James Baldwin, a homosexual African American, the grandson of a slave focuses his writing on his “blackness” and environment (Harlem) in his essay, “Notes of a Native Son.” There are three things that affect Baldwin the most, his race, his prejudice riotous society and the reconciliation with his father that he experiences. The essay concentrates on three important sections or effects; Harlem as a prejudice society, Baldwin’s father’s funeral, and, Baldwin’s blackness and how he deals with his blackness. The funeral day of Baldwin’s father there was mass hysteria in Harlem. Baldwin says,

A few hours after my father’s funeral, while he lay in state in the undertaker’s chapel, a race riot broke out in Harlem. On the morning of the rd of August, we drove my father to the graveyard through a wilderness of smashed plate glass. (Page 5)

The smashed plate glass symbolizes the broken community and broken life that Baldwin’s father led. The tumultuous racial tensions in Harlem never ceased to die even with James Baldwin’s father who was a bitter man. Much like Baldwin’s father’s life his funeral is surrounded by what essentially was wrong with Harlem; the poverty and racial hatred. His father was a very sequestered man. He couldn’t live with white people because of the slavery issue; Baldwin’s grandfather was a slave from New Orleans. Not showing any love for your children caused much despair in the life of Baldwin’s father. There is a schism of love and hate inside his father. Baldwin says,

In my mind’s eye I could see him, sitting at the window, locked up in his terrors; hating and fearing every living soul including his children who had betrayed him, too, by reaching towards the world which had despised him. (Page 54)




This proves that Baldwin’s father was in fact mentally ill and bitter towards everyone and everything including his own family because he was so greatly affected by the poverty and enslavement of his ancestors.

Baldwin cannot escape the racism either. His father taught him how to hate and he knew hatred from his father before he experienced it himself. Baldwin writes so vividly,

She did not ask me what I wanted, but repeated, as though she had learned it somewhere, ‘We don’t serve Negroes here.’ She did not say it with the blunt, derisive hostility to which I had grown so accustomed, but, rather, with a note of apology in her voice, and fear. This made me colder and more murderous than ever. I felt I had to do something with my hands. I wanted her to come close enough for me to get her neck between my hands. (Page 58)

Baldwin, in this particular passage succumbs to his self-conscious demons. Baldwin writes a letter to his nephew James about not falling into this racial trap of hatred. Baldwin does not want James to make the mistakes that he himself had made in the past with whites and his father. For Baldwin never had the opportunity to talk with his father about the future, he regrets this with all of his heart. It was always so hard for him to talk with his father for their relationship “had got on badly.” White people oppress blacks from the Harlem ghetto by not serving them in certain “white” restaurants. This is why Baldwin is so upset with the white waitress in the fashionable restaurant. Baldwin’s upbringing (Harlem) and, the affects of his own father bestowed an immense amount of anger into his mind, body, and soul. Baldwin states, “The principle damage done during the riot of the summer of 14 was to white business establishments in Harlem.” (Page 66) Why to white business establishments? Those businesses had all the money. If you are an impoverished person in general and you have to beg that butcher for the cheapest piece of meat or even for just bones the reader begins to understand and realize why poor, oppressed people revolt and riot. Also according to a widespread tale Baldwin mentions that a black soldier was trying to protect a little black girl when a white cop shot the soldier in the back. This tale magnifies the hate that exists between whites and blacks. Baldwin says, “The effect, in Harlem, of this particular legend was like the effect of a lit match in a tin of gasoline.” (Page 66) This rumor sparked enough chaos in order to riot and revolt against the horrific racial trespasses on blacks. The riots of Harlem and Detroit symbolize the racial atrocities present in Baldwin’s lifetime. How do you bring hope into your life in such a place? How are you supposed to sing your baby a lullaby in such a place of turmoil? Ghetto life was eating away at Baldwin’s entrails for too long. Baldwin’s father tries to instill this pre-conceived notion that white people as an ethnic group are evil and are trying to destroy black people from their rightful society. Baldwin never forgets what his father says; his father has an immense impact on his life. Baldwin explains the situation of black soldiers being drafted into World War II. Blacks fought for their country in segregated divisions. For a person to put his or her life on the line to fight and die for their country there should be no discrimination in doing so, for that is the ultimate sacrifice. Blacks in the 140’s were not seen as equals in America nor on the battlefields. Baldwin is writing about his lifetime which in the grand scheme of things is apart of U.S. history.

