run a military dominant state. Several factors such as the extreme interdependency between the groups such as Spartiates dependence on the Helots and the Perioikoi and other factors contributed and eventually led to the decline of the Military Dominant Spartan Economy.

The anticipation of a comedy genius was too much for the biggest fan of the situation comedy, ‘The Common Room’. As Ian Rogers, better known as Gary Daniels made his way through the front door and sat down on the large leather couch, his unmistakable smile imprinted on his face, this fan could not contain his excitement, ‘I don’t believe this its Gary, the Muhammad Ali of the Common Room’. His reply “naturally” was subtle and perhaps already illustrated a similarity in comparison with a controlling character he plays so vibrantly. Indeed he has been disparaged by one critic as being the most manipulative and self- orientated pupil ever. This description although profound is certainly accurate.

Upon opening the conversation, he gestures to shake my hand, and being the ‘big fan’ I do not decline yet, in attempting to he swiftly moves his palm away leaving me looking rather foolish. Feeling rather shamefaced my first question is deliberately insightful questioning his physical capabilities in comparison with other cast members. Unfortunately, Ian seems vaguely bemused by it. “Yeah definitely me, I grew up in Brixton, London and to be honest it wasn’t a royal palace, if you know what I mean, although my house sometimes had a policeman outside so technically I did have a tad of royalty”. I construed this as a joke but as I had already been the focus of amusement, I declined to laugh. “No seriously, you had to fight everyday, not actually punch someone but you know mentally. I think that has helped me”.

Ian’s childhood evoked an image of a departed age of innocence although as a child he was encouraged to express his individuality. Unfortunately, little opportunities arose. Nevertheless his immediate affinity with drama inspired a truly great English comic to be unleashed, an experience he reminisces about with considerable gratification, “I really wasn’t too clever at school, I only got four GCE’s and I think two of those were moderated by examiners who pitied me. However I genuinely enjoyed Drama, it was a way of expressing myself”. Ian vividly remembers his first acting role of significance with great amusement, “I was Macbeth. It was a hard transforming my individuality into a Shakespearian character, although I think my performance went particularly well. However, there was one insignificant drawback. A lad, who was endeavouring to challenge me for the main acting role, regrettably received a smash across his head in a battle scene and he was rushed to hospital. That rather dampened the mood of the play, although I did strike him quite hard, not that I have shown remorse. It is a dog eat dog world out there”. That reply was typically Gary, a manipulative, egotistical control freak, who will do anything to prevail. Nevertheless, his character is refreshingly unique and terribly entertaining, ‘If a problem arises extinguish it, not literally though cos’ that will make the situation bit soggy’. Examples such as this truly demonstrate Gary’s individuality and perhaps differentiate him from other characters.

Ian will forever be remembered as the only ever ‘Part time Christian’. This scene provoked a large discussion concerning the state of religious education in schools across England. However, Ian believes it was a blessing in disguise and ultimately assisted his promising career in comedy, “At first I couldn’t really believe the passage, I mean it was preposterous and when I first tackled it I was greeted by a chorus of laughter, including my own. It was ultimately ludicrous but it was comical. The last line was absolutely dreadful to perform mainly because everyone else was in mass hysteria”.

Ian attended ‘The Brixton School of Drama’ at the age of sixteen; having successfully negotiated auditions the previous month. An event, which he found particularly nerve-wracking as he considered it his only passage to notoriety. “I remember it well, it was the proverbial ‘crap your pants’ day. Although, having overcome my uncertainties I relaxed and in fact performed fluently. I was astonished a couple of long weeks later after I received a letter notifying my selection for a further audition. I was so proud with my accomplishment”. Ian starred in many minor productions and then unexpectedly he received a call from the producer of a situation comedy called ‘The Common Room’. “Obviously they were awestruck at my acting capabilities and so chose me”, he declares conceitedly concerning his selection.

The general perception from his role as Gary in the Common Room is that Ian is quite a preposterous and exaggerative person. Lines such as ‘This is a man’s game, not some nancy boy, friendly etiquette, ooohhh I’ll wipe your bum afterwards croquet match’, truly differentiate him from any other characters and due to this Ian has become quite the proverbial ‘household name’ in Brixton. “Whenever I visit Brixo, as I call it, I’m always in a state of constant panic, in case I get mobbed. I remember once, I was walking down the High Street when three women chased me, screaming, and no they were not particularly elegant”.

