"A Soldiers Home"

“Soldier’s Home” A Classic for Everyone
When I decided to take an introductory course in literature, I had no idea that I knew so little about the subject. Being a student with an interest in psychology, it seemed only natural that I would find the stories, “A Sorrowful Woman,” “Soldier’s Home,” and “Bartleby, the Scrivener” of particular interest. Each of these works contains the same deep meaning, although not readily apparent. All concern the psychology of self-isolation.
Although all three stories share a somewhat common theme, “A Sorrowful Woman” seemed to exhibit a more complex use of symbols. This requires a more experienced reader in order to grasp every hidden meaning. Since my experience studying good literature is currently limited, this lessened my reading enjoyment. I found Ernest Hemingway’s classic “Soldier’s Home” to be the most interesting. Not only did I find the story fascinating, but it also contained just the right combination of simple and complex use of symbolism to make it an excellent learning experience. Hemingway’s style, along with his integration of plot, characters, and setting, can easily be recognized and identified with by amateurs such as I. His combination of third person omniscience and objective point of views gives the novice reader necessary details while allowing them to read between the lines.
Hemingway’s style sets a tone of loneliness and isolation by using short, stark sentences such as, “He did not want to leave Germany. He did not want to come home. Still, he had come home. He sat on the front porch” (154). The author also creates an ironic twist when he uses a setting that typically provides a warm and protective environment, in direct contrast to Krebs’ feelings of isolation. Hemingway’s use of more obvious symbols helps the amateur reader to recognize and appreciate the more subtle qualities of good literature. For instance, when Krebs’ sister Helen calls him Hare, the reader instinctively feels that Krebs is hiding like a scared rabbit from the expectations and attentions of his family and society.
In addition to his unique style, Hemingway utilizes a chronologically arranged plot, which is easier for an amateur critic to follow. He begins his story with an exposition that gives the reader a slight insight to the protagonist’s religious background and hints at his upbringing. It also includes a brief explanation of Krebs’ experience in WWI. The plot then continues through the months following the young soldier’s return from the war, describing his internal struggle with his war experiences and his return to a society and family that cannot understand his self-isolation.
The reader is exposed to the rising action of the plot as he/she is introduced to the secondary characters of the story. Like Krebs, Hemingway gives the mother a round character that reveals some thoughts and emotions as she caters to her son, timidly trying to persuade him to get on with his life. She seems to be the only link to the real world around him and she acts as a messenger for Krebs’ father who never actually makes an appearance in the story. This clever portrayal of the father’s extremely flat character emphasizes the fact that, “His father was noncommittal” (15). Krebs’ younger sister, Helen, is another flat character whose purpose is to expose Krebs’ vulnerable side. The lonely soldier’s attempts at socializing add to his feeling of isolation as he constantly seeks out entertainment that is typically nonsocial. For instance, the narrator tells us that Krebs spends his time, “ . . . walk[ing] downtown to the library to get a book, eating lunch at home, reading on the front porch . . .” (15). In fact, the only activities Krebs likes that may subject him to the presence of others is to play pool.
Throughout the story Krebs’ mother tries to draw him out of his shell, which leads the reader to the turning point when she confronts him about getting on with his life. The climax occurs when Krebs is talking with his mother. She asks him if he loves her and he says no, “ I don’t love anybody” (157). The reader is left with a sense of heartbreak. This sense of sadness is followed by the falling action of the plot when Hemingway reveals Krebs’ decision to leave home. Finally, the reader is led to the conclusion (the denouement) with the realization that Krebs internal conflict has not ended.
During every aspect of the story, Hemingway keeps the reader involved emotionally with his expertly organized plot, subtle (yet recognizable) use of symbols, and his use of characters that any reader can identify with. Not only is “A Soldier’s Home” a pleasant reading experience, it also provides a bit of challenge to the less seasoned reader of literature. Hemingway’s unique use of all these elements creates a more enjoyable reading experience than does “A Sorrowful Woman”.