Baldwin’s father is a minister whom he never gets to know as a true loving parent. There are few instances where Baldwin can say his father did or said something well for him. His father complimented his brilliant choir boy voice in church, which brought much joy to his father. Baldwin says, “I remembered that he had always been grinning with pleasure when my solos ended.” (Page 64) Indeed his father was proud of his son at one point in his life. For the most part Baldwin’s father was cruel, separated, and hateful. Baldwin’s father drove his family farther and farther away from him. His father was so full of hatred that it consumed him like gangrene which is slow and demoralizing till the day he died. His father had nine children including James whom he could not afford to put food on the table for. How hard and demoralizing that must be to go through for any father. All that Baldwin has so strongly imprinted in his mind about his father is that he told him to never trust white people. Ultimately, his father’s hatred for whites destroys him and causes much anger in his son’s life. Baldwin’s father believes the white man is essentially evil and will do anything in his power to take advantage of the black man. The only white people that Baldwin’s father let into his home were bill collectors and welfare workers. Baldwin’s father is so frustrated with his life that he takes it out on his family.

Baldwin feels the rage that was learned, acquired and, passed down from his father, he let’s loose against his enemy in the fancy restaurant, white people. Baldwin says, “There was nothing on the table but an ordinary water-mug half full of water, and I picked this up and hurled it with all my strength at her. She ducked and it missed her and shattered against the mirror behind the bar.” (Page 58) The horror and real anger against whites that Baldwin possesses is clearly conveyed in this quote, he is fed up with them. His father’s “preaching’s” have finally come out, all that hatred pours out in the restaurant. He wants to show them how black he really is. Baldwin is sick of the white mans’ ignorance. He went so far as to try and choke the white waitress, he could not do so, so from a distance Baldwin threw a half-mug of water at her with the evil intention to do damage. Baldwin comes to the recognition that he was close to killing and being killed in this situation. Baldwin says, “I could not get over two facts, both equally difficult for the imagination to grasp, and one was that I could have been murdered. But the other was that I had been ready to commit murder.” (Page 5) His rage drives him to the brink of destruction. He can not live with all this hatred suppressed inside of him anymore. Baldwin comes to the realization that this hatred is almost inescapable for it has been instilled and apart of his ancestry, “I saw that this had been for my ancestors and now would be for me an awful thing to live with and that the bitterness which had helped to kill my father could also kill me.” (Page 54) He’s talking about the racism, slavery crisis and, poverty that he carries with him like a ball and chain.

When one of Baldwin’s white elementary teachers’ offers to pick him up for the purpose of education, Baldwin’s father says to himself what would this white female teacher want with his young black son? Baldwin says,

Also, since it was a schoolteacher, I imagine that my mother countered the idea of sin with the idea of “education,” which word, even with my father, carried a kind of bitter weight. (Page 55)

This teacher took Baldwin to see “real” plays and further educated him. Baldwin never read the bible because he was forced to read it. Baldwin’s father had been very stubborn and bitter with others. Baldwin’s father asked his son what interest this white female schoolteacher could have in him and in their house. Baldwin had been exposed to good white people but he is so poisoned by the ghetto life of Harlem and his father’s effect it is hard for him to reconcile, until his father’s death and funeral. Baldwin has a profound realization that he arrives at by the time his father has passed. He didn’t know his father until his eulogy. His father’s eulogy didn’t sound anything like the man he really was. Baldwin wishes that his father would’ve been around more so he could’ve had someone to talk to about the future. When his father is dying in the hospital Baldwin says to the reader, “I wanted to take his hand, to say something.” (Page 61) Baldwin is afraid to go and visit him in the hospital because he didn’t want see him dying, that’s the reality. Baldwin loved his father after all the pain he had caused himself and his family. He has sorrow for him when he is dying, laying there like “a little black monkey.” He realizes he had lost something in life and that was sharing time with his father while he was still alive and just talking to him, he never had that in his life nor would he ever have the chance to do so. Through his writing he in someway reconciles the lost relationship between father and son.