The preposterous assumption in comparing an actor and his/her character is becoming evermore prevalent in today’s society. The sweeping generalisation that accompanies Ian is the subject of my next question, with which Ian has always been deeply associated. “I knew you would ask that, I am definitely different in comparison with Gary. Obviously, there is a little of his egotistical viewpoints within me but I am definitely not a patronising person. In fact, his patronising approach is purely because Gary feels it is necessary to assert a manipulative influence over various characters. I, on the contrary, recognise my own inadequacies, and therefore I think we are entirely different”.Gary’s swagger is construed by many, as an indication of confidence but ultimately his personality epitomizes someone who is insecure and this reflected by his commandment of language, ‘I am the Muhammad Ali of this shithole although it’s not hard....’ In a way, it is difficult to comprehend Gary. His constant arrogance and self- orientation, questions how he maintains such a close friendship with the five characters. Ian labels Gary as an ‘oxymoron’. “He is a friendly villain,” he states. Many people, myself included see Gary as harmless but ultimately his arrogance conveys an egotistical edge, which if construed wrongly can result in him being characterized as a conceited bully. Ian goes on to elaborate upon what he believes Gary’s most obnoxious attribute is, “It is definitely his inability to listen, to consider others. He gets involved in unnecessary situations and therefore creates an inescapable hole, so to speak.” Gary’s insistence on being correct has much to do with his reputation and therefore he perceives a loss in an argument as a blow to his reputation. It is therefore paramount that he is always correct.

Ian’s newfound celebrity eminence is not only a testament to his self- belief but also to his genuine talent for acting. A loyal fan base is amassing and his impressive performances in ‘The Common Room’ have seen him receive a wide diversity of filming opportunities, one of which he has accepted. “It is called The Mismatch” he chuckles. “It regards an incessantly ridiculed outcast, the applauded Ian Roger’s, who works out to fight a tormenting pupil, Chris Klein. It is a combination of Gladiator and Terminator with a helping of comedy except far better”. Even though Ian is not acclaimed stateside, he maintains that he enjoys the anonymity, “I am able to leave my hotel or house not having to be completely conscious about others, in case I get lynched, although sometimes I wander why people are so obsessed by my acting, it is not as if I have received an Oscar”.

Ian Roger’s complicated viewpoint concerning his own success is somewhat eccentric and totally contrary to the egotistical character that he plays. Sometimes he embraces his accomplished performances by throwing celebratory parties although on other occasions he duly discounts his achievements. Although, Hollywood is an existing project it seems Ian is completely focused on producing a second series of the illustrious ‘Common Room’. “Yeah I definitely would like to produce a second series. It is an astounding concept and I copiously enjoyed working on such a critically acclaimed comedy”. Ian’s enthusiasm of continuing the situation comedy can only be to the detriment of other comical attempts. The slick productions in conjunction with an exceptional cast can only again, serve as a demonstration displaying the natural ability of actor Ian Rogers a.k.a. Gary Daniels.

Critical Thinking is convergent or judgmental thinking, where the mind discovers a common attribute, expressed as a word or phrase, which is shared by more than one idea or concept in the population of ideas being considered. These emerging attributes describe the glue that connects the associated ideas. Put another way, the associated ideas are judged to belong to a particular class or category, described by a new idea representing a shared attribute.

Thoreau In and On the Catskills

In Elevating Ourselves, Henry David Thoreau’s journals from his trips up such mountains as Mount Greylock or Saddleback, the Katahdin, Mount Washington and the Catskills are examined and interpreted. When Thoreau lodged in the home of a saw-miller in the Catskills, his profound and interesting writing took place. It was here that he started to refer to things in a more serene and sophisticated manner. While the majority of his writings are peaceful and intelligent, of what we’ve read, I believe this to be a very pivotal point in which his writings came in a much more poet manor than probably intended.

When Thoreau settled to live on the Catskills, he discusses, “the auroral atmosphere” of the mountains around him and how he likens the feeling to Mount Olympus (Huber 5). It is a comparison that takes me by surprise. It is not very often an American writer refers to a place like Greece when describing how it feels in a much more tactless place that is hundreds of miles away. Not to insult the America of Thoreau’s time, but I think it is certainly difficult to know what kind of majesty that he experienced back then which, today, might be all but vanished from the places he visited. In my hike up the Tower Trail, I looked across the hills and valleys only to signs of industry beyond, and I couldn’t help but wonder just how much more breath taking it must have been when it was seen by the first settlers of America. The hardest thing to interpret is whether or not the feeling was accurately described concerning Mount Olympus, because I have not have the pleasure of being there to realistically compare it to the feeling I had during my Tower Trail hike. Also, the fact that he’d choose Mount Olypmus of all the mountains in the world he could refer too intrigues me greatly. Was he comparing himself to an entity of a god-like stature? Or was he simply saying that from up there one becomes so detached from humanity that it’s easy to think outside the traditional realm of the human mind? I would hope and assume the latter of the two.