Effective Techniques for Time Management and Stress Reduction
Stress is capable of derailing the most focused person with its feelings of dread, anxiety, and loss of control. While it can have positive effects, stress gets its notoriety from its acute and sometimes chronic negative results. The negative effects can range from acute agitation to chronic anxiety and from short-term physiological disorders to long-term physiological health problems. To combat these problems, it is imperative to one’s health to reduce negative stress and its adverse consequences through various techniques. One of the most effective methods for stress reduction is a well-developed and disciplined time management routine.
Stress
Definition
From an encyclopedia article from Encarta stress is defined as, “an unpleasant state of emotional and physiological arousal that people experience in situations that they perceive as dangerous or threatening to their well-being.” (“Stress (psychology),” 00). More directly, “stress is a complex dynamic process of interaction between a person and his or her life. It is the way we react physically, mentally, and emotionally to the various conditions, changes, and demands of life” (“Stress Management,” 00). Stress itself can be divided into two separate types, positive stress and negative stress. While most stress is considered to be unhealthy and negative, there are some instances when stress can have positive effects. In addition, stress can be an acute and short-term problem or a chronic or long-term issue.
Positive Stress
Stress can provide positive mental benefits. For example, an individual can use stress as motivation for personal growth and development. Stress also can be used to enhance one’s performance. Increases in productivity or output may be induced by positively focused stress. In fact, “positive stress is actually essential and beneficial, and can be our strongest ally for leading stimulating healthy lives, filled with vitality and resilience” (“Stress Positive,” 00).
Negative Stress
Negative stress is best defined by its negative impacts to our psyche. It is the most dangerous type of stress because it can have severe consequences. Negative stress can be broken down into two categories, acute or immediate and chronic or long term. While the lifetime affects of stress are the subject of a number of scientific studies, one thing that many experts agree on is that “research has shown that stress is a contributing factor in a majority of disease cases” (“Stress”, 00). In fact, many cardiovascular experts believe that “emotional stress is a major trigger for angina. Incidents of acute stress have been associated with a higher risk for serious cardiac problems - heart rhythm abnormalities and heart attacks, and even death from such events in people with heart disease” (“Stress and Heart”, 00). As opposed to chronic stress, experts also agree that exposure to acute stress affects people differently; therefore, it is important to understand the difference between the two types of stress. In addition, it is widely thought that unchecked acute stress can lead to chronic stress.
Acute Stress. Stress is a naturally occurring psychological emotion that most people commonly encounter during the normal course of their lives. In fact, many people will encounter the more common type of stress referred to as
“Acute (immediate), which can be a one-time incident that usually comes and goes quickly. Its effect on us can last from minutes or hours to days or weeks. Examples of acute stress include narrowly avoiding an automobile crash, or a violent incident with someone. In acute stress, the body responds to a perceived threat. Your body releases chemicals that increase your heart rate and breathing and provide a burst of energy. This is known as the stress response or the fight-or-flight response (“Stress Management,” 00).
How we address and deal with these stress triggers, or stressors, will determine whether they will remain acute or be converted into less healthy long-term chronic stress.
Chronic Stress. While acute stress can cause finite bursts of short-term emotional discontent, it is the longer term or chronic stress that is the most threatening to one’s physiological health; therefore, it is important to understand chronic long-term stress.
Chronic stress “can be caused by a continuing string of stressful incidences or an ongoing situation. Examples of chronic stress include a difficult job environment, caring for someone with a chronic disease, or a state of loneliness. In chronic stress, the bodys response depends on the severity and duration of the stress and how you respond. The cardiovascular system, the nervous system, and the immune system may be affected. Chronic stress plays a role in many health problems, including coronary artery disease, diabetes and asthma (“Stress Management,” 00).
By understanding the possible side affects, it is imperative that those who suffer from chronic stress seek out professional help to identify its causes and ultimately control this type of unhealthy stress.
Causes of Stress
Stress is often related to environmental or physiological triggers. In order to combat stress it is important to understand its potential causes. As noted earlier, “both positive and negative events in ones life can be stressful. However, major life changes are the greatest contributors of stress for most people. They place the greatest demand on resources for coping” (“Stress Management,” 00). Microsoft’s health page describes the following items as stress factors
· A number of specific irritating events throughout a time period, such as a traffic jam on the way to an appointment, an argument with a customer or boss, a bad lunch and so on.
· General conditions in your life, such as poor physical health, lack of a support system, emotional problems, loneliness, depression, and unsatisfactory living and work situations.
· Life cycle transitions and developmental stages, such as getting married or decreased physical abilities. When other stress occurs within one of these, it increases the cumulative stress level.
· Conflicts with your belief system, such as placing a high value on family life but not having the family life you want (“Stress Managemnt,” 00).
Several other professionals describe causes of stress as stressors.
“Stressors can be physical or emotional, internally or externally generated. Stressors can be events, situations, people or demands the individual perceives to be the source of stress. The most common stressor is change, such as lost of a loved one; career change; illness or injury and lifestyle changes. Stressors also vary amongst people; children, teens and adults are all capable of experiencing stress yet there are some stressors that are specific to the age or type of person” (“Stress Management,” 00).
Once one understands potential stress causes and triggers, one can employ practices designed to avoid these stressors and thus, reduce the overall effects of acute or even chronic stress.
Stress Reduction Techniques
The best way to shed the negative effects of acute and chronic stress in one’s life is to avoid stressors altogether. To accomplish this, there are a number of techniques that one can utilize that will reduce or eliminate stress. In an article written for The Canadian Journal of Continuing Medical Education, David B. Posen, M.D. (15) stated, “there are many ways to relieve stress, from going for a walk to quitting your job” (p. 1). While quitting one’s job may not be practical since it could lead to other stressors, “the main emphasis in management of long term stress is on adjusting your working methods and your lifestyle. Formal relaxation techniques do have a part in this, but equally important are time management skills, a positive attitude, a healthy diet with sufficient exercise and adequate rest, and a pleasant environment” (“Techniques for Reducing,” 16). While there are a number of techniques for diet and exercise, it is time management that can produce some of the most dramatic results in one’s stress reduction. Adequate time management can limit or eliminate negative stressors and allow for healthy activities, such as relaxation.
Time Management
Definition
To understand effective techniques for time management as they relate to overall stress reduction, first, it is important to understand time management. Simply stated, “time management is a set of related practical skills that help you to use your time in the most effective and productive way possible. Time management helps you to reduce work stress by being more in control of your time and by being more productive. This ensures that you have time to relax outside work” (“Time Management,” 16). The next point that one must understand are the steps one can take to practice both short and long-term time management techniques for the purpose of stress reduction. This is important because “with good time management skills you are in control of your time and your life, of your stress and energy levels” (Time Management Skills,” 00).
Techniques
After understanding time management’s definition, one is now ready to incorporate short-term steps to manage and ultimately reduce stress induced by the lack of adequate time to complete necessary tasks. Time management techniques are intended to reduce the causes of acute and chronic stressors through changes in life practices. One article (“Time Management,” 16) noted these techniques for time management
· Assess the value of your time and how effectively you are using it
· Focus on your priorities so that you know which tasks should be done, which ones can be delegated, and which ones can be dropped
· Plan projects so that they are done properly with adequate resources
· Use the time you have more effectively
· Create more time
· Manage and avoid distractions
· Increase your productivity and personal effectiveness
While these techniques can be helpful in stress reduction, it is through long-term time management techniques that stress is ultimately controlled or eliminated.
Benefits
Just as long-term acute stress can lead to chronic stress, a lifetime practice of time management techniques can combat the effects of stress. One a web site, Mind Tools notes that consistently practicing effective time management techniques “helps to put things in perspective when you feel ‘drowned’ in work.” Practicing the techniques also helps by “ensuring that you are in control of where you are going and what you are doing.” Which in turn, “makes you highly productive, improving enjoyment in your current role, giving you more time to relax and enjoy life” (Mind Tools, p. 1). It is through time management and its impacts on negative acute and chronic stress that we can “relearn how to live our lives to their fullest potential; to have time to enjoy ourselves, our families and our jobs” (Rechtschaffen, 00, p. 1).
Conclusion
Whether positive or negative, acute or chronic, and with its many potential affects to one’s psychological and physiological health, it is important to understand stress, its causes, symptoms, and remedies. Like anything that affects one’s psychological or physiological well being, stress must be understood and limited. By utilizing techniques like time management, one can overcome stress and its negative effects and reduce the potential of acute stress becoming chronic stress.

