1 Angry Men
Having the power to decide whether a man lives or not, is a great responsibility that you cannot just decide on irrelevant material, but put a lot of thought process into the matter at hand.. This responsibility is taken by twelve men in a trial for murder in the movie Twelve Angry Men. These men are assigned to look at facts and hear witnesses to the murder and then decide if the man is guilty or not. If found guilty, they will punish him with the electric chair. Many of these men, called jurors, all of the jurors but one were convinced that the defendant was guilty, but a single man had the power, persuasion and intelligence to change their way of thinking and finally he made them realize that the man was not guilty at all. We can see that everybody in the jury had a very different way of thinking and a different way to interpret the thing said at the trial. For example juror eight thought that the defendant was guilty at first, but he wasn’t ready to charge a man with murder without looking closely into the facts. Juror 4 in the contrary, he just looked into the facts as they were told. Both of these men were very intelligent, but they had a different ways of seeing things and that is why they had a different opinion on the trial.
Juror four was a stockbroker; he was very wealthy and very intelligent. He always knew how to talk and how to make his opinions very clear. “I don’t see any need for arguing like this. I think we ought to be able to behave like gentlemen”. Juror 4 page 186. He thought of himself as a better person than every body else in the room, this is one of the reasons he was so hard to convince. We can see this since the beginning of the play when every body got into the room and started talking to each other. Juror four just sat down and didn’t talk to anybody. Juror even tried to get a conversation with him asking about the paper and he replied in a superior way when he said that he was looking at the stocks. He showed us the way he thinks about himself when he stated his points (his tone of voice showed his superiority). He had his point and thought that it was the most intelligent thought of all and thought that every body was stupid because they didn’t follow his ideas. He never thought that someone would think more than him and get a better perspective of the scene. He also showed us that he felt superior when he never takes his coat of. The room was very hot and every body took their coats off but he didn’t because it’s a way that he feels more professional and more respectful. He was trying to show that he has no discomfort with it because he always wears a suit and he is used to have it at all times. It was like a way to show his pride and even if he was hot, he wasn’t willing to take it of. Unlike juror 8, he looked himself as an equal to every body; he respected every body’s opinion and put in consideration what others had to say. He was always trying to motivate everybody to give their opinions. He talks with respect to everyone and talks in a simple way. Even though he is also a professional and very well educated like juror 4, he takes of his coat which makes him seem like the rest of the jury. At the beginning, unlike juror 4, he talks to everybody about personal things, we see this when he is at the window and he starts talking to juror 11. He is always socializing no matter who the other person is, even in the bathroom, he talks to two men and even tries to make them make sense of why he is doing what he is doing.
Another aspect of juror 4 is that he just kept thinking that the facts were there and that they determined the guiltiness of the defendant. “If we are going to discuss this case let’s discuss the facts” Juror 4 page 186. We are shown this when he starts saying that the boy said he was at the movies but he couldn’t even remember the movies he went to see. He thought the boy was lying because everyone who goes to a movie has to remember what they had seen and that was a fact for him. He didn’t accept that the boy might have been in shock and couldn’t remember. He stays with this idea about facts until the very end. He had to be convinced with facts. We see this when he says that their was a witness who saw the murder and that was everything he needed to know. The facts about the witness actually being able to see were the facts that made him change his mind, but still the had to be facts in order for him to believe them.
Juror 8 was a man of justice; he was not willing to prosecute a man without analyzing the facts deeply. “I’m not trying to change your mind. It’s just that we are talking of somebody’s life here. I mean, we can’t decide in five minutes. Supposing we’re wrong?” Juror 8 page 184. Although he believed the man was guilty at first, he stated that he hadn’t had a fair trial because he didn’t have a good lawyer. “I kept putting myself in the place of the boy. I would have asked for another lawyer, I think.” Juror 8 page1. He analyzes every fact and gets a possibility out of it and that is how he ends proving his innocence. Through out the whole play he shows his way of looking into the facts. For example when he even went to walk around the place and bought a knife that looked just like the murder weapon. He analyzed that anybody could have that knife no just the boy. Also when he analyzes the testimony of the old man. He ends up making a recreation about it to show that there might have been a chance he couldn’t look well enough to see who the murderer was. Also at the end, with the help of juror , he analyzes the woman’s testimony and ends up proving that the woman couldn’t see well because she didn’t have her eye glasses on.

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Bookstore even at the eleventh hour. The matter is that we posses the greatest base of expert writers. Our staff of freelance writers includes approximately 300 experienced writers are at your disposal all year round. They are striving to provide the best ever services to the most desperate students that have already lost the hope for academic success. We offer the range of the most widely required, however, not recommended for college use papers. It is advisable to use our examples like Bookstore in learning at public-education level. All bookstores offer a variety of publications, which include art, entertainment, fiction, health, history, sports, travel, and etc. However, not all of these bookstores are exactly the same. Some offers good services with comfortable reading areas. Some offers special interests for consumers. In this paper, I compare and analyze one chain bookstore, Chapters, with one independent secondhand bookstore, Macleod¡¦s Books. I also discuss the physical aspects, the Canadian sections, and cooking categories from both bookstores. Lastly, I compare the top five bestsellers between Chapters and a local grocery store since there are no top five bestsellers in Macleod¡¦s Books.
I visited Chapters and Macleod¡¦s Books on October 6th, 00. Chapters is located on the intersection of Broadway and Granville in Vancouver urban area. It is flanked by restaurants, retail outlets, clubs, and coffee shops. Chapters attracts more customers by convenient transportation because there is a bus stop in front of the store. From the outside of Chapters, the view inside is impressive and magnificent. Windows go all the way to the floor to illuminate the interior clearly. Cashier and bestsellers are placed with wood tables and bookcases under high ceiling. It does utilize Starbucks in the back of the store with simple tables and soft couches, provides customers a rest area to sit and read. Elevator and escalator along the wall bring customers upstairs. Second floors contain books for different categories. Red tinted wood bookcases line in the order with thousands of publications. Books are classified by genres. The names of each classification hung from the ceiling and make it obvious for people to find each section. Each section is subdivided into subcategories first and the books in each group are alphabetically organized by author¡¦s last name for maximum efficiency when trying to find books. Major sections are fiction, nonfiction, history, cooking, and etc. They are divided into science fiction, fiction and literature, teen fiction, Canadian cooking, Chinese food, Canadian history, Japanese history, and etc. Hard cover books are more common in sections like cooking, history, travel, children¡¦s books, new fiction and nonfiction. Approximately 1/4 of the stock consists of hard cover books. In addition, there is a section especially for music, DVD, magazine, and Halloween commodities for holiday promotion. Chapters also offer good services and advices by online catalog search system and friendly employees. If a book is out of stock, the employees will check other Chapters¡¦ stocks and order for you.