When Thoreau is invited to tour Europe with Isaac Hecker on foot, he declines and reflects on the invitation in his journal. “…I cannot so decidedly postpone exploring the Farther Indies, which are to be reached you know by other routs and other methods of travel…” (Huber 7). He thinks it worthless and in a way pointless to travel in a place that has been and is still being traveled on. Thoreau thinks that getting away from civilization and living off the land and only with yourself to pull you through the situations is how one really can reflect on one’s self and his problems. I’m not sure if I completely agree with Thoreau here. I think it is still a trying experience to go to a land that one is not very familiar and try and blaze a path in a different since. I know many people that have backpacked around Europe that say it is an experience unlike anything else that they’ve been through, and those same two guys were very experienced hikers. I think the two activities produce very different emotions and results. While I don’t disagree with what Thoreau is saying, “…to live along the road…” is comparable to giving one’s self a safety net, I do disagree with his discussion not to go.

Of these two excerpts, I see that Thoreau has discovered just how liberating nature can be. I don’t necessarily find either one more intriguing than the other, in the sense that I don’t know enough about either instance to know what Thoreau was really thinking. But I do know that neither of these would be evident to me at all if it weren’t for Thoreau’s “Lewis and Clark” type of thinking. He simply could not let things go unnoticed or discovered. And as I read more about him and his travels, the more I wish our country still had undiscovered areas that I myself might be able to go seek out and discover. Thoreau believed this the best way to learn. He thought every college should be located at the foot of a mountain. As he wrote during his hike up Mount Greylock, “It would be no small advantage if every college were thus located at the base of a mountain…” (Huber 1). Had someone said that to me less than a year ago, I might not have thought anything of it, but being here at Quinnipiac has caused me to appreciate the uniqueness of our location and the infinite advantages and opportunities it awards me as well as every other student on the campus. Whether or not one takes advantage of it is up to the individual. I also appreciate that Thoreau doesn’t think it necessary to be an experienced hiker or camper. He thinks everyone can and should enjoy nature. It should not be limited to only those who have been schooled or educated in the matters of the outdoors. I couldn’t agree with him more.

I think what Thoreau is really trying to say through all of his journal writings is that no one should be afraid of the unknown. No one person should allow a fear of something keep them from doing what they enjoy. Discovery can only occur when the concern of what might go wrong so ignored so the individual can move beyond and take that leap of faith. Had Lewis and Clark allowed the fear of what might become of them in the wilderness dictate whether or not they would make the journey across America, there would be a whole lot less America to be proud of right now. Thoreau sees nature as the discovery and test of what any one person is capable of doing. I completely agree with him. “I never came upon any of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking.” Thoreau and Einstein might have not been compared that often before but I see there methods as one in the same.

View of the Church on Euthanasia

The Roman Catholic Church is the single largest organization to fund against euthanasia. It invests more money in its fight against euthanasia than all the combined resources of “right-to-die” societies around the world. The Church teaches the commandment Thou Shalt Not Kill. Therefore, euthanasia is morally unacceptable. This raises the moral question do we have the right to kill?

Pope John Paul II defines euthanasia as an action or omission which by itself and by intention causes death in order that all suffering in this way be eliminated. The Church absolutely prohibits suicide of any kind. Catholic theologians have confirmed that the prohibition, whilst being the Vatican’s current position, is not an inviolable one. Just because euthanasia is popular does not mean it is morally right. The Church’s tactics to support their statement include disinformation and threats of excommunication.

Christian scripture has always stated that nobody has the right to kill. The Book of Genesis states that “God created humankind in his image” (Genesis 17). Human life is sacred and given an strong character which reflects the inviolability of the Creator. Every human life, from the point of conception to death, is sacred because the person has been willed for his own sake in the image and likeness of God. “Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him,” states the Apostle John (1 Jn 15).

The Church says that the answer for terminally ill patients is in palliative care. The problem is that fifty percent of patients with terminal illnesses do not have access to palliative care. The Church argues that if palliative care were better, patients would not be in pain. If there was no pain, patients would not request euthanasia.

Not all churches and organizations are strictly against euthanasia like the Catholic Church. The Episcopalian Unitarian, Methodist, Presbyterian, Hindu, Skh Dharma and Quaker religions are amongst the most liberal. They oppose the practice, but allow at least individual decision making in the cases of active euthanasia. They leave the decision to individual conscience. Very few faiths prohibit passive euthanasia. The most common religions that tend to oppose it are conservative Evangelicals, Islam and the Mormon Church.