A Look at Barthelme’s “Sentence”
A brief glance at Barthelme’s “Sentence” might lead one to the conclusion that the story is simple and pure non-sense; completely devoid of all meaning and value in every respect. With such a glance one might even go so far as to call it gibberish a total waste of the writer’s time and resources and then most definetely a waste of mine. However, a deeper and closer examination would without a doubt lead one to an entirely diffirent, more rewarding conclusion there are in fact (at least) two highly important “factors of sense” to be found in Barthelme’s “Sentence.” One concerns the deceptive nature of literature as such and the other, to put it as simply as possible, tackles a question of time. I will discuss both of these here however, for reasons soon to be known, my main emphasis is going to be on that second factor regarding time.
There is a strong deconstructive element in the “Sentence” and it’s deconstruction is primarily aimed, in a broad sense via literature, at language. Barthelme’s story has an important twist though in that it’s deconstructing does not take place solely on an aesthetic level or a theoretical one. In a sense it launches its attacks from both of these standpoints. If we were to break this argument up into smaller units we could say that on the aesthetic level attacker number one is the story itself. “Sentence” is essentially a work of art and as such dismantles itself to reveal what “makes it tick” so to speak and one might then define those shorter stories within the story as subsequent (smaller) attackers from the same army, for example the story about the married couple or the description of Robert Houdin’s Fantastic Orange Tree. This latter example becomes in fact a rather well accomplished flirt with the deception in Barthelme’s “Sentence” - being so completely shameless in it’s lying. On the other hand we have the theoretical side of the “Sentence” it’s strong awareness of reader-response criticism and it’s somewhat scientific or at least methodical approach to dissecting itself.
thus, considering everything carefully, in the sweet light of the
ceremonial axes, in the run-mad skimble-skamble of information
sickness, we must make a decision as to wether we should proceed,
or go back, in the latter case enjoying the pathos of eradication, in
the former case reading an erotic advertisment
Here we have a perfect example of the forementioned reader-response criticism awareness. In this the “Sentence” not only assumes a reader (which can of course be said of many other and much older literary works) but also assumes that this reader can be a somewhat “unstable” or perhaps fleeting phenomenon. This concluding segment of the story can be viewed as a fair example of the latter
and Ludwig falls through the Tugendhat House into the history
of man-made objects; a disappointment, to be sure, but it reminds
us that the sentence itself is a man-made object, not the one we
wanted of course, but still a construction of man, a structure to be
valued for its weakness, as opposed to the strength of stones
And here we have the bottom line; the “Sentence” or any sentence for that matter (and both literature and language as such along with them) is weak and nobody should try to define it in any other way. Language is a “man-made object” and is therefore subject to the same completely unavoidable human flaws as man himself. However, we are still supposed to treasure the sentence for what its worth, even though it does not posess “the strength of stones” so Barthelme’s story shouldn’t be considered as pessimistic. Language has value; just simply not the value man is normally inclined to grant it.
Turning then to the above mentioned question of time. Barthelme’s “Sentence” is in fact primarily concerned with time and furthermore one could say that it deals with this issue mostly on a philosophical level rather than a literary one. In this respect one could even go so far as to call the story’s literary value a nice but never the less unavoidable by-product. There are a number of allusions to time itself to be found in the “Sentence” some of whom are quite obvious but there are also a few (in a sense) hidden and more complex allusions.
Or a long sentence moving at a certain pace down the page aiming
for the bottom […] where it can rest, or stop for a moment to think
about the questions raised by its own (temporary) existance, which
ends when the page is turned, or the sentence falls out of the mind
that holds it (temporarily) in some kind of an embrace
It is clear that one understands this opening segment of the “Sentence” more fully when one has read the story through to its end although both “opening segment” and “end” don’t do justice to the story’s logic so to speak the “Sentence” in fact does not begin nor end anywhere. Furthermore it is not supposed to begin nor end, it is supposed to take place beyond time so to speak, since its main subject matter is time itself. What Barthelme attempts is a sort of neutralization of time, and thus tries to create some, although small and vulnerable, room to say what is in fact impossible to say about time. Regarding this, one can for example mention his use of brackets around the direct allusions to time, thereby giving these allusions a sort of “beside the point” feeling. I think this is absolutely necessary to receive the story’s full impact the reader must be fairly unaware of its hidden agenda so to speak. The “Sentence” points the reader to where the beast lies but never goes so near as to wake it up beacause then it would most certainly be ripped to pieces before the reader had even had a chance to figure out what was being pointed at.
In this respect Barthelme fails and of course can not but fail (the neutralization of time already presupposes its existance) but his “Sentence” is highly successful in other ways. It does say a certain “something” although nobody could ever explain in detail what that certain “something” is. It manages to raise questions concerning the nature of time - questions a reader might not have contemplated until reading Barthelme’s “Sentence” questions that may or may not lead one to conclude that time is in itself a cold and even brutal phenomenon. Time doesn’t fly. Time never flies. This conception of time, like language “is a man-made object” and furthermore it is perhaps a conception that man can not live without. It is perhaps absolutely essential for human beings to feel that they have some sort of control where time is concerned even though this control is for the most part fabricated by man himself. A fabrication needed to prevent “a condition so damaging to real-time social intercourse of any kind.” It is clear that this discussion of Barthelme’s “Sentence” has been drifting (somewhat aimlessly I’ll admit) from its original deconstructive reasoning to a more existential one. However, I think this shift in theoretical emphasis is a logical one. Realizing that language is essentially without meaning and that time is simply there and constant may be the quickest way to experience, first-hand, existential anxiety and despair.
Gertrude Stein is an ideal example of an author who values the weakness of language in this “Barthelmenian” sense. Her Tender Buttons are well aware of the flaws that inevitably taint all “man-made” objects and in this particular work she is also quite often concerned with questions of time. True, she doesn’t answer these questions, like Barthelme, on a somewhat theoretical basis but then again theory aims toward meaning - Tender Buttons on the other hand, and in a sense, denies its existance. A look at Stein

Barthelme’s “Sentence” and this latter example from Stein’s Tender Buttons may of course be considered as somewhat similar projects. In the second sentence of this latter example Stein “breaks the rules” in two important ways. Firstly, this said sentence is far from coherent and, perhaps more importantly, it also refuses to be concluded but goes on and on via endless “and’s” and is in that respect very similar to Barthelme’s story. Stein lacks Barthelme’s theoretical or scientific support (for reasons already known) and the “Sentence” is of course considerably longer but I think the basic thought is still the same. We can say then (for the purposes of this discussion) that Stein, with her Tender Buttons, provides the interior decorations for Barthelme’s Time Machine half a century before it was built.