Macleod¡¦s Books, a second hand bookstore, is located on the intersection of Pender and Richard in City Center. There are colleges and office buildings around the bookstore. The store is a little bit far from shopping areas. Therefore, it is not very popular compare to Chapters. The whole bookstore appears really old in its exterior and interior. Windows seem dusty, the door is worn, the tall bookcases and tables are old-fashioned. There are stacks of used books on the floor everywhere, and bookcases are lined very close to each other. Its vintage style gives you a unique feeling like you travel to the past century. Books are divided into sections by genres like poetry, fiction, history, cooking, and etc. Its genres are not as many as Chapters¡¦. Only big sections like history and fiction are divided into subcategories, for example, Canadian history and other countries¡¦ history. Books in each subcategory are organized by author¡¦s last name from A to Z. Books are not organized by any rules in small sections like cooking and design. According to the employee, Sarah, there are too many used books in the store that it would be impossible to organize them all into detail divisions, especially the store only carry one copy for most books. There are no special services like computer catalog, but friendly employees will give advices to customers. Compare with the layout of Chapters, customers have to spend more time on finding books in Macleod¡¦s Books. The hardcover books consist about 1/4 of the stocks, and some of them are collectable ones. If a book is not in stock, most likely the employee can¡¦t order it because their books are not published anymore.
Both Chapters and Macleod¡¦s Books have a Canadiana section. In Chapters, it is located obviously beside Starbucks and the escalator in the first floor. Most books in Canadiana section are displayed with hard covers on special designed shelves. There are different sections, which include local interest, regional features, award winners, local authors, recommended books, cooking and wine. It emphasizes on local interest and regional features for visitors to find out the beauty of our country. According to the employee, Julie, the purpose of Canadiana section is to promote Canadian culture and the books from local authors. Canadiana section in Macleod¡¦s Books emphasizes different books from what Chapters does. Its Canadiana section is located right at the entrance, and it is about 1/ of the stocks. Books are classified into Canadian poetry, Canadian fiction, and Canadian history. Unlike Chapters, Macleod¡¦s Books emphasizes Canadian literatures.
The cooking category in Chapters is quiet a big section, but it only occupies not even half shelf in Macleod¡¦s Books. In Chapters, cooking books are classified into subcategories like Jewish cooking, Indian cooking, Thai cooking, Canadian cooking and etc. Canadian cooking books are all written by Canadian authors and issued by Canadian publishers. About 10% of the cooking books are Canadian books. Most of them are set apart with the others in Canadian cooking, but some are mixed in with others if they specialize in some typical kind of food. For example, one or two Canadian books can also be found in other subcategories like Vegetarian. They are classified in Vegetarian instead of Canadian cooking because it mainly focuses on Vegetarian.

Facts of The Case
Richard Green went to work in 168 as a quality control inspector for Ralee Engineering Company, which manufactures fuselage and wing components for military and civilian aircraft. Some of Ralee’s clients were Boeing and Northrop. Mr. Green went to work as an at-will employee, and, as such could be let go at any time for any reason not otherwise prohibited by law. In 10, after being with the company for twenty-two years, Mr. Green noticed Ralee was beginning to ship parts that had failed inspection. Over the next two years he frequently objected about this practice to supervisory and management personnel. He even went so far as to bring his concerns to the general manager and the company president. His complaints and protests fell on deaf ears. The company continued to ship parts to Boeing that had failed inspection.
In March 11, Ralee decided to shut down its night shift, and let Mr. Green go after twenty-three years of employment. During the lay-off of the night shift employees, Ralee retained the services of other inspectors from that shift with considerably less seniority than Mr. Green had. Mr. Green filed a wrongful termination complaint. He maintained he was fired in retaliation for complaining about the company’s unsafe practice of shipping faulty parts. Mr. Green photocopied inspection reports to provide proof of the ongoing practice. Boeing confirmed Mr. Green’s charges, and terminated its contract with Ralee.
Rules of Law
At-will employment is defined as “if an employee is not under contract, he or she is an at-will employee. An employer can dismiss an at-will employee hired for an indefinite term at any time for any non-discriminatory reason” (www.legal-definitions.com). The California Supreme Court ruled in Tameny v, Atlantic Richfield Co., 7Cal. d 167 (180), that an at-will employee cannot be fired if it violates “fundamental public policy”. Unfortunately, the court did not clearly define “fundamental public policy”. In Gantt v. Sentry Insurance, 1 Cal.4th 108 (1) the court tried to clarify this policy by ruling that “fundamental public policy” must be located within constitutional or a statutory provisions.
Ralee filed a summary judgment motion, maintaining it was entitled to discharge Mr. Green, even if it did so because he complained about the company’s practice of shipping faulty parts. Ralee further maintained that this practice did not violate a public policy located within constitutional or statutory provisions. The trial court agreed that Mr. Green was an at-will employee, whom his employer had every right to fire due to his continued complaining about how they conducted their business. Mr. Green appealed the decision. The California Court of Appeals upheld Mr. Green’s complaint and allowed him to go to trial on his claims. The California Supreme Court ruled that Federal Aviation Act (FAA) regulations provide inspection guidelines to ensure the safety of aircraft components and that those regulations were sufficiently “tethered” to the FAA. The court further reasoned in support of Mr. Green’s claim that “promoting airline safety- the subject of the federal regulations constitutes a policy of sufficient public importance.” By a 5 to vote, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. Green’s claim.
Managerial Prospective
When Mr. Green first brought it to Ralee’s attention that some aircraft components the company was producing were failing inspection, Ralee should have investigated the matter and then taken corrective action if needed. Taking this action would have been the right thing to do for its customers and to ensure the aircraft components met FAA regulations, which affect public safety. Mr. Green had more than twenty years of seniority with the company as a quality control inspector so it stands to reason, he knew what he was doing and his concerns should not have been ignored. By firing Mr. Green for reasons that appeared disingenuous, Ralee took the matter from an internal problem to a public one that had to be resolved by the highest court in the State of California. It cost the company money, time and its reputation.

The book “Animal Farm” is a very famous political allegory written by George Orwell and first published in 145. The characters, setting and plot of Animal Farm are an allegory of the Russian revolution of 117 and the subsequent years of Stalins’ totalitarian regime. In this short novel, the author tells a story where animals are used to characterize human behaviour.
In this essay, I will discuss and explain the role of two chosen characters and also compare their behaviour with the human types they represent.
The book is about the animals of “Manor Farm”, later called Animal Farm, who want their freedom. They rebel against Jones (the owner of the farm) and throw him out. At first Jones tries to get his farm back, but he soon gives up. The animals are so happy, to start with. Then the animals want to adopt a leader. There are only two animals (both pigs) that really want to be leader and they are Snowball and Napoleon. At first they try to work together co-operatively but this does not work. Just one of the animals must be chosen as leader. Snowball was the favourite among the animals to adopt the role of leader partly because of his honesty and kindness. Napoleon frequently lies and cheats and wants to control the other animals. He chases Snowball away with the help of his hand-reared dogs. He then tells the animals that Snowball was a spy and a traitor. All the animals believe his story, but it is not true.
The animals begin their new lives in “Animal Farm” with their new leader Napoleon. At first everyone is happy, but Napoleon is a bad leader and things go downhill for the animals. Napoleon gradually changes the rules so they only benefit him. The animal’s quality of life rapidly deteriorates until it is no better (if not worse) than it was in the days when Jones ruled the farm.