Robin and Ralph serve brief, yet significant roles in scenes VIII and IX of Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Joyce allows the reader to perceive surroundings through Stephen’s sensual experiences. Perception through the senses appears continually throughout the novel from Stephen’s early childhood through his adolescence, all the way to his epiphany at the end of chapter four.

The novel begins with an introduction to Stephen’s childhood through descriptions based around the senses. The sense of sight is mentioned when Joyce writes “...his father [looked] at him through a glass...”(1). The sense of touch is introduced with the line “...he had a hairy face”(1) and with the description of the feeling of wetting a bed. It is explained that first it feels warm and then it gets cold. Smell is first mentioned when Stephen describes the oilsheet that his mother placed over his bed after he wet it. He says it has a queer smell. The sense of smell is also utilized with the line “His mother had a nicer [smell] than his father” (1). Finally, descriptions of how Stephen would sing songs as his mother played the sailor’s hornpipe on the piano touches on the sense of hearing.




Perception through senses reaches dramatic level as the novel continues. One example is during the sermons that Stephen experiences while away at his spiritual retreat in Belvedere. The priest at Belvedere gives three sermons brimming with extensive details of the horrors of Hell. These striking descriptions of terror are exceptionally agonizing for Stephen because the priest continually mentions how the sinners are suffering through their senses, and Stephen has always perceived the world through sensual experiences. Stephen’s use of sensory perception flourishes again to a remarkable level at the end of chapter four, though on an entirely different scale. This time, the heightened emotions and sensory awareness is of something beautiful. The girl that Stephen sees wading in the water is described thoroughly through his sense of sight with lines like “Her long slender bare legs were delicate as a crane’s and pure save where an emerald trail of seaweed had fashioned itself as a sign upon the flesh” (1). The sense of sound is mentioned when Stephen describes the faint noise that her foot makes as she gently stirs the water about her. Several references to the sense of touch are made with Stephen’s reaction to the girl, with the words “His cheeks were aflame; his body was aglow; his limbs were trembling” (1).

In this story, I see the conflict of man vs. man which is the relationship that Armand has with his wife. At the beginning of the story he is a very nice man, he doesn’t get angry, and treats everyone with respect. Tragedy comes to the family with the birth of their child. By the time the baby was three months old, neighbors and him noticed a change in the child. Towards the end of the story he treats everyone with indifference and seems to no longer care for his wife and son.“When the baby was about three months old, Desiree awoke one day to the conviction that there was something in the air menacing her peace.” It turns out that the baby is of mixed blood and because of this, Armand begins to avoid the wife and the child he was once so proud of. Another conflict that I see in the story is that of man vs. nature. Armand does not know that his mother has kept from him this secret. He wrongly judges his wife telling her she is not white. Armand was not able to resolve this conflict because it was not his fault that his mom had kept this secret from him. The other conflict that I see in the story is that of man vs. machine. Armand lived in a society where the bloodlines were essential for a family’s purity. And since his son was considered to be corrupted because of his mixed blood, his family was not seen well among the people of his society.

In addition to the conflicts within the story, I found that it lacked characterization. In this story I don’t see that the characters were well developed. We know little about all of them. We know that the wife has brown hair, gray eyes, and white hands. We just know that Armand is of mixed blood and that his wife is truly white. The baby, the story says, is pretty but it doesn’t mention any characteristics about him. The diction in the story is not so hard. It is the basic English that was used during the 1800s. It is understandable even though there are certain words which might need to be looked up in a dictionary. The dialogue within the story that I recall as being the most important is when Armand accused Desiree of not being white, and she denies it. “It is a lie it is not true, I am white look at my hair, it is brown and my eyes are gray, Armand you know they are gray.”“Look at my hand whiter than yours.” Armand.”