Notes
This image shows the random executions of the Spanish citizenry resulted from the fighting in the Puerto del Sol area of Madrid (Also see the Goya painting Second of May). A national uprising in Spain followed, and scenes such as Goyas Third of May were repeated throughout the Spanish countryside, as the French commanders failed to quell the national mood, and instead made it more furious.
Goya had previously admired the practical freedoms the French enlightenment had promised. Most of the Spanish intellectuals of Goyas time were weary of the faltering efforts of Charles IV and Ferdinand to bring reform and improvement to Spain. However, the brutality of Napolean (through his brother Joseph & the military commanders instructed to minimize the fighting there) suspended whatever affection the Spanish liberals had for French freedoms.
For the length of the six-year occupation by the French, Goya lived almost entirely in Madrid. There is much speculation in art books about whether Goya personally witnessed events such as The Second of May, and The Third of May. It is evident that Goya owned property at La Quinta, where the massacres took place, and there is (though disputed by some historians) a story by one of Goyas gardeners, a man named Isidro, who told Antonio Trueba (recorded in his book Madrid por fuera) that Goya witnessed the shootings at Montana del Principe Pio via telescope (a telescope was inventoried as belonging to Goya after his death), and that Isidro accompanied Goya later that night to the place where the corpses were, at which time Goya made notes. This account is referenced in Xavier de Salas book GOYA, published 178 by Mayflower books.
...the Third of May, has become even more famous, haunting the covers of history books, appearing on postage stamps and postcards. It has been used to epitomize the art of Goya, as well as the spirit of Spanish revolutionary heroism. This violent yet moving image depicts the public execution of insurgents on May 1808, the day following the insurrection [see Goyas Second of May] In contrast to the vigour of the street battle, in which the Spaniards appear, momentarily, to be gaining the upper hand, this massacre of civilians, which the French carried out in reprisal for the insurrection, has been painted in the most eye-catching colours. Here, in glowing whites, golds and scarlets against the sombre blacks, greys and browns of the background, the doomed men are immortalized, the street fighters from the Second of May meet their fate. One or two are recognizable the corpse sprawled below the living victims, a prone male figure with matted blood-soaked hair and shattered skull, is identifiable as the hero with the dagger, stabbing the horse in the right-hand foreground of the proceeding picture.

Phiadon Press, 18. Page 6.
Most of the victims have faces. The killers do not. This is one of the most often-noted aspects of the Third of May, and rightly so with this painting, the modern image of war as anonymous killing is born, and a long tradition of killing as ennobled spectacle comes to its overdue end.
From Robert Hughes book, Goya,
Knopf Books, 00. Page 17.
No other artist in Western civilization can equal Goya in lyricism or power. He just may be the most courageous painter of all time. This painting condemns organized brutality in a way that stands alone in excellence. This scene of slaughter captures every detail of a group of gleeful hateful men destroying their fellow men. Nothing else in all of art equals the violence, the black terror of the moment, with those guns pointed at the group of unarmed victims. This is a difficult painting to look at for extended periods of time and may even cause nightmares.
The Shootings of the Third of May, 1808 (1814) by Spanish painter Francisco Goya (Prado, Madrid). When Napoleon occupied Spain, Goyas bitter disillusionment with the French Revolution was reflected in such dramatic works as this, which commemorates the execution of a group of Madrid citizens. (Image Art Archive)
Spanish painter and engraver. One of the major figures of European art, Goya depicted all aspects of Spanish life portraits, including those of the royal family, religious works, scenes of war and of everyday life. Towards the end of his life, he created strange, nightmarish works, the Black Paintings, with such horrific images as Saturn Devouring One of His Sons (c. 18 Prado, Madrid). His series of etchings include The Disasters of War (181014), depicting the horrors of the French invasion of Spain.
Goya was born in Aragn. After studying in Italy, he returned to Spain and was employed on a number of paintings for the royal tapestry factory as well as numerous portraits. In 178 he was appointed court painter to Charles IV. The eroticism of his Naked Maja and Clothed Maja (c. 180005 Prado, Madrid) caused such outrage that he was questioned by the Inquisition. The Shootings of May rd 1808 (1814 Prado, Madrid), painted for Ferdinand VII, is passionate in its condemnation of the inhumanity of war. Technically, Goya attained brilliant effects by thin painting over a red earth ground. Much influenced by Rembrandt (Rembrandt, Velzquez, and Nature were, he said, his guides), he turned in later years to a dusky near-monochrome. His skill, however, seemed to increase with age, and the Milkmaid of Bordeaux, one of his last paintings, shows him using colour with great freedom.
I specifically like this painting, May Third, because of its realism and its portrayal of how evil our human race really is. The background is solemn and does not attract attention to itself- besides giving a setting to the place of the event. The background is drab and dark and lets you focus on the main focal point, which is the actual shooting. I like the use of color to highlight the main occurrence and the shapes of the bodies either dead or alive. The color can make is so realistic that you feel like you were there. The texture of the cold skin on the dead contrasts with the supple skin on the bodies of the living.
There is a balance between life, death, and the portrayal of more death to come. The emphasis is not placed on the main event of the shooting and the dead bodies and blood, but more on the emotions of the people who see their fate and lives clearly flashing before their eyes. Your eyes follow the movement in the painting from the faceless soldiers to the face of the man in the shape of the Christ and clothed in white- and about to die. I like the contrast of the white shirt on the rebel to the dark background and drab clothing of the soldiers and the men around them. Even the blood has been dulled to draw focus to the man in the white shirt, awaiting his fate in fear.