The main characters in this novel are Snowball, who is Napoleon’s enemy and the good pig, Napoleon, who is appointed leader, Squealer, who is Napoleons helper and messenger and Boxer, who is a hardworking and loyal carthorse. Other characters include Clover, who is Boxers lady friend, Benjamin, who is an old and wise donkey and Mollie, who is a very fashion conscious mare.
The two characters I have chosen to write about are Napoleon, the leader and Boxer the carthorse.
Boxer is an extremely loyal character. His loyalty is shown throughout the whole story. When Boxer accepts Napoleon as the leader, he is prepared to follow him without questioning. This is illustrated in one of the mottoes he adopts, which is,
“Napoleon is always right”
Boxers’ deep loyalty and gullibility easily allows him to be deceived. For example, Squealer, instructed by Napoleon, got Boxer to believe that Snowball was Jones’ “secret agent” all along. This is all a bunch of lies but Boxer easily believes them. Whilst loyalty is an admirable quality, the way Boxer blindly follows his leader ends up being quite destructive.
Boxer is by no means the smartest of animals, in-fact he is quite dumb. He only properly knows four letters of the alphabet A, B, C and D.
“Boxer could not get beyond the letter D. He would trace out A, B, C, D in the dust with his great hoof… On several occasions, indeed, he did learn E, F, G, H but by the time he knew them he had forgotten A, B, C, D”
Boxer is dumb but decent and devoted to trying his best. Boxer isn’t the dumbest animal on the farm, if you compare him to the sheep he’s quite smart.
The fact that Boxer is loyal but not very bright proves to be a dangerous combination. It is easy for Napoleon to take advantage of him.
Boxer is very hardworking; his answer to every set back was…
“I will work harder” Boxer adopted this saying as his personal motto. Boxer enjoys working very much, partly because he was very good at it. Boxer’s strength makes work easier for him. Boxer is huge, compared with most of the other animals.
The size and strength of Boxer was colossal. His huge muscles and sheer strength made Boxer the natural choice to do all the tough work.
“Nothing could have been achieved without Boxer, whose strength seemed equal to that of all of the rest of the animals put together.”
Boxer’s power benefited all the animals, as this quote shows;
“[They got] everything done quicker with Boxer on their side.”
Not only was Boxer loyal and a bit dumb but he was also he very strong. So Boxers’ hard work under Napoleons’ leadership was actually used to support a corrupt regime.
Boxer has good relationships with all the animals, in-fact all the animals admire him.
“Boxer was that admiration of everybody.” This is quite true; the animals mainly admired him for his big muscles and power. But others like Benjamin the donkey, admired him for who he is. “Benjamin, nevertheless, without openly admitting it, was attached to Boxer.”
Clover is also devoted to Boxer and in the same way Boxer has a soft spot for Clover.
Both Benjamin and Clover cared for Boxer when he was ill. Boxer thought that hard work was the solution for everything and he nearly worked himself to death.
Boxers’ great power mixed with his devotion and not to mention loving personality encourages the reader to have a soft spot for him. We are very sad when Boxer is hurt. The most heart rendering part of the novel is when Boxer collapses and is sent to the slaughterhouse.
Altogether Boxer is loyal, hardworking, strong, honest and incorruptible, like every person should be, as with most people, there is usually a weakness. In Boxers’ case he is very gullible and he is easily conned into believing lies and obeying rules.
Boxers’ weakness is that he is not very educated, rather dumb and very trusting. It is easy for Napoleon and the other pigs to take advantage of Boxer because of his lack of intelligence and limited education. He is unable to think things through for himself. He has the physical strength of an army and the devotion and loyalty to follow orders and see a task through, yet his power is sadly used for destruction.
In the allegory “Animal Farm”, Boxer, the overworked, incredibly strong, dumb horse represents the common worker in Russia. He is a member of the ignorant working class, who is manipulated and exploited. Boxer can be seen as the victim. He gives his life for the cause, in this case animalism, without realising the corrupt nature of the regime, which he has been working for. Boxers’ character also represents the stereotype of the obedient and courageous soldier who obeys his masters’ every command without questioning it.
Napoleon could not be more different in behaviour from Boxer. He behaves like a fierce dictator who is only interested in his own needs and desires. He constantly changes the rules to suit his selfish purposes. For example, Napoleon changes the commandment “No animal shall drink” to “No animal shall drink in excess” when he wants to justify his own drinking.
Napoleon eventually becomes the new leader of “Manor Farm”, but in order to become leader, Napoleon cheats and makes up lies about his honest rival Snowball. Once Napoleon has control of the farm he wants a life of luxury. He changes all the original rules, which he and Snowball and all the other animals had previously agreed on. The law “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need” breaks down until eventually all seven commandments are replaced with just one which reads. “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”
Napoleon does not speak to the animals directly, but uses Squealer as his messenger. Squealer is a very persuasive and intelligent pig. Sometimes it seems as if it were Squealer who was the brains behind Napoleon as Squealer does all the work of explaining new rules and circumstances. Squealer does a good job as all of the animals accept the various new conditions.
Napoleon is greedy. He is happy to grab more of everything for himself. He and the other pigs, for example, get extra food.
Almost every week, Napoleon announced a new policy. “Napoleon announced that he had decided upon a new policy” These policies, however great they were made out to be (by Squealer & Napoleon), never appeared to make anything better for the animals. In-fact as things got better and better for Napoleon they got worse and worse for the animals. But Napoleon, with the aid of Squealer, convinced them that the conditions were far worse in the days of Jones.
Although Napoleon is greedy, selfish and fierce, he is also clever. How else would he get the animals to believe his every word? He is also clever in the choice of words he uses, as can be seen clearly in the following quote.
“For the time being, certainly, it has been found necessary to make a readjustment of the rations”
Squealer (instructed by Napoleon) always spoke of it as ‘readjustment’, never as reduction. This proves his persuasive capability. Without the aid of Squealer, Napoleon would not have been as successful.
Napoleon was willing to exploit and sacrifice others for his benefits. Here is just one example of this. When he wanted to be leader he chased Snowball away with his dogs. Napoleon, to get everyone to trust him after what he did, made up lies about Snowball being a criminal and traitor. He said
“Snowball, who, as we know, was no better than a criminal?”
Here Napoleon uses yet more persuasive language, influencing the other animals by using convincing phrases such as ‘as we know’, unconsciously forcing them to believe that his statement was the general view and not just his opinion.
Napoleon yet again makes the animals think less respectfully towards Snowball, by claiming Snowballs’ helpfulness was mush exaggerated.
“And as for the ‘Battle of Cowshed’ (a battle of the animals and humans where Snowball helped save them), I believe the time will come when we shall find out that Snowball’s part in it was much exaggerated.”
Here Napoleon is trying to diminish the importance of Snowballs’ role making him out to be incidental and not the hero, which the other animals remembered him to be.
There are not a lot of good things that can be said about Napoleon.