Self-deliverance, also known as suicide, is also accepted by many faiths. The Jaina ethic of self-deliverance is done through fasting. In 17, the Dutch Reformed Church in the Netherlands published a pamphlet in which euthanasia was conditionally accepted as a humane way of dying.

Pope John Paul II states in Evangelium Vitae that

“Abortion and euthanasia are thus crimes which no human law can claim to legitimize. There is no obligation in conscience to obey such laws; instead there is a grave and clear obligation to oppose them by conscientious objection. In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to ‘take part in a propaganda campaign in favor of such a law, or vote for it.’” (65).

Christian beliefs concerning suicide were well documents by Thomas Aquinas around 15-174. He condemned suicide because it violates the natural desire to live, it harms other people and because life is a gift from God and it must only be taken by God.

Michel de Montaigne, a European writer who lived from 15-15, wrote five essays that touched on the subject of suicide. He argued that suicide should be considered a matter of personal choice, and that it is a rational option under certain circumstances.

The Unitarian-Universalist Association is a liberal group located in the U.S. They issued a statement in 188 to support euthanasia and assisted suicide by choice only if there are proper precautions to avoid abuse. what tables, charts or graphs you will be using with the data

Strand Collect Process and Represent Data Different types of calculation and charts score different marks. However, you do not score any marks for something that is not mentioned in either your plan or your conclusion. If you didnt plan to do something, that is OK, but you should explain in your conclu why you changed your mind

Strand Interpret and Discuss Results Once you have finished your courework, you need to say what you think your project showed and maybe explain why you think it showed it. If you do not do this you score ZERO in this strand.

Conditional probabilities

Lets look again at the previous example.

The bag contains 4 red beads and 5 green beads.

P (first bead is red) =

P (first bead is green) =

P (second bead is red, given that the first bead was red) =

P (second bead is green, given that the first bead was red) =

If the first bead is green, then there are 4 red and 4 green beads left in the bag.

P (second bead is red, given that the first bead was green) =

P (second bead is green, given that the first bead was green) =

These are known as conditional probabilities and are best represented on a tree diagram.

Remember

The sum of the probabilities for any set of branches should always be 1.

From the tree diagram we can see that

P (both beads are red) =

P (one bead of each colour) =

P (both beads are green) =

Easy? Try the following question yourself.

The probability that Alex arrives home on time is 0.7.

If he does arrive home on time, the probability that his dinner is burnt is 0.1.

If he doesnt arrive home on time, the probability that his dinneris burnt is 0.8.

Question 1

What is the probability that Alex arrives home on time and his dinner is not burnt?

The Answer

The probability that Alex arrives home on time and his dinner is not burnt is

0.7 x 0. = 0.6

Question

What is the probability that Alexs dinner is burnt?

William¡¦s play, ¡§A Street Car Named Desire¡¨, revealing the reality versus the illusion; the present versus the past, is expressively representing the desire of body versus it of the soul. Tennessee Williams, further, uses music in a symbolic way ¡V ¡§Blue Piano¡¨, the expression of non-romantic reality of the life of the people on earth, and which is just the life that Stanley and Stella lead. On the other hand, Polka, the waltz music, romantics associated with the past, was the one played in the night when Blanche, the heroine, had danced with her husband whom and then committed suicide. The polka keeps in her mind, becoming a memento or a symbol of her miserable experience with her husband. Every time she thinks of her young husband, the music of the polka will rise up (P.1, P84, P6, P11, P11).

Moreover, Light, in this play, is the symbol of reality, and dark; the illusion. This is one of the reasons why Blanche is fear of the light, for she only accepts the illusion she believes in. Standing under light would make her be seen very clearly by others, and they will find that she is no longer young already. This fact reminds her to think of death. Further, the Mexican street vender selling flowers (P11) was the symbol of death, reminding Blanche of the funerals in Belle Reve.

All in all, desire, the main focus emphasized in this play, is the motif in Stan, Blanche and Stella¡¦s button of hearts. ¡§Desire¡¨ is the winner of the play; everyone is driven by this evil sense. People are born to have desires. And everyone might be the moth, chasing for the unknown desire, driven by the unknown desire, and get jeopardized.

Letters from Atlantis by Robert Silverberg fits into the science-fiction genre category for many reasons. It involves time travel from the future to the past. It also engages “aliens from another domain” that make the book even more scientifically fictitious towards the conclusion of the novel. Letters from Atlantis is a science-fiction novel because it contains “made-up nonsense” words used in almost all other science-fiction stories. However, it is more than just a usual 150-page science-fiction book. The setting, style, and author are important literary elements that make this book extremely spectacular, powerful, and distinctive from other books.