The physics of high-temperature, multi-keV, collisionless plasmas, usually immersed in a magnetic field of complex geometry, is dominated by the behavior of unique many-body systems in which collective phenomena dominate over rare two-body collisions. These plasmas are usually far from the thermodynamic equilibrium, due to sources of mode-excitation energy that owe their existence to factors including electrodynamic forces with spatial inhomogeneties (this is the case in magnetic or inertial confinement systems with gradients of density, temperature, magnetic field, etc.); the presence of high-energy subgroups of particles (or beams); and large-amplitude electromagnetic waves that propagate in the plasma and transfer their energy, inducing strong nonlinear interactions among background collective modes and charged particles.
At MIT, pioneering investigations on the physical properties of high temperature plasmas at very high densities have been carried out for more than two decades by the Alcator experimental program. Alcator is an acronym for the Latin phrase Alto Campo Torus, meaning high field torus. The Alcator A and C tokamaks in the 170s and 180s operated at very high magnetic fields (up to 1 Tesla) and ultra high densities (ne = x 1015cm), and surpassed the minimum required value of the plasma density times every confinement time for fusion breakeven (although at lower temperatures then necessary for true breakeven conditions). At lower densities, significant toroidal plasma currents were generated efficiently by high-power traveling electromagnetic waves with frequencies in the GHz range.
The Alcator confinement and the current drive experiments both received the Excellence in Plasma Physics Research Award of the American Physical Society. Following these successes, the Plasma Science and Fusion Center proceeded to build a new, state-of-the-art high magnetic field experiment, Alcator C-Mod, which has an advanced magnetic divertor and allows for optimal shaping of the plasma cross-section. PSFC scientists have achieved truly exciting results by being able to heat high density plasmas in C-Mod to 6 keV temperature by injecting multi-MW radio frequency power at the ion cyclotron frequency (80 MHz). The ultimate goal of these experiments is to find a path to achieve thermonuclear ignition in laboratory experiments. Thus, a considerable effort is being devoted to the Ignitor project, first proposed and studied at MIT; this program has begun the construction of prototype components in Italy for the first machine capable of achieving fusion burn conditions.
We should also mention here the MIT experimental program in Inertial Fusion. Researchers and graduate students carry out experiments off-site at the Nova laser facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, as well as at the OMEGA facility at the University of Rochester. Their objective is to understand the physics of pellet implosion and fusion products during intense laser irradiation of targets.

The anticipation of a comedy genius was too much for the biggest fan of the situation comedy, ‘The Common Room’. As Ian Rogers, better known as Gary Daniels made his way through the front door and sat down on the large leather couch, his unmistakable smile imprinted on his face, this fan could not contain his excitement, ‘I don’t believe this its Gary, the Muhammad Ali of the Common Room’. His reply “naturally” was subtle and perhaps already illustrated a similarity in comparison with a controlling character he plays so vibrantly. Indeed he has been disparaged by one critic as being the most manipulative and self- orientated pupil ever. This description although profound is certainly accurate.
Upon opening the conversation, he gestures to shake my hand, and being the ‘big fan’ I do not decline yet, in attempting to he swiftly moves his palm away leaving me looking rather foolish. Feeling rather shamefaced my first question is deliberately insightful questioning his physical capabilities in comparison with other cast members. Unfortunately, Ian seems vaguely bemused by it. “Yeah definitely me, I grew up in Brixton, London and to be honest it wasn’t a royal palace, if you know what I mean, although my house sometimes had a policeman outside so technically I did have a tad of royalty”. I construed this as a joke but as I had already been the focus of amusement, I declined to laugh. “No seriously, you had to fight everyday, not actually punch someone but you know mentally. I think that has helped me”.
Ian’s childhood evoked an image of a departed age of innocence although as a child he was encouraged to express his individuality. Unfortunately, little opportunities arose. Nevertheless his immediate affinity with drama inspired a truly great English comic to be unleashed, an experience he reminisces about with considerable gratification, “I really wasn’t too clever at school, I only got four GCE’s and I think two of those were moderated by examiners who pitied me. However I genuinely enjoyed Drama, it was a way of expressing myself”. Ian vividly remembers his first acting role of significance with great amusement, “I was Macbeth. It was a hard transforming my individuality into a Shakespearian character, although I think my performance went particularly well. However, there was one insignificant drawback. A lad, who was endeavouring to challenge me for the main acting role, regrettably received a smash across his head in a battle scene and he was rushed to hospital. That rather dampened the mood of the play, although I did strike him quite hard, not that I have shown remorse. It is a dog eat dog world out there”. That reply was typically Gary, a manipulative, egotistical control freak, who will do anything to prevail. Nevertheless, his character is refreshingly unique and terribly entertaining, ‘If a problem arises extinguish it, not literally though cos’ that will make the situation bit soggy’. Examples such as this truly demonstrate Gary’s individuality and perhaps differentiate him from other characters.
Ian will forever be remembered as the only ever ‘Part time Christian’. This scene provoked a large discussion concerning the state of religious education in schools across England. However, Ian believes it was a blessing in disguise and ultimately assisted his promising career in comedy, “At first I couldn’t really believe the passage, I mean it was preposterous and when I first tackled it I was greeted by a chorus of laughter, including my own. It was ultimately ludicrous but it was comical. The last line was absolutely dreadful to perform mainly because everyone else was in mass hysteria”.
Ian attended ‘The Brixton School of Drama’ at the age of sixteen; having successfully negotiated auditions the previous month. An event, which he found particularly nerve-wracking as he considered it his only passage to notoriety. “I remember it well, it was the proverbial ‘crap your pants’ day. Although, having overcome my uncertainties I relaxed and in fact performed fluently. I was astonished a couple of long weeks later after I received a letter notifying my selection for a further audition. I was so proud with my accomplishment”. Ian starred in many minor productions and then unexpectedly he received a call from the producer of a situation comedy called ‘The Common Room’. “Obviously they were awestruck at my acting capabilities and so chose me”, he declares conceitedly concerning his selection.
The general perception from his role as Gary in the Common Room is that Ian is quite a preposterous and exaggerative person. Lines such as ‘This is a man’s game, not some nancy boy, friendly etiquette, ooohhh I’ll wipe your bum afterwards croquet match’, truly differentiate him from any other characters and due to this Ian has become quite the proverbial ‘household name’ in Brixton. “Whenever I visit Brixo, as I call it, I’m always in a state of constant panic, in case I get mobbed. I remember once, I was walking down the High Street when three women chased me, screaming, and no they were not particularly elegant”.
The preposterous assumption in comparing an actor and his/her character is becoming evermore prevalent in today’s society. The sweeping generalisation that accompanies Ian is the subject of my next question, with which Ian has always been deeply associated. “I knew you would ask that, I am definitely different in comparison with Gary. Obviously, there is a little of his egotistical viewpoints within me but I am definitely not a patronising person. In fact, his patronising approach is purely because Gary feels it is necessary to assert a manipulative influence over various characters. I, on the contrary, recognise my own inadequacies, and therefore I think we are entirely different”.Gary’s swagger is construed by many, as an indication of confidence but ultimately his personality epitomizes someone who is insecure and this reflected by his commandment of language, ‘I am the Muhammad Ali of this shithole although it’s not hard....’ In a way, it is difficult to comprehend Gary. His constant arrogance and self- orientation, questions how he maintains such a close friendship with the five characters. Ian labels Gary as an ‘oxymoron’. “He is a friendly villain,” he states. Many people, myself included see Gary as harmless but ultimately his arrogance conveys an egotistical edge, which if construed wrongly can result in him being characterized as a conceited bully. Ian goes on to elaborate upon what he believes Gary’s most obnoxious attribute is, “It is definitely his inability to listen, to consider others. He gets involved in unnecessary situations and therefore creates an inescapable hole, so to speak.” Gary’s insistence on being correct has much to do with his reputation and therefore he perceives a loss in an argument as a blow to his reputation. It is therefore paramount that he is always correct.
Ian’s newfound celebrity eminence is not only a testament to his self- belief but also to his genuine talent for acting. A loyal fan base is amassing and his impressive performances in ‘The Common Room’ have seen him receive a wide diversity of filming opportunities, one of which he has accepted. “It is called The Mismatch” he chuckles. “It regards an incessantly ridiculed outcast, the applauded Ian Roger’s, who works out to fight a tormenting pupil, Chris Klein. It is a combination of Gladiator and Terminator with a helping of comedy except far better”. Even though Ian is not acclaimed stateside, he maintains that he enjoys the anonymity, “I am able to leave my hotel or house not having to be completely conscious about others, in case I get lynched, although sometimes I wander why people are so obsessed by my acting, it is not as if I have received an Oscar”.
Ian Roger’s complicated viewpoint concerning his own success is somewhat eccentric and totally contrary to the egotistical character that he plays. Sometimes he embraces his accomplished performances by throwing celebratory parties although on other occasions he duly discounts his achievements. Although, Hollywood is an existing project it seems Ian is completely focused on producing a second series of the illustrious ‘Common Room’. “Yeah I definitely would like to produce a second series. It is an astounding concept and I copiously enjoyed working on such a critically acclaimed comedy”. Ian’s enthusiasm of continuing the situation comedy can only be to the detriment of other comical attempts. The slick productions in conjunction with an exceptional cast can only again, serve as a demonstration displaying the natural ability of actor Ian Rogers a.k.a. Gary Daniels.