We have seen with Boxer that his lack of brainpower enabled his good intentions to be misdirected for evil. With Napoleon, he is not simple-minded but clever. Just as stupidity in the wrong hands is dangerous, being clever or smart in the hands of a selfish, egoist dictator like Napoleon is even more dangerous. He has the brains as well as the desire to do evil. Napoleon seems to be so cold-hearted that he doesn’t care for the welfare of the other animals. We see this when he pretends he is sending Boxer to the hospital when in fact he is sending him to his death and is only interested in the money he will get for his dead body.
Napoleon seems to take pleasure in the misery of other animals probably because he likes the feeling of power he has over them.
Napoleon always uses rhetorical questions, when he is in any doubt or when he thinks some of the animals don’t agree with what he is saying. Napoleon and Squealers favourite rhetorical question is
“Surely comrades, none of you want to see Jones back?” Of course once again that question was unanswerable.
Overall Napoleon was, fierce, power-mad, selfish, sinister, deceptive, dangerous and always willing to exploit and sacrifice others to benefit himself.
Napoleon is the mad, dictator pig whom, in the allegory “Animal Farm, represents the Russian leader Joseph Stalin. In fact, Animal Farm was written by Orwell to criticize the totalitarian regime and Stalin’s rule in Russia during and after the 117 revolution.
The satire Animal Farm parodies the struggle between the classes in Russia.
Napoleon could be said to represent the governing body or ruling class and also the upper class. Boxer represents the ruled class or exploited working class. In Napoleons’ brutal, totalitarian rule, the pigs evolve into the capitalists, which they originally despised.

Executive Summary ¡V Founded in 117, Markham Instruments Company manufactured mechanical measurement instruments sold through mail order. During the first decade of its life, the company was organized around the production of these instruments.
In response to increased competition and demand for its products, Markham expanded its sales organization in 14. The market also shifted from mechanical to electrical and electronic measuring devices during this time period. This shift in product attributes required increased scientific skill to engineer the product.
World War II brought an explosion in demand for Markham products. Along with the increased demand came a huge labor requirement to assemble the electronic measuring devices. This era was identified as the start of when the company began to operate in crisis mode.
Along with the explosion in demand and number of employees, came an increase in the number or disputes between Production and other departments. Mr. Roberts and Mr. Finlay feel the increased disputes between the departments are adversely affecting the company¡¦s ability to meet the demands of a changing market and technology.
They survey the key employees to get their feedback on the problem. The key to their success is in using this feedback, along with analysis of management self-concept, to gain insights into what they can do to make the group¡¦s interactions more productive
Core Issues ¡V Following are critical issues that impact the Markham Instrument Company
Change in the External Environment
During Markham¡¦s first decade of operation, the company organized around the production of the mechanical instruments. The company founder was heavily involved in the day-to-day operations of all departments.
In 14, the market shift from mechanical to electrical and electronic measuring devices resulted in the need for increased scientific skill to design the instruments. Organization of the company shifted focus to Sales and Engineering.
There was an explosion of demand and personnel during World War II. An internal management scandal led to the replacement of Production division management with outsiders. This influx of outsiders changed the company. This period is identified as the start Markham¡¦s operational crisis.
¡§Whatever its character or purpose, a group if it is successfully to operate on its environment, needs some division of labor, some system of communications, some leadership and some discipline.¡¨ More simply put, a group needs jobs (activities), communication (interaction) and motives (sentiments) to survive in its environment..
1. A job requires certain activities for successful performance, the nature of which varies according to the particular technology and job design. The jobs (required activities) at Markham had not been reorganized to reflect how each individual plays a part in the production of the more technically oriented equipment.
„ Personnel policies were obsolete.
„ Production work, in general, kept pace with the factory expansion. In Assembly and Fabricating & Finishing, specialization had taken place and jobs are fairly well defined
„h 400 assembly workers - each person responsible for completing one module.
„h 150 machinists - each person operating one type of machine working on lots of parts.
„h Production control ¡V trained on skills needed for job.
„ The design of the product in the early days allowed Production and top management to organize around, and participate heavily in the design and engineering of the mechanical instruments. The electronic product is more technical and the design skills required are more scientific yet many people outside the engineering organization continue to perform engineering activities. The required activities in Engineering & Design should be different for different people and the activities must be organized.
„h Sales / senior management perform changes in designs / methods.
„h Production management and assembly foreman conduct product engineering on a daily basis
„h Production checks Preproduction Engineering¡¦s drawings to ensure they meet production capabilities.
„h Assembly solves layout problems that should be handled by Preproduction Engineering
„h Production finds ways to get things done without informing Engineering.
„h Preproduction Engineering has minimal contact with Production because they have experience in production processes.
„h Constant coordination is needed on changes in schedules and designs to meet the requirements of each department.
„h Finlay states that ¡§Designs find difficulty in production.¡¨
„h It is often required to make changes after design was submitted to Production to meet manufacturing requirements
„h Assembly frequently contacts engineering on parts that don¡¦t function correctly
. The growth in complexity in technical process goes had in hand with an increase in the amount of interaction and the complexity of the interaction pattern.
„ Intradepartmental interactions are unpredictable and information flows are unstructured
„h Sales „Æ Engineering - Sales makes promises on equipment that has not been fully developed leading to problems in Production. Sales is unaware of where the product is in the release cycle.
„h Production „Æ Sales - Production can¡¦t rely on Sales to completely communicate sales contract details.
„h Engineering „Æ Production ¡V Preproduction Engineering has minimal contact with production because they have experience in production processes.
„h Top management, Sales and R&D jointly decide on new methods or changes in existing products to meet changing demand. Production is not included in the planning.
„ The scheme of interaction reveals frequent instances where management bypasses formal channels and goes directly to the responsible individuals. The pyramid of communication has evolved to where junior employees are receiving instruction, are being influenced from managers outside of their department. Employees have multiple masters leading to conflict in instruction
. Early sentiments required at Markham Instruments included support of a family atmosphere along and strong company loyalty. This loyalty also included a tendency for employee to avoid ¡§rocking the apple cart¡¨. Markhamites were expected to foster an environment void of arguments. ¡§For most groups a conflict free climate is not effective. Important issues are not explored and quality of group¡¦s work is sacrificed for the maintenance of friendly and smooth relations.¡¨
„ ¡§Sugar and honey¡¨ methods were expected. People are afraid to make production mad by telling them what to do. Production managers tended to avoid open conflict with each other.
„ In an effort to avoid arguments with other managers, ¡§back door¡¨ interactions with between upper management and lower level workers were not unusual. These instances illustrated by Figure 6, exhibit higher levels of downward influence. Manager points of view tended to dominate.
„h Sales dominates over production.
„h Production frequently dominates over lower levels in engineering.
„h Roberts frequently dominates over middle management in Production.