The story is written from a first person point of view. The narrator tells the story to the reader. There are a few quotes that he actually got from the characters, but apart from that everything else in the story is narrated. The setting of the story reinforces the position of women’s dependence on men. This story took place on the south in a plantation in L’Abri. The plantation is bordered by a field and a bayou, which makes the location totally isolated from the world.

Moreover, this story symbolizes one main thing. That men take for granted what they have. They think they are superior than women and have more authority than us. Women, on the other hand, are portrayed as weak, irresponsible and unable to take the lead in life. But the letter that Armand found and read is from his mother which reveals to him that he is who has a mixed blood. And that Desiree is not the one with the mixed blood. This letter symbolizes how Armand made the decision to abandoned his family in order to save his name, even though in the end he knows that the one with the cursed blood of slavery is him. The theme of this story is telling us that placing blame on outside forces can be tragic and misguided reaction leads to events that people encounter.

Indeed, I observe many aspects of this short story but the predominant one is that men back in the 1800s had the lead of the house. They were considered the superior authority and women were just the house wives who had to be isolated from the world. What is more ironic is that Armand had given up his marriage and condemned their child, burned everything that remind him of her and the baby, and curse God for his misfortune of having the mixed blood. In the end, all this came crashing down upon him when he found a simple letter with a very tragic significance to him. This tells us to never make an assumption that we latter might regret.

Coming from a society where engineers are highly respected and looked up to and being a son of a mechanical engineer, it was instinctive for me to aspire to be an engineer. I consider myself fortunate to have made it, considering the enormous cutthroat competition involved in the quest to make it to engineering college. It was my father’s dream, which became my passion and today I am just one semester away from becoming an engineer. I owe a lot to my parents, who went through innumerable hardships to give me what would probably be considered the best possible education in this part of the world.

Clearing the tough entrance examination I got into the Department of Chemical Engineering under the School of Chemical Technology, G.G.S. Indraprastha University. Core courses such as Mass Transfer, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Process Calculation, Fluid Mechanics, Chemical Process Industries, Chemical Process Control, Process Equipment Design, etc. gave me a strong footing into the intricacies of the fundamentals of chemical engineering and made me realize that Chemical engineering is not a profession that has to dwell on the achievements of the past for comfort, but its greatest accomplishments are yet to come.

Attending different seminars held in the universities and coming across many eminent professors and teachers in these years of my undergraduate studies, I have come to know the diversities of this profession and the great research potential it contains. The vast achievements made by these professors in this field made me set my mind for research and to continue my undergraduate studies up to the masters level, and later, a career in research and development.

My fascination towards research took me to one of the greatest institutions famous for their teaching and research i.e., Indian Institute of Technology- Delhi, where under Asst. Professor S. Basu I started a study on “Creaming Behavior of Oil-Water emulsions” and currently working on its modelling. I also developed a simulation software of the heat transfer laboratory for my department and would be continuing with the “Modeling of Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger” under a lecturer of the department. I am also working on my final year project “Design of Sulfuric Acid Plant” under Dr. S.S.Sambi (Head of Department, School of Chemical Technology)

It was during an 8-week training at Engineering India Ltd (a consultancy firm, pioneer in the field of petroleum processing) that I came to co-relate the actual functioning of engineering fundamentals learnt in the class. Here I was assigned a project on “Design of storage and dispatch system for Heavy Naphtha”. It was a very pleasant experience working with professionals and I drew immense pleasure in unveiling my engineering knowledge through technical and practical exposure.

The digital revolution has attracted my attention too. With my own interest I have picked up languages like Java, Visual Basic, HTML, DHTML etc and have special interest in networking. Have also learnt FORTRAN as a part of my undergraduate curriculum. In my school I was taught C++, in which I scored the highest marks (6%) in class 1th and even got a cash prize.