How and why did England lead the way during the industrial revolution in the 19th century?

England lead the way for the Industrial Revolution as the Agricultural Revolution and the rise of capitalism changed the purpose and nature of the work industry. Before the Industrial Revolution, villages fed themselves, and animals grazed in common pastures. The farmers would leave one field fallow every season because they wanted to save the soil. They realized this wasn’t efficient so they started to plant turnips, clovers, and use all the fields so that more could grow at once. They needed to change their way of work because the old way wasn’t efficient. Early capitalism can be seen in the cottage industry. Capitalism is an economic system based on private ownership, free competition, and profit.
As the cottage industry couldn’t keep up with the demand for textiles, production moved to factories. The merchant’s role in the cottage industry was to supply the materials (wool and cotton) to the cottages to be carded and spun. The process took a long time because the workers had to take the supplies to different buildings. They took the supplies from the spinning cottages to the weaving cottages, and then to the dying cottages where they would sell it as finished cloth. The merchants would sell their products for more than the material and labor costs which would give them a higher profit. When the factories were built and they didn’t have to move from place to place the cloth was finished faster.
The growing number of factories provided many jobs for people across England. This was an alternative source of income for peasants, and the new class of merchants made a big profit. The new inventions were the spinning jenny, water frame, and spinning mule which improved the spinning. The power loom sped up weaving and the cotton gin separated seeds from cotton. The factories had to be located near rivers because they used the push of water to make the machines work. Britain’s textile industry increased enormously, and the majority of villagers were forced to leave their small towns and find work in urban factories.
Textile production was increased with the invention of the coal powered steam engine. Early factories relied on horses, oxen, and water mills. The steam engine evolved in response to the increasing need for power. Steam power was used wherever coal existed, and it greatly increased textile production and improved mining. More metals were produced because of the mining, which in turn helped fuel other industries. The factories no longer needed to be located next to a river so people were able to move and still have a job. Coal was needed in order to power steam engines so mining became a popular job. Britain produced more iron than all other countries in the world combined, and coal powered Britain’s enormous navy. As the production changed so did forms of transportation.
Do my coursework
Changes in production lead to other new inventions, including inventions that “revolutionized” transportation. Before the inventions of stone roads, canals, and railroads, pre-industrial society used horses, and mules on dirt roads as their source of transportation. People in England could pay less money for transportation and could travel faster from place to place. The railways fueled other industries which contributed positively to work of people. The railroad expanded rapidly through Britain and pollution started to become a problem. New cities and towns were built because of the fast access to different parts of the country.
Geographical, political, and social factors helped make Britain the leader of the industrial revolution. The climate in Britain was good for textile production, and they had many natural resources such as iron and coal available which helped factories grow. The government allowed people to relocate while encouraging internal trade. The government also helped build roads and canals which made the transportation more accessible and faster. Britain was the first country to industrialize so no other countries were competing for manufactured goods, and their technology helped them become stronger and more advanced than the surrounding countries