„h Fellman (Order Coordinator) interacts with Mulcahy and looses more than he wins. He doesn¡¦t think they are very cooperative
„h Bice (Engineer) keeps getting ¡§overridden from above and from Sales.¡¨
Given Sentiments & Emergent Behavior Impact Company Values
Henry Markham exemplified the values of his company ¡V skill, ingenuity, quality work and close personal ties. The early Markhamites supported his values of being friendly and warm. Markham also required that employees be loyal to the company, to put company before own self-interests.
During the 17 shift from Production to Sales and Engineering, the values of skill, ingenuity and close personal ties remained. Even with the shift from mechanical to electronic devices, Production continued informal, internally developed production methods.
The ¡§Victory workers¡¨ and Production management brought in during and after the war did not share these same values of ¡§family spirit¡¨. Trained production specialists also did not like the traditional production methods.
The given sentiments of the new Production management team, specifically the focus on process instead of people, led to behavior which was not only different from, but in actual conflict with, the behaviors expected by Finlay and Roberts. The behaviors of the Production subgroup became increasingly differentiated from the company as a whole.
1. They did not share the Markhamite emphasis on friendly, personal relationships.
„ Ed Greene ¡§went against the family¡¨ and routed out top management that had been involved in collusion and malpractice.
„ Unlike Pop Markham, Greene and his managers did not, in general, circulate with factory workers. Greene¡¦s staff spent time together planning the operations of the department. Due to the size of the department, the managers worked with their foremen who, in turn, spent time with the shop workers. Greene, Browning and Hersey spent more time in their office ¡§with their sleeves rolled up¡¨ working on planning and problems. Their direct reports got out to see the people.
. The new production team also went against the philosophy of internally developed informal methods.
„ Pat Mulcahy educated his people on basics of scheduling, spoilage controls and so on.
„ Alan Browning spent considerable time improving and simplifying workflows.
„ The team focused on systemic production methods and procedures including formalized, written procedures, product schedules, etc.
Other than not embracing the norm of a warm and friendly environment, the norms of the Production subgroup lined up very well with the Markhamite value system.
„ They continuously innovated and improved their processes.
„ They strived to make Markham a better place.
„ Production management, while not treating employees explicitly like family, was very interested in the development of their department.
„h Greene wants ideas from the people, who work with him, not generated at the top and pushed down.
„h Management was given instruction and left to perform, not to be micromanaged.
„h Training was provided.
Feedback Can Help Adjust the External System
One of the most important influences on management policy is the ¡§feedback¡¨ received from the emerging activity, productivity, satisfaction and individual development of members of the group. Feedback, if funneled properly, could continuously modify the external system (to build up the social system as a whole) into something more than the external system they started with.
Feedback, along with observation of a group¡¦s process is important because it helps the manager to understand what is taking place covertly as well as overtly in the group¡¦s behavior. It also provides insights into what a manager can do to make the groups interactions more productive.
Finlay solicits feedback from key company personnel on their perceptions as to where the issues lie. ¡§His understanding of the behavior of the people he works with is important to the quality and effectiveness of these relationships. These relationships, in turn are crucial to his effectiveness as a manager and ultimately to the success of the firm.¡¨
In many cases, the feedback illustrated improved communication between Production and Engineering. It also indicates that improved processes are the result
„h Greene ¡V on the Beta recorder, we had success working with engineering and looking at detailed drawings.
„h Adams (Design) has a lot of interaction with production. ¡§Grey area between Engineering and Production. Very bad situation.¡¨ ¡§able to sit down with Green and purchasing to consult¡K.the bars are beginning to come down.¡¨
In other cases, the feedback illustrated how the organization of the company was impeding progress.
„h Schmidt (Sales Executives) ¡V Green is put in an impossible position of constantly accommodating changes in schedules and designs. Need better recognition of the responsibility of sales towards production.
Finlay Strives for Adequacy
Finlay is a Markhamite, valuing the warmth and friendliness that existed in the early Markham days. As evidenced by Figure 5, he also feels a strong need to be involved, to influence the day-to-day operations of the department.
Finlay takes the feedback from the extensive interview process and comes to the conclusion that the values of the Production department are the issue. Filters in his self-concept prohibit him from seeing the real issues with the interaction among departments.
„h Past experiences with Greene, such as him going against the family, and Greene publicly insulting him
„h Emergent behaviors in the production do not support his idea of the company values
The value changes, emerging from the Production division have disrupted his sense of stability. ¡§The more adequate a person judges himself, the more he will be able to turn a threat into a challenge to look for and accept new ways of seeing himself in the world.¡¨ In Finlay¡¦s case, the threat is intense enough for him to want to eliminate it altogether.
Finlay¡¦s assumption is that people should ¡§get along¡¨. His perception is that the difficulties, acknowledged as broader than one department, originate from the Production department. His feeling is that Ed Greene, as manager of that department, is the responsible for the difficulties.
He cannot assimilate these new values into his personality, nor is he willing to reorganize his values. His behavior, in an effort to maintain his adequacy as a leader, is to reject the source of the ¡§badness¡¨, Ed Greene, from the company.
Conclusions ¡V
1. Redefine roles and responsibilities particularly in the Engineering & Design areas. Meet with upper management to explain how the ambiguity in job definition is impacting communication and productivity.
„ Creation of a product engineering function to create product designs matched to production capabilities
„ Defining processes and required interactions including regular meetings between engineering and production
. Intradepartmental process mapping should be conducted. Mapping of interactions and information flows between Sales, Engineering and Production will lead to further clarification on roles and will identify areas where breakdown in communication occur.
. Implementation of a formal planning process where periodic and formal meetings between all department heads are conducted to understand
„ Market trends
„ Product release cycles
„ Sales forecasts
„ Inventory levels
„ Innovation and continuous improvement best practices
4. Enhance the company values from a focus on ¡§not rocking the apple cart¡¨ to a focus on
„ Working as a team
„ Respecting, trusting, helping one another
„ Open dialogue and feedback to help improve the company.
5. Reestablish more formal channels of interaction. Let all the managers manage their people without constant influence from others. That includes Roberts backing away from micromanaging the activities in Production.
6. Since Ed Greene is out the door, move Pat Mulcahy into the Superintendent role. He has shown the ability to work with the other departments and an understanding of the interrelationships between departments.
7. ¡§Groups cannot function effectively if cohesion is low or if relationships among group members become strained.¡¨ Top management must perform maintenance functions to rebuild damage relationships and to bring harmony back to the group. Regular team building exercises including team meetings would help.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in 180, and died in 184. The actual cause of death is unknown. His obituary in the Baltimore Clipper said that he had died of congestion of the brain. One theory is that he died from Rabies, and another is that he died of an overdose. Alone, by Edgar Allan Poe was written in 180. When interpreting this poem, one would make an analysis about a part of the writer’s life and how he felt about an aspect of his own life. Many of Poe’s poetry is about personal experiences. There is not a hidden and a surface meaning when reading this poem. In the first verse of the poem it is clearly written that Poe has felt different from everyone else since his childhood. He does not see life as others did at that time. Poe seemed to feel an abundance of sadness to the point where even happiness was not an emotion to him, merely a word. It seems as though he found beauty in things that no one else did, and so he felt alone in a world that no one else was a part of; he felt different and misunderstood.