Ranging from certificates in Mathematics Olympiad to cash prizes for academic excellence, I strongly believe that my best is yet to come. I am sure that the M.S program in Chemical Engineering would be invaluable in helping me to achieve my basic objective i.e., a career in research and development and would certainly help me to glorify my name in the field of Chemical Engineering. In addition to being at the forefront of research and technology, the respect US education commands in International arena made it my Mecca for pursuing graduate studies. It will give an added air of respectability and put me at par with other professionals. In my Masters program I would like to lay emphasis on one of the fields amongst Process Design, Modeling & Simulation, Oil and Natural Gas Processing, and Catalysis.

My predilection with Process Design and Modeling & Simulation began with the visits to Chemical Industries, organized by our school. During these trips I have been awed by the importance of good Design in the industry. I find them the most challenging aspects of Chemical Engineering, requiring decisions amidst uncertainty. I realize that it is the best model with good design that would last long; keeping in mind the economic, environmental and other constraints; making these fields of study absolutely vital. As mentioned already, I have undertaken different projects in the fields of Process Design and Modeling & Simulation, which have added to my interests in these fields. On the other hand, Oil and Natural Gas processing is a field with large ongoing research and a specialization in this field would surely improve my job prospectus in Research and Development centers of various oil companies in my home country. Catalysis is also one of the major research fields of chemical engineering. Catalysts are used in almost every chemical industry and are a very important part of the petroleum and natural gas industry.

Nevertheless, I would like to inform you that irrespective of the interests in the above-mentioned fields, I am open to any other field, keeping in mind the vastness of Chemical Engineering and the great research potential each and every of its sub-fields contain.

Populations of several resident seabird species have declined and/or experienced poor reproduction. These include ashy storm-petrel, brown pelican, common murre, marbled and Xantuss murrelets, and least tern. Even with substantial efforts over the past few decades by federal and state agencies to protect seabirds, many populations and breeding colonies have not recovered to historic sizes or distributions, apparently due to a significant extent to massive past impacts and continuing anthropogenic impacts from several sources. Oil pollution, in particular, will occur into the foreseeable future given extensive oil tanker traffic into Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other ports; continued offshore oil production in Southern California; and chronic, illegal discharges by the shipping industry. Restoration projects are needed to reduce the impacts of certain anthropogenic sources on seabird populations. In conjunction with other management actions, restoration projects should allow many seabird populations to better sustain future injuries and to recover over time.




The National Marine Sanctuary Program has become a major partner with the California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service to develop and implement large-scale restoration projects for seabirds in California, using funds from oil spill settlements. The first major seabird restoration project was initiated in 15 and aims to re-establish a former breeding colony of common murres at Devils Slide Rock south of San Francisco. About halfway through its 10-year planned duration, this project has had considerable success towards reaching this aim, with about 75 breeding pairs of common murres in 1. A second project, initiated in 18, involves public acquisition of residual old-growth forest in the Gazos Creek watershed.



Common murres (Uria aalge) nest in the densest colonies of all seabirds. Females lay one egg per season, holding the large pointed egg between their legs. Egg losses are high because of predation and disturbance by eagles and gulls.



The acquired land is used as nesting habitat by threatened marbled murrelets. By effectively managing this property, potential loss of nesting habitat through logging has been prevented, and reduced forest fragmentation and reduced disturbance should lead to reduced nest depredation and increased breeding success in this and neighboring areas. These two projects have helped to restore seabirds in the Gulf of the Farallones, Cordell Bank, and northern Monterey Bay national marine sanctuaries, using funds from the Apex Houston oil spill settlement.

I thought that it might be his parents, they are always arguing with him about everything no matter hoe insignificant the subject may seem. He would always be upset when he would come over and I would try to cheer him up, but instead we would always end up fighting over something. I love him but I couldn’t take his drinking anymore. When he started to drink it didn’t seem to be too much of a problem but now it has taken over his life. He kept on getting more and more distant to the point that he thought that no one cared for him. I tried to be there for him but he just wouldn’t let me. I didn’t know what to do!! (Sarcasticly) A report card. (Mr. J slaps him and Rick is taken back)

You got a C+ in Pre-cal? How do you expect colleges to look at you with grades like this?