Letters from Atlantis is first set in the late 1st Century. Scientists in the future develop a type of time travel in which the traveler’s consciousness is transferred into the mind of someone actually living in the past- a useful way to observe history first hand. After Roy, the main character of the novel, is sent through this “Time Machine”, he ends up in the ancient land of Atlantis The Lost Empire, around the year 18, 86 B.C., about 0, 000 years before the late 1st Century. Atlantis is speculated to be located in present- day Brittany or Normandy, France. His lover, Lora, was sent into the mind of a provincial governor in present day Poland or Prussia around the same time Roy was sent.

The author, Robert Silverberg, keeps readers interested in the story because of the very figurative descriptions and language of events, characters, and places. He also leaves many cliffhangers, instilling the desire to keep reading. These cliffhangers leave pictures in the readers’ minds that help predict what is to happen next, and about what just happened while reading. For example, when Roy was sending his first letter to Lora, the main aspect to wonder about was how the letter would get to Lora, and if there would be any conflict with the letter being sent between Prince Ram (prince in which Roy is inside of) and other Athilantan (native inhabitants of Atlantis) occupants. A picture is then left at the end of the chapter holding a letter being sent off by Roy. Roy was worrying very much if the letter would reach Lora. The author’s style is unique because this novel is a plenty of journals and diaries from Roy about his thoughts and experiences written to his lover Lora. The title refers to Roys letters to Lora, written after putting the Princes mind to sleep and using his body. Many similes, metaphors, cliffhangers, hooks, and symbols were used throughout the novel. There are many symbols because throughout the work of fiction, Roy compares Atlantis to the modern-time he used to live. For example, the Athilantan calendar symbolizes the modern daytime when it reminds him he lived in it.

The author, Robert Silverberg, wrote Letters from Atlantis because he wanted to place and take readers’ minds approximately 0,000 years back into the age of Atlantis. Silverberg especially wrote this work to aspiring students interested in writing to show them how deep of an imagination everybody has within them. Silverberg mainly wrote this novel to show that if he can write a great book that can put and hang on to readers into a mythical and fantasized place, they could do it too, as long as they put their brain and heart to it. All of this requires hard work. Readers who read this will get ideas of how broad their mind really is and can be. Silverberg had to know many things before writing Letters From Atlantis. He had to research about how life was during the time of Atlantis. Nobody knows for sure how life was back then because Atlantis remains an enigmatic mystery. Silverberg still had to find out through science, history, and textbooks about how life was back then, the type of government (if any), how people acted, how people looked, and the style of communication people had. Silverberg nailed down most of the details of how life was said to be during the era of Atlantis, based on numerous historians and scientists. If a chance were given to talk to Robert Silverberg, an important question to ask him would be where he gets his ideas from and what his ideas are based upon. Nobody could have thought about the ideas he presented in Letters From Atlantis. A lot of the story makes readers continue reading. There is a lot of suspense Silverberg presents throughout the novel. Silverberg had very good details, descriptions, and figurative language. His plot also helped build up suspense. He left behind, at the end of each chapter, a “cliffhanger” that makes readers keep on reading. All of this helps in being “hooked” on to the book.

The three major elements, setting, style, and author, made Letters From Atlantis very powerful. They helped build on the plot and details that capture the reader. The settings created an “up-close-and-personal” feeling. The author taught important lessons to readers one- anybody can be what they want to be as long as they put their mind and heart to it, and two- the greatness of love. The whole story, Letters From Atlantis, was made because of letters written by Roy to be sent to his lover, Lora. Without his love towards her, the story would not be made. The author, Robert Silverberg, presented his style by writing letters and making the whole book a series of letters, instead of having dialogue, making Letters From Atlantis sole from all other books. That style is a very interesting way of story telling. The best element of the book was the setting because of the education learned about a historical landmark that not many people know much about, Atlantis. The best parts of the novel were when conversations occurred between Prince Ram and Roy after Roy confessed he is in the Princes mind. Roy confessed because he began to feel lonely and depressed, so he grew a little careless. The Prince soon became aware of Roys presence in his mind based on clues given earlier from Roy, like when Roy talked in Prince Ram’s mind while Prince Ram would be faking his sleep. Roy and Prince Ram would soon have hilarious conversations between each other because they both had no idea what they were saying to each other. Keep in mind that Prince Ram communicates in an ancient Athilantan language, whereas Roy speaks in English. Those were the best parts of the book. Letters From Atlantis was selected to read because of a recommendation from a friend. After reading about the story and author, this novel immediately sparked an interest that has now turned out to be very beneficial.