This poem was written when he was a young man, and so this poem could very well be about his adolescence and his not fitting into a society that was very much different from him. The verses “From the torrent, or the fountain, From the red cliff of a mountain, From the sun that round me rolled...,” can be symbolic for the moment when he began to feel rage and anger, but did not know why he felt this way. Red usually represents anger or passion, and torrent is obviously violent. The sun can represent light or burning heat, feelings that one may have when they become angry. Another reason I interpret this verse as emotions of rage and anger because in the last line he writes that while all of this was happening, he saw a cloud take the shape of a demon, when everyone else saw the sky as blue and “heavenly.” Poe knew that he was mentally unstable, but he did not know exactly why.” This poem evokes emotions of sadness and maybe loneliness, depending on the personality of the reader. It might even instill fear of being alone, of not being understood very well by others.
Edgar Allan Poe had a dark, disturbing, and somewhat twisted manner of writing. Some readers and critics consider his writing pessimistic. His writing also has a sense of honesty and sadness to it. Poe was a person who had many troubling experiences throughout his life. It seemed that all the women he loved ended up dying, and they all died from the same disease. Tuberculosis. To add to his misfortune, he was poor, didn’t have a stable job, and was an alcoholic. To escape from his saddened world, Poe drank and wrote short stories or poems with a pessimistic outlook. Having this dark attitude is what made Poe such a great and creative writer. Everything he was feeling he brought out in his work.
In this poem he writes more about life than about love, and incorporates nature a lot. He incorporates water, the sun, mountains, the sky. They can all be symbolic for emotions. Thunder and storm play a significant role in this poem when dealing with emotion. They may represent anger, sadness, sorrow and pain, the lack of clarity. The poem overall is about Poe being alone in the world because he was not how everyone else was “suppose to be. It also may have been a poem he wrote to release some of the emotion that he could not express to human beings verbally because he was already though of as crazy and abnormal. Maybe no one really knew that he felt that way inside and he did not want to let anyone know just exactly who he was. Perhaps he himself did not know exactly who he was, only that he felt anger and sorrow towards a world that everyone else seemed to find beautiful and fulfilling.

Dear Tom Scott & Tom First,
I understand that you want to raise capital in order to expand Nantucket Nectars, but are currently having difficulty trying to decide whether and where to sell part of the company, sell all of the company, take the company public, or operate as a stand alone company. I suggest that it would be best if you sell part of the company to Ocean Spray, and at the same time, negotiate a reasonable contract with Starbucks to carry the Nantucket Nectar Product in all of its stores.
I asked myself many times, ¡°Why is Nantucket Nectars successful?¡± Out of the many factors that contributed to the company¡¯s success, great tasting product and memorable storyline was the most important. While the current market is flooded with many different fruit juices, I believe consumers choose to purchase Nantucket Nectar products mainly for their all natural high quality and the intimate feeling they get when buying the product. Moreover, I feel that the firm has a strong internal culture that allows it to be more innovative, and a corporate value that is very unique. I strongly recommend that you do not lose these two valuable brand personalities, culture, and corporate value as you expand in the future.
In order for Nantucket Nectars to maintain growth without drastically changing, you should definitely continue to run the company while selling part of the company to a firm that has similar values and corporate culture. I believe Ocean Spray will be a good match in this perspective because it has a similar culture, the management is familiar with Nantucket Nectars, and it is privately owned. Also, Ocean Spray being the world¡¯s largest purchaser of non-orange fruit juice, would be able to sufficiently fund Nantucket Nectars expansion, support secured national manufacturing and distribution, and maintain the high quality of the products. Moreover, Ocean Spray¡¯s strong power on the grocery shelves in the Northeast matches Nantucket Nectar¡¯s business perfectly, because Nantucket Nectars was looking forward to market its products through the supermarket channel in which it has a tremendous upside.
However, you should not forget the growth potential the firm has in the mid-west, west, and international market. In order to realize the potential geographic growth opportunities, I advise you to successfully negotiate a reasonable contract with Starbucks to carry Nantucket Nectar products in all of its stores. Starbucks is a fast growing multinational corporation with great market influence and advertising abilities, and will be a great platform to market Nantucket Nectar products not only in areas with potential growth opportunities, but in areas worldwide.

In the article No State Strategy for Trade, author Jock O’Connell elaborates about the possible ramifications of the State of California’s recent decision to abolish the California State World Trade Commission (WTC). Despite the fact that California is one of the worlds foremost economies, with sizeable stakes on what decisions will be made, this month the World Trade Commission will represent California at the negotiating table regarding the reduction in trade barriers in Cancun Mexico. In this article, O’Connell describes the rise and fall of the commission and further offers his interpretation of a possible resolution in the handling of the state’s trade related matters for the future.
According to a report published by the San Francisco based Public Policy Institute of California, the state has different trade interests than other states. California firms rely more heavily on exports than do other United States companies with exports representing 10% of California’s economic output, as compared to 7.6% for the rest of the country. This mix of products ranges from produce, fruits, wines, nuts, and manufacturing of high-technology products. Other parts of the country export items such as soybeans, and raw grains. This output makes California more reliant on the Far East than other parts of the United States.
Despite the heavy trade out of California, Governor Grey Davis signed a budget eliminating the California Technology, Trade, and Commerce Agency, as well as the California Sate World Trade Commission. This cost saving move has been highly criticized leaving people wondering what will be the next step. (O’Connell, 00)
According to O’Connell, for at least a decade no one has really been minding the California store with regards to foreign trade. Beginning in 1, the California State World Trade Commission was absorbed into the California Technology, Trade, and Commerce Agency. After this period O’Connell suggests that the entire commission was in some way a smoke screen; “political operatives whose prime directive in running the trade agency was apparently to smother any original thoughts or policy initiatives that might venture their way.” Essentially, for ten years California has been supporting salaries and the commission has been producing little to no global growth ideas or results. The commission became a public embarrassment over these years as individuals were appointed to the commission with no international trade experience.
While the international trading world has been thrust into ever changing technology with continuous advancement in communication, transportation, global supply chains, and “successive waves of trade liberalization”, California has been operating under the concepts that were established in the 180’s. All of this has been happening while California has continued to have increases in export trade, now representing a $100 billion a year. (O’Connell, 00)
So, with the abolishment of the commission’s that have previously (albeit poorly) represented California’s trade interests, O’Connell suggests a new approach. His approach would be to reconstitute the California State World Trade Commission as an “independent, privately financed commission of bona fide international business people, economic development officials, and trade economists.” This revised commission would hold the responsibility of representing California in ensuring its future and competitiveness in global trade.
Since Haas Automation, Incorporated is both a California based company, and a large export company with approximately 5% of its total revenue volume export based, these recent decisions could have a major impact on the company. Haas exports computer numeric controlled milling machines, as well as replacement parts worldwide. The impact could be tremendous. Haas is currently expanding its international focus. The most recent change was the introduction of the Haas Factory Outlet in China. This expansion will continue into numerous markets in the upcoming years. Haas intends on growing its international market to match the current level of its domestic business. This means Haas current export business is approximately 105 million it is intended to grow by 00% to just over 00 million annually.