In preparation for a new business to business future, the doors have opened for the emergence of ERP (Enterprise Resource System), which was once thought to be on the verge of extinction. Many companies such as Procter and Gamble Co. are utilizing their integrated Enterprise Resource System to view their complete inventory lists in their supply chain. By having an integrated ERP system they are making a better strategic decision, which helps them implement more effective business decisions.
The resurgence of popularity for ERP has persuaded many companies to try and capitalize on its monstrous comeback. In keeping with the trend, People Soft Inc. is scheduled to introduce 4 new product lines that are aimed at Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM). People Soft is expected to roll out a procurement package designed for service industries, not to mention their new customer-facing products, such as sales and marketing applications, and a call-center support application. To keep up with the increasing market demand, ERP vendors are claiming that they can provide modular applications with measurable return on investment (ROI) almost as soon as their product goes into production. This is very enticing for many large companies. As the integration market has evolved vendors have begun to create modules for implementation.
Building a B-to-B marketplace starts with understanding where value is created. The next step is to capture that value by creating substantial liquidity from both information as well as transactions. Many markets are finding transaction fees an impediment to increasing their trading volume. The surge of creativity in solutions for B-to-B e-commerce has led to net market makers, and now to models that facilitate one-to-one commerce. Given this new century of the internet, it’s important for the companies building new solutions to clearly understand the sources of value they intend to create, and in particular how they will capture some of that value. Since much of this value flows from information about transactions, successful companies must be creative in how they capture this information, and provide either a broad range of online transaction types, or develop a mechanism to capture offline transactions. The more successful companies in the markets will be those that can articulate how they create value and then demonstrate the reality of that vision through the internet.
The generation of B-to-B marketplaces with the internet is more focused on partnering with suppliers for direct material purchasing in order to remove inefficiencies from the entire product development and delivery process. Vendors are flocking to the supply-chain management space to offer software that often dramatically shifts the traditional buyer/supplier interaction from a distant, adversarial association focus on price negotiations to an intimate relationship focused on collaboration. Solutions are intended to allow buyers to whittle away at inventory and improve manufacturing efficiency by providing visibility of what’s going on up and down the supply chain. With the internet, it provides better Supply-chain collaboration connection between enterprises and the suppliers. E-marketplaces are just the first step in a movement that will leverage the internet to make supply chains more flexible, better integrated, more efficient and much speedier. Within a few years, B-to-B marketplaces will be integrated with traditional supply chains creating virtual supply integration (V-SCI).

There are five key areas where the internet improves efficiencies across the supply chain
• Decreases procurement costs. Buyers aggregate suppliers catalogs online, decreasing the time and costs to requisition products and reducing processing errors.
• Reduces product development cycle times. Suppliers and manufactures can share information at a single point-of-contact in real-time.
• Streamlines inventory management. Shared knowledge across the supply chain makes build-to-order manufacturing easier.
• Creates new market opportunities. Suppliers gain exposure to more potential customers.
• Improves customer service. New web-based technologies-e-mail response management, web collaboration and chat-complement voice based customer relationship management tools.
The goal is to get all of the suppliers to use the same transaction methodology. Successful integration of suppliers and back-office systems is perhaps the most crucial and most difficult aspect of supplier collaboration. Issues such as moving away from traditional payment mechanisms to real-time settlement for transactions and swapping batch-oriented transactions that a company processes several times a week for real-time purchases, changes the rules with an organization. In most industries, 80 percent of purchases occur between long-term partners, much of it under contract, so this one-to-one trading model is also likely to have more rapid adoptions than a many-to-many marketplace model that does not focus on creating value. So it’s important for the suppliers themselves to keep up with this methodology.

Will school choice significantly improve educational standards? This is the fundamental question in school choice policy debates. Are vouchers the solution or do they just compound the problem? Teachers unions believe school choice will destroy the public school system, a mainstay of government responsibility. Yet others argue that the failings of public education are the primary reason why certain groups are held back from advancing their place in society. Who is right? More importantly, whose interests will win out?
As American support for the public education system dwindles, many parents find the only place for their children to receive a quality education is in a private school. The areas that are most important to a private school are also the ones that seem to be lacking in public schools. These include safety, order, teaching the basics and challenging young minds.
Across the nation, public education systems continue to fail students; therefore many have chosen to attend private Catholic high schools to receive an education that will better prepare them for college. Overcrowded public high schools have been dealing with the problems of insufficient funding, large class sizes, students who simply refuse to learn and are disruptive.
Due to an increase in violent acts committed, many public high schools have instituted low level security measures to ensure the safety of students. The types of security found in these schools include closed campuses, controlled access to the school building and grounds, random drug and metal detector, banning certain types of clothing, and either full or part time security guards have been assigned. How can students be expected to learn and teachers educate in an environment like this?

Bob McCormick is in second grade. He has two older brothers, Chris and Tom, who are both in High School. Although all three children would be better suited at a private school across town, due to tuition costs, they attend the public schools where most of the kids in their neighborhood attend. However, if the government adopted a system of vouchers, the economically deprived wouldnt be in this situation. Bob is not alone; he is one of the millions upon millions of poor families in America. Many of these families could use a better education.
During Bobs time in school hes witnessed approximately 100 fights, teachers being assaulted by students and numerous drug and weapons arrests. Many of these acts were merely boyish fights and left no lasting impression. One incident that has scarred him for life was when a student came to school with a five-inch knife and proceeded to stab an administrator in front of approximately seventy students. The victim recovered fully and the perpetrator, who at the time was fifteen, is now in jail. Is this the atmosphere that children should be placed in to receive the fundamental elements of education that will prepare them for high school and eventually college?
There is enough concern about the quality of education in public schools that many private schools have been bombarded with applications in recent years. The problems facing many public schools are non-existent at most private schools. They have no need to institute security measures because discipline is not a problem. Students know that the school board can expel anyone that hinders learning in the classroom. Disruptive and violent actions are taken seriously and are not tolerated under any circumstance.
Private schools across the nation have fewer disciplinary problems than public schools because they can be selective in whom they choose to accept into there institute. Those who apply truly want to learn and are willing to spend thousands of dollars a year to ensure that they receive the best education possible. With that money they dont expect to have to fear for their safety, or fear that they will not learn anything in class because one person is disruptive.
Choice-based reforms, such as vouchers and charter schools, depend on the idea that schools will have to satisfy parents to keep their customers. They provide parents with a portion of the public educational funding allotted for their child to attend school, and allow them to use those funds to attend the school of their choice. It gives them the fiscal authority to send their child to the educational institution that best suits their child, whether it is a religious or parochial school, another private school, or a neighborhood or magnet public school. If parents place a high priority on academics, then schools with strong academic programs will do well under school choice.
If parents want their children to learn disciplined work habits, then schools that teach such habits will thrive under school choice. If parents choose schools based on their sports programs, then schools emphasizing sports will succeed. These programs empower the family and, in so doing, infuse consumer accountability into the traditional public schools system. Shame on us for not realizing that there are parents in this country who today support vouchers not because they are enamored with private schools but because they want a choice for their children. (Kerry)
One benefit that is gained by implementing charter schools is that they help to restore a more civil society. Chester Finn from Policy Review states that charter schools not only reinvent education, but install long-lasting values in the minds of young students. He also states that they are the engine to a better society. Only through charter schools can society reach a new moral peak.
A second advantage with installing school choice programs is that it will close the socio-economic gap. This is proven by many that by helping out the economically deprived to find the school of their choice and aid them in any financial obligations, that those students will be less likely to be economically deprived due to a better education. In simpler terms, the poor become better educated and become professionals later on in life.
In Vermonts educational choice system, the town school board pays tuition for students to attend any public or approved private school that their parents choose. Here is how they deal with the tuition
The school board of a so-called tuition town is required by law to pay the full tuition charged by a public school. It must pay an independent school an amount equal to the average tuition charge of the states union high school districts ($5,0 in school year 1-4). If the tuition at the selected independent school is greater than this amount, the school district may pay the larger amount, but it is not required to do so. The parents must cover any difference. (McClaughry, -4)
Good News v. Milford is especially welcome news for supporters of school vouchers and government funding of faith-based organizations. A majority of the Court now affirms that when aid is offered to a broad range of groups or persons without regard to their religion there can be no violation of the separation of church and state. Saving the future of our country by educating our children should not be thought of as a Democratic or Republican idea. Indeed, those who ponder whether or not they should support school choice because it is a Republican or conservative initiative are missing the point that the future of our children is at stake. (Flake)
Vouchers hold the promise of elevating teaching to professional status, raising levels of student achievement, and restoring the confidence of the taxpaying public. If teachers do not embrace this idea, they should at least develop thoughtful arguments that show why the plan is unworkable. Until educators and their associations agrees that dissent is not only acceptable but encouraged, the public will continue to perceive education as just another in a long list of non-performing, over-bureaucratized, autocratic government programs that usurp individual liberty.