Rick

Dad I’m trying. This class is too hard for me, I’m thinking about switching to an easier math class.

Mr. J

Oh no you don’t!! I’ll go figure skating in hell the day my son takes the easy way out. Maybe if it’s so hard maybe you should stop going out at night. Actually that’s perfect your grounded until this C+ is at least a B or higher.

Dad you can’t ground me for that!!

God damn it dad!! I bust my ass at school and just because I get a C+ in pre-cal your going to ground me? I practice all afternoon on my game, then I come home and do my homework. When I’m done with my homework I like to go out and relax alright? I’m going over Michelle’s.

I felt so sorry for Rick. His parents say nothing now but “If we only knew, If we only understood” If this ,or If that. But nothing in the world can bring him back now. Mike….he’s torn up with guilt hating himself saying that it is his fault why Rick is gone. Michelle is seeing a psychiatrist now because she is emotionally unstable and was just recently put on medication to calm her down. She blames herself fully for Rick killing himself. She hates herself for leaving him and will never forgive herself for hurting him. But personally, I feel that if his parents for just one time in his life would treat him like a son and tell him “I love you” or god forbid give him a hug and make him feel wanted maybe he would still be here today.

You know I often tell myself that when something bad happens that it’s one of gods little ways to test our faith. For I have always been taught that when the unfortunate does happen that he would always walk with us no matter how bad things may get.Well I could contradict that, What are the chances of pissing off EVERY single person you come across on a daily basis? I mean I swear that I must have a special talent for this. (Parents freeze) I mean you saw my father, he makes himself out to be some Yale graduate when according to my mother he barely graduated high school. I love my mother but not once when my father got upset did she ever stand up for me. Sometimes I wondered f she ever cared at all. (Parents frozen in light are replaced by Mike and Juli) Mike…we were best friends for along time. But things always had to be his way. I had enough people telling me what to do than to add another so as you can imagine we started to drift apart as friends. Where as Julie is a kind hearted soul whom with whom I wish I got to be closer to. The only reason’s why we were really friends was through Mike. I cannot see anything but jealousy when I see them both because I would give anything to have loving parent’s like they had. The anticipation of a comedy genius was too much for the biggest fan of the situation comedy, ‘The Common Room’. As Ian Rogers, better known as Gary Daniels made his way through the front door and sat down on the large leather couch, his unmistakable smile imprinted on his face, this fan could not contain his excitement, ‘I don’t believe this its Gary, the Muhammad Ali of the Common Room’. Unfortunately, Ian seems vaguely bemused by it. “Yeah definitely me, I grew up in Brixton, London and to be honest it wasn’t a royal palace, if you know what I mean, although my house sometimes had a policeman outside so technically I did have a tad of royalty”. I construed this as a joke but as I had already been the focus of amusement, I declined to laugh. “No seriously, you had to fight everyday, not actually punch someone but you know mentally. The general perception from his role as Gary in the Common Room is that Ian is quite a preposterous and exaggerative person. Lines such as ‘This is a man’s game, not some nancy boy, friendly etiquette, ooohhh I’ll wipe your bum afterwards croquet match’, truly differentiate him from any other characters and due to this Ian has become quite the proverbial ‘household name’ in Brixton. “Whenever I visit Brixo, as I call it, I’m always in a state of constant panic, in case I get mobbed. I remember once, I was walking down the High Street when three women chased me, screaming, and no they were not particularly elegant”.