One thing of notice from O’Connell’s report, California is not going completely unrepresented as the WTC will keep a watchful eye over California’s trade interests. Likewise the WTC will represent California at the meeting to be held this month in Cancun. The question is does this individual know the impact he or she could have such a large export region?
Another interesting point in O’Connell’s description of recent years is, if there have been virtually no changes in the past decade then the interim is not likely to shutdown California exporting, as business will continue as it has in the past, however a gate keeper is necessary down the road to foster improvements. The idea of having qualified economists representing the state, as well as true business people that have a vested interest seemingly is a great way of making sure the state is represented well as a whole. Who better to make the decisions than those that have to live with the choices?
If O’Connell’s recant is accurate, revamping the export trade commission and reviewing the current situation in California appears to be much needed. From the perspective of someone who works for a California based company that has a significant portion of its overall business conducted through exporting, it is important that this situation gets resolved soon. California is not getting smaller. More exporting will be required and new trade policies, reviews of tariffs, as well as plans for continued growth are an absolute necessity to remain competitive in this ever changing global environment.

Art Morality and Reality
We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Art Morality and Reality even at the eleventh hour. The matter is that we posses the greatest base of expert writers. Our staff of freelance writers includes approximately 300 experienced writers are at your disposal all year round. Art morality and reality is a subject that is touched upon by many people, from different backgrounds, and cultures.
Art in itself is hard to explain and give a clear cut definition to, there have been many lines drawn as to what is and what isn’t art.
Quote “
What constitutes good art and bad art, and how different individual’s opinions can in effect erase the importance of the dictionary definition of art.
Especially when art is under so much scrutiny as to discover its meaning and origins, why it was created, and what the message trying to be conveyed really is.
From a religious point of view, art is something that glorifies God, and makes people more aware of the goodness and powerful loving nature of God. To these religious types, art is simply a means of expressing God and spreading the news, nothing else.
and these works of art are ‘true’ art because of the substance they contain and the pure love beauty and truth that form the lifeblood of the art work itself, no matter which form it takes, sculpture, poems, songs, pictures ect.
It is likened to a poet writing a technically perfect prose but not meaning a single word he has written, this makes the art work false.
Quote “Superficiality in art is the beginning of falsity; and all falsity is fundamentally ugly. When the poet deeply feels and understands what he is trying to represent it becomes beautiful. Beauty thus conceived is fundamentally moral. If it is not moral, it is not true beauty, and any part that is not moral will likewise not be beautiful.”
Here is an example of how an individuals opinion of art and what it really is, can be so different from others opinions and can create friction. The boundaries in art in relation to morality and reality shift and change so dramatically that the ideals one holds on to can be worthless to another and prove irrelevant in the argument of what art ‘can’ and ‘should’ consist of.. There cannot be one standard for what is acceptable to be art and what is not.
If people are to be considered equal in all their differences and diversities then their opinions are to be respected likewise, but having said this, it makes art a touchy subject that has had to be open and free from solid boundaries and lines that restrict movement and creativity. Otherwise it would be closed off to some people who didn’t fit the criteria, such as extremists, and minority groups.
Then there is the issue not only of what art ‘IS’ but what can be included IN art, as well as the meaning behind it all. The issue of nudity has had some controversy because, not only is it considered rude and inappropriate by some, it has been blamed to have lead the way to pornography being accepted in art and resulting in the art becoming evil as it were. Its as though the ‘safe’ and beautiful nudity has made way for the experiments with These issues that are raised due to clashes in arts boundaries also have an effect on society, if the art world, which contains much of the public entertainment scene, is tampered with and allows such morally wrong substances into it, then this in turn will give society the idea that such things are ok.
Gradually over time this can make ‘bad’ things ‘ok’ and it continues until the whole of our society is living in filth. Art certainly has a much greater effect than its given credit.
More questions are raised by art than are answered, and these questions are not all about the art work in question. It’s more to do with what can and cannot be art, how and where we ought to draw the line between art and crap and what’s beautiful and what is not.
If art is really meant to be an enjoyable pastime and means of personal expression, coupled with communication. Then as a society we have lost that view and have turned on art and deformed it into a monstrosity that does more harm and causes more conflict than good.

At the age of 14, I was preparing for the National Table Tennis Championships in England. A working class background meant that finances and equipment for training were scarce. I did not have a table tennis table in the house or the funds to hire a table at the local hall. There was a weekly club practice session on a Sunday night. This was my only opportunity for physical practice. My father, a sports teacher of 0 years suggested that I buy a book and video on stroke play and table tennis in general. The research article I have found highlights some of the benefits of mental practice both in conjunction with or in the absence of physical training.
As my physical training could only by performed on a weekly basis, I needed to make the most of the short time I had. I set up a programme by which I would spend at least one hour per day with my bat in hand and mentally engaging the games I would face in the tournament. I went through the many options within the ,5 & 7 ball attack and the possible returns from these combinations; the returns from each different type of serve; which serve would produce the best options for a winning shot; how to speed up the game; how to slow down the game; how I could beat my opponent before I had played a shot. The book I purchased had a flick book section at the edge of each page. As you read through each section, there was a 150 flick, flick book sequence of the shot/serve/return depending on the section. Going through the shots in the flick book and then visualising myself in the picture allowed me to practice the shots without being at the table or having an opponent.
As my ‘coach’ was not able to be with me during this practise time, I had to be very strict with myself. I had the desire to compete to the best of my abilities at the Nationals and the only way that I saw I could achieve this, with my limited resources, was to be very meticulous in my mental training. I was prepared for anything that might arise at the Nationals. The research article shows that “Mental practice is effective”. As my mental practice was complimenting my weekly physical practice I was receiving the optimum benefits. As I had been playing table tennis for a year by this stage, I felt I was beyond the novice stage. The research shows that the fact that I had reached a minimum standard of proficiency, I was able to gain greater benefits from this mental practice. The fact that I was able to actually see myself in the flick book images was a huge advantage to me. The research shows that by using internal perspective, I was able to gain greater benefits from my time. The time spent rehearsing mentally not only helped me to develop my motor skill acquisition and decision making but the research shows that this practice also helped to reduce my pre-competition anxiety. Looking back I would agree that I had very little anxiety when it came to the competitions. I truly believe that this was due to my mental practice.
Although I had dedicated significantly less time to physical practice in comparison to my opponents, I feel that my time spent during these practices was more productive as I had greater time on task due to my mental practice. The Nationals went well that year, I received a letter in the mail two days later requesting my presence on a National training camp for an under 16 International game with the Home Nations of Scotland, Wales and Ireland and a match with Yugoslavia at the end of the year. .
I believe that this training technique emphasises the adage that ‘knowledge is power‘. I went into the table tennis Nationals with every possible combination of possibilities that may arise. Some of these did arise and I was able to overcome them to win the tournament. By transferring this technique into my other sports I feel that I have been able to achieve success at a greater level than my competitors. As long as my mental training is complimenting my physical training I will continue to use it.