Rivers of Death
The very basic overall concept behind this article is that pesticides kill aquatic life. Needless to say, this is a bad thing. This article refers to cases of pesticide spraying back in the 150’s. Different pesticides sprayed all over Canada and the United States, all had very negative effects on the life in streams and rivers.
One of these pesticides that is most harmful to the environment is DDT. In 154 DDT was sprayed from planes in the forests of the Northwest Miramichi in Canada to control budworms. The DDT was a mixture of ½ pound of DDT per acre, with oil. Within a few days after the spraying, dead fish started appearing on the banks of the stream. Many of the insects that the fish fed upon were killed by the DDT, so the fish had no food supply. The DDT sprayings continue in Canada, and even when they use half the amount of DDT it still kills many fish. In the USA where a full pound of DDT per acre is used, similar cases of DDT spraying wipe out more aquatic life.
DDT is not the only pesticide that kills fish and other unintentional organisms. In the Southern United States many pesticides were sprayed to combat fire ants. These pesticides are mainly Heptachlor and Dieldrin. Both of these pesticides are very harmful to aquatic life and only surpassed by Endrin and Toxaphene. Everywhere any of these pesticides were sprayed, many aquatic life forms died. After people started realizing how terrible these pesticides were, a resolution passed in 158 prevented them from being sprayed from planes. This did not prevent many farmers spraying their crops without planes to control boll weevils. The rain washed the pesticides into the streams and killed more fish. DDT and other harmful pesticide chemicals were also deposited into streams by careless pesticide factories.

This article suggests that some of the money spent on more toxic pesticides should be spent on research to prevent them from entering aquatic systems. This research and the use of biological controls would be much better for the environment, especially aquatic life.

Employee Development and Training
SMC is currently faced with some challenges that will determine whether or not the organization will succeed or fall short of its goals. Taking into consideration the demand for SMC’s product increase, a workforce where fifty percent of the employees are bilingual, and our need to globalize and diversify our organization, the company’s employee development and training department must step forward and address these factors by strengthening and/or re-evaluating the previous steps we have adopted in the past by creating new and improved training and development programs. Let us look at the previous programs that we have implemented.
Education and Career Development
SMC has implemented various educational and career development methods to help our employees achieve their career or development goals by creating the following
Do my coursework
· Educational Reimbursement Program - Provides financial assistance for educational courses that encourages self-development, improves current job-related skills, and helps with career development within SMC.
· Internal Development Program Provides computer-based training (e-Learning), mentoring programs, and development courses (self-study).
Using these programs as a foundation and then building upon them to increase their potential will be a greater benefit for our employees.
Educational Reimbursement Program
The Educational Reimbursement Program targets individuals who would like to continue their formal education by obtaining a college degree. By investing in our employees, the return benefits both the employee and employer.
Employees are appreciated while enhancing their value to the company as their knowledge and skills increase. SMC would improve upon this program with the following
· Scheduling flexibility SMC will structure working hours to accommodate school schedules
· Fast Track Program Employees will be able to advance quicker within the organization if they complete their degree
These improvements will show our workers that we are interested in their self-improvement--and that can pay off big in employee retention and enthusiasm.
Internal Development Program
We can increase our retention rate by setting employees up for success from day one with our orientation process. Following this with good cross training, sharing information, involvement, and communication can increase the internal development program. In business today, the front line employee wants to be valued. Here are three ways we can improve our internal development program
1. Improve our orientation program
First, we should start out on the right foot by creating a successful orientation program for SMC’s human resource department. When people start a new job, they are more concerned with themselves. Over time, they become aware of how they fit into the team, and later if properly orientated, they see how they fit into the big picture. It goes from, What am I trying to accomplish? in the early months, to What are we trying to accomplish? months down the road.
By creating a formal orientation program, we are able to control what employees are exposed to from the beginning. If we cannot wait to start a new employee on the day of orientation, we can at least pair up the new hire with a positive employee who will make a good impression. SMC will not wait too long to introduce the culture of the organization. Employees are extremely impressionable their first days on a new job.
. Sharing information
We can increase our chances of keeping employees if we have good communication. Again, we should make them a part of the team by involving them in the process. Holding weekly department meetings and using that time to update and educate them will broaden the organizational knowledge of our employees. Sharing articles from industry publications so they know what the competition is doing and asking employees to share feedback and ideas will make employees feel important.
. Cross training employees
Cross training employees help to improve internal development. We are not only molding the future leaders of our company, but we are also creating a group of people who can do anything we need them to do. This creates a sense of pride and teamwork, keeping entry-level workers from reaching burnout as quickly. Cross training is important in creating the team. As employees adjust to the culture of our organization, their thinking goes from How is my performance? to How is my teams performance?
We will not have to spend as much time interviewing applicants and training new people due to turnover if SMC spends a little extra time at the beginning.