The preposterous assumption in comparing an actor and his/her character is becoming evermore prevalent in today’s society. The sweeping generalisation that accompanies Ian is the subject of my next question, with which Ian has always been deeply associated. “I knew you would ask that, I am definitely different in comparison with Gary. Obviously, there is a little of his egotistical viewpoints within me but I am definitely not a patronising person. In fact, his patronising approach is purely because Gary feels it is necessary to assert a manipulative influence over various characters. I, on the contrary, recognise my own inadequacies, and therefore I think we are entirely different”.Gary’s swagger is construed by many, as an indication of confidence but ultimately his personality epitomizes someone who is insecure and this reflected by his commandment of language, ‘I am the Muhammad Ali of this shithole although it’s not hard....’ In a way, it is difficult to comprehend Gary. His constant arrogance and self- orientation, questions how he maintains such a close friendship with the five characters. Ian labels Gary as an ‘oxymoron’. “He is a friendly villain,” he states. Many people, myself included see Gary as harmless but ultimately his arrogance conveys an egotistical edge, which if construed wrongly can result in him being characterized as a conceited bully. Ian goes on to elaborate upon what he believes Gary’s most obnoxious attribute is, “It is definitely his inability to listen, to consider others. He gets involved in unnecessary situations and therefore creates an inescapable hole, so to speak.” Gary’s insistence on being correct has much to do with his reputation and therefore he perceives a loss in an argument as a blow to his reputation. It is therefore paramount that he is always correct.


Ian’s newfound celebrity eminence is not only a testament to his self- belief but also to his genuine talent for acting. A loyal fan base is amassing and his impressive performances in ‘The Common Room’ have seen him receive a wide diversity of filming opportunities, one of which he has accepted. “It is called The Mismatch” he chuckles. “It regards an incessantly ridiculed outcast, the applauded Ian Roger’s, who works out to fight a tormenting pupil, Chris Klein. It is a combination of Gladiator and Terminator with a helping of comedy except far better”. Even though Ian is not acclaimed stateside, he maintains that he enjoys the anonymity, “I am able to leave my hotel or house not having to be completely conscious about others, in case I get lynched, although sometimes I wander why people are so obsessed by my acting, it is not as if I have received an Oscar”.


Ian Roger’s complicated viewpoint concerning his own success is somewhat eccentric and totally contrary to the egotistical character that he plays. Sometimes he embraces his accomplished performances by throwing celebratory parties although on other occasions he duly discounts his achievements. His lover, Lora, was sent into the mind of a provincial governor in present day Poland or Prussia around the same time Roy was sent.

He also leaves many cliffhangers, instilling the desire to keep reading. These cliffhangers leave pictures in the readers’ minds that help predict what is to happen next, and about what just happened while reading. For example, when Roy was sending his first letter to Lora, the main aspect to wonder about was how the letter would get to Lora, and if there would be any conflict with the letter being sent between Prince Ram (prince in which Roy is inside of) and other Athilantan (native inhabitants of Atlantis) occupants. A picture is then left at the end of the chapter holding a letter being sent off by Roy. Roy was worrying very much if the letter would reach Lora. The author’s style is unique because this novel is a plenty of journals and diaries from Roy about his thoughts and experiences written to his lover Lora. The title refers to Roys letters to Lora, written after putting the Princes mind to sleep and using his body. Many similes, metaphors, cliffhangers, hooks, and symbols were used throughout the novel. There are many symbols because throughout the work of fiction, Roy compares Atlantis to the modern-time he used to live. For example, the Athilantan calendar symbolizes the modern daytime when it reminds him he lived in it.

The best element of the book was the setting because of the education learned about a historical landmark that not many people know much about, Atlantis. The best parts of the novel were when conversations occurred between Prince Ram and Roy after Roy confessed he is in the Princes mind. Roy confessed because he began to feel lonely and depressed, so he grew a little careless. The Prince soon became aware of Roys presence in his mind based on clues given earlier from Roy, like when Roy talked in Prince Ram’s mind while Prince Ram would be faking his sleep. Roy and Prince Ram would soon have hilarious conversations between each other because they both had no idea what they were saying to each other. Keep in mind that Prince Ram communicates in an ancient Athilantan language, whereas Roy speaks in English. Those were the best parts of the book. Letters From Atlantis was selected to read because of a recommendation from a friend.