The financial summary provides a statistical summary of the past and complements the company-specific analysis. A financial statement analysis of a company begins with the assumption that the statements are not misleading or fraudulent. Although, with publicly traded stocks, a CPA is required to supervise the statements, firms have flexibility in their use of accounting methods. This may exaggerate or inflate earnings in audited data. The analyst who is studying the historical data aims at preparing an estimate of current earnings power. This is used as a platform for future earnings projections.
An analyst should start with raw material including, the income statement, the balance sheet, the statement of cash flows, and possible footnotes to the data. Then, four primary tools are used for the evaluation of corporate performance. These are, absolute amount change, percentage changes in growth, common size percentage statements, and financial ratios, and should be used over a three-to-five year period.

In Elevating Ourselves, Henry David Thoreau’s journals from his trips up such mountains as Mount Greylock or Saddleback, the Katahdin, Mount Washington and the Catskills are examined and interpreted. When Thoreau lodged in the home of a saw-miller in the Catskills, his profound and interesting writing took place. It was here that he started to refer to things in a more serene and sophisticated manner. While the majority of his writings are peaceful and intelligent, of what we’ve read, I believe this to be a very pivotal point in which his writings came in a much more poet manor than probably intended.
When Thoreau settled to live on the Catskills, he discusses, “the auroral atmosphere” of the mountains around him and how he likens the feeling to Mount Olympus (Huber 5). It is a comparison that takes me by surprise. It is not very often an American writer refers to a place like Greece when describing how it feels in a much more tactless place that is hundreds of miles away. Not to insult the America of Thoreau’s time, but I think it is certainly difficult to know what kind of majesty that he experienced back then which, today, might be all but vanished from the places he visited. In my hike up the Tower Trail, I looked across the hills and valleys only to signs of industry beyond, and I couldn’t help but wonder just how much more breath taking it must have been when it was seen by the first settlers of America. The hardest thing to interpret is whether or not the feeling was accurately described concerning Mount Olympus, because I have not have the pleasure of being there to realistically compare it to the feeling I had during my Tower Trail hike. Also, the fact that he’d choose Mount Olypmus of all the mountains in the world he could refer too intrigues me greatly. Was he comparing himself to an entity of a god-like stature? Or was he simply saying that from up there one becomes so detached from humanity that it’s easy to think outside the traditional realm of the human mind? I would hope and assume the latter of the two.
When Thoreau is invited to tour Europe with Isaac Hecker on foot, he declines and reflects on the invitation in his journal. “…I cannot so decidedly postpone exploring the Farther Indies, which are to be reached you know by other routs and other methods of travel…” (Huber 7). He thinks it worthless and in a way pointless to travel in a place that has been and is still being traveled on. Thoreau thinks that getting away from civilization and living off the land and only with yourself to pull you through the situations is how one really can reflect on one’s self and his problems. I’m not sure if I completely agree with Thoreau here. I think it is still a trying experience to go to a land that one is not very familiar and try and blaze a path in a different since. I know many people that have backpacked around Europe that say it is an experience unlike anything else that they’ve been through, and those same two guys were very experienced hikers. I think the two activities produce very different emotions and results. While I don’t disagree with what Thoreau is saying, “…to live along the road…” is comparable to giving one’s self a safety net, I do disagree with his discussion not to go.
Of these two excerpts, I see that Thoreau has discovered just how liberating nature can be. I don’t necessarily find either one more intriguing than the other, in the sense that I don’t know enough about either instance to know what Thoreau was really thinking. But I do know that neither of these would be evident to me at all if it weren’t for Thoreau’s “Lewis and Clark” type of thinking. He simply could not let things go unnoticed or discovered. And as I read more about him and his travels, the more I wish our country still had undiscovered areas that I myself might be able to go seek out and discover. Thoreau believed this the best way to learn. He thought every college should be located at the foot of a mountain. As he wrote during his hike up Mount Greylock, “It would be no small advantage if every college were thus located at the base of a mountain…” (Huber 1). Had someone said that to me less than a year ago, I might not have thought anything of it, but being here at Quinnipiac has caused me to appreciate the uniqueness of our location and the infinite advantages and opportunities it awards me as well as every other student on the campus. Whether or not one takes advantage of it is up to the individual. I also appreciate that Thoreau doesn’t think it necessary to be an experienced hiker or camper. He thinks everyone can and should enjoy nature. It should not be limited to only those who have been schooled or educated in the matters of the outdoors. I couldn’t agree with him more.
I think what Thoreau is really trying to say through all of his journal writings is that no one should be afraid of the unknown. No one person should allow a fear of something keep them from doing what they enjoy. Discovery can only occur when the concern of what might go wrong so ignored so the individual can move beyond and take that leap of faith. Had Lewis and Clark allowed the fear of what might become of them in the wilderness dictate whether or not they would make the journey across America, there would be a whole lot less America to be proud of right now. Thoreau sees nature as the discovery and test of what any one person is capable of doing. I completely agree with him. “I never came upon any of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking.” Thoreau and Einstein might have not been compared that often before but I see there methods as one in the same.

Organizational Behavior
Organizational Behavior
Abstract
Although believed by some to be a study of common sense, organizational behavior is a topic that is so complex and diverse the definition in its self is a changing one. It applies differently depending on the situation and there for understanding it may be a lifelong process.
Organizational Behavior
Looking at the operational definition of organizational behavior as how it applies to my business and my life, I realize that it very well may be the single most important subject I study while I am here at UoP. By trade at AmSouth Bank, I work with people in two different roles. One, I am a manager making sure that the employee’s needs are met and that they stay motivated and producing. The other is producing myself. In the bank environment, unlike other fields, we are selling non tangible products that our customers will never be able to touch or feel. Therefore, the relationship that the employee must develop with the client is the essential product. If the employee is unhappy or if there is a chance that anything may be wrong, the product is broke. This is the tough part, because in other fields unhappy employees can still produce cars or other materials, but in my world an unhappy employee stops the press.
By understanding the human process and the different aspects that play into every employee’s day, it helps myself to better manage and make my career easier and more efficient. In understanding and defining operational behavior, I notice that in combines a little of everything I have ever learned about management or people and encompasses it into the words “organizational behavior”. I believe that the variables that play into each situation will vary, but the one basic constant being the people. Understanding the role of communicator, leader, role model, friend and supervisor, helps to a large part in coming to terms with ones own very definition of organizational behavior. What I see as true, others in different situations in management see as false. In under normal circumstances this is to be understandable and is the
Organizational Behavior 4
reason there is no right or wrong answer in defining it.
Corporate culture and personal desires I believe are the two biggest variables when it comes to the definition to organizational behavior. From company to company, and person to person, we are always going to have undefinable variables that will alter the outcome of any situation. By continually learning our surroundings and our peers, we as managers become better managers due to our enhanced ability to motivate and retain our employees. Through life long learning of organizational behavior and the intricacies of the subject, it will allow us to define our careers and success in life on the management level.
