All bookstores offer a variety of publications, which include art, entertainment, fiction, health, history, sports, travel, and etc. However, not all of these bookstores are exactly the same. Some offers good services with comfortable reading areas. Some offers special interests for consumers. In this paper, I compare and analyze one chain bookstore, Chapters, with one independent secondhand bookstore, Macleod¡¦s Books. I also discuss the physical aspects, the Canadian sections, and cooking categories from both bookstores. Lastly, I compare the top five bestsellers between Chapters and a local grocery store since there are no top five bestsellers in Macleod¡¦s Books.

I visited Chapters and Macleod¡¦s Books on October 6th, 00. Chapters is located on the intersection of Broadway and Granville in Vancouver urban area. It is flanked by restaurants, retail outlets, clubs, and coffee shops. Chapters attracts more customers by convenient transportation because there is a bus stop in front of the store. From the outside of Chapters, the view inside is impressive and magnificent. Windows go all the way to the floor to illuminate the interior clearly. Cashier and bestsellers are placed with wood tables and bookcases under high ceiling. It does utilize Starbucks in the back of the store with simple tables and soft couches, provides customers a rest area to sit and read. Elevator and escalator along the wall bring customers upstairs. Second floors contain books for different categories. Red tinted wood bookcases line in the order with thousands of publications. Books are classified by genres. The names of each classification hung from the ceiling and make it obvious for people to find each section. Each section is subdivided into subcategories first and the books in each group are alphabetically organized by author¡¦s last name for maximum efficiency when trying to find books. Major sections are fiction, nonfiction, history, cooking, and etc. They are divided into science fiction, fiction and literature, teen fiction, Canadian cooking, Chinese food, Canadian history, Japanese history, and etc. Hard cover books are more common in sections like cooking, history, travel, children¡¦s books, new fiction and nonfiction. Approximately 1/4 of the stock consists of hard cover books. In addition, there is a section especially for music, DVD, magazine, and Halloween commodities for holiday promotion. Chapters also offer good services and advices by online catalog search system and friendly employees. If a book is out of stock, the employees will check other Chapters¡¦ stocks and order for you.

Macleod¡¦s Books, a second hand bookstore, is located on the intersection of Pender and Richard in City Center. There are colleges and office buildings around the bookstore. The store is a little bit far from shopping areas. Therefore, it is not very popular compare to Chapters. The whole bookstore appears really old in its exterior and interior. Windows seem dusty, the door is worn, the tall bookcases and tables are old-fashioned. There are stacks of used books on the floor everywhere, and bookcases are lined very close to each other. Its vintage style gives you a unique feeling like you travel to the past century. Books are divided into sections by genres like poetry, fiction, history, cooking, and etc. Its genres are not as many as Chapters¡¦. Only big sections like history and fiction are divided into subcategories, for example, Canadian history and other countries¡¦ history. Books in each subcategory are organized by author¡¦s last name from A to Z. Books are not organized by any rules in small sections like cooking and design. According to the employee, Sarah, there are too many used books in the store that it would be impossible to organize them all into detail divisions, especially the store only carry one copy for most books. There are no special services like computer catalog, but friendly employees will give advices to customers. Compare with the layout of Chapters, customers have to spend more time on finding books in Macleod¡¦s Books. The hardcover books consist about 1/4 of the stocks, and some of them are collectable ones. If a book is not in stock, most likely the employee can¡¦t order it because their books are not published anymore.

Both Chapters and Macleod¡¦s Books have a Canadiana section. In Chapters, it is located obviously beside Starbucks and the escalator in the first floor. Most books in Canadiana section are displayed with hard covers on special designed shelves. There are different sections, which include local interest, regional features, award winners, local authors, recommended books, cooking and wine. It emphasizes on local interest and regional features for visitors to find out the beauty of our country. According to the employee, Julie, the purpose of Canadiana section is to promote Canadian culture and the books from local authors. Canadiana section in Macleod¡¦s Books emphasizes different books from what Chapters does. Its Canadiana section is located right at the entrance, and it is about 1/ of the stocks. Books are classified into Canadian poetry, Canadian fiction, and Canadian history. Unlike Chapters, Macleod¡¦s Books emphasizes Canadian literatures.

The cooking category in Chapters is quiet a big section, but it only occupies not even half shelf in Macleod¡¦s Books. In Chapters, cooking books are classified into subcategories like Jewish cooking, Indian cooking, Thai cooking, Canadian cooking and etc. Canadian cooking books are all written by Canadian authors and issued by Canadian publishers. About 10% of the cooking books are Canadian books. Most of them are set apart with the others in Canadian cooking, but some are mixed in with others if they specialize in some typical kind of food. For example, one or two Canadian books can also be found in other subcategories like Vegetarian. They are classified in Vegetarian instead of Canadian cooking because it mainly focuses on Vegetarian.

Facts of The Case

Richard Green went to work in 168 as a quality control inspector for Ralee Engineering Company, which manufactures fuselage and wing components for military and civilian aircraft. Some of Ralee’s clients were Boeing and Northrop. Mr. Green went to work as an at-will employee, and, as such could be let go at any time for any reason not otherwise prohibited by law. In 10, after being with the company for twenty-two years, Mr. Green noticed Ralee was beginning to ship parts that had failed inspection. Over the next two years he frequently objected about this practice to supervisory and management personnel. He even went so far as to bring his concerns to the general manager and the company president. His complaints and protests fell on deaf ears. The company continued to ship parts to Boeing that had failed inspection.

In March 11, Ralee decided to shut down its night shift, and let Mr. Green go after twenty-three years of employment. During the lay-off of the night shift employees, Ralee retained the services of other inspectors from that shift with considerably less seniority than Mr. Green had. Mr. Green filed a wrongful termination complaint. He maintained he was fired in retaliation for complaining about the company’s unsafe practice of shipping faulty parts. Mr. Green photocopied inspection reports to provide proof of the ongoing practice. Boeing confirmed Mr. Green’s charges, and terminated its contract with Ralee.

Rules of Law

At-will employment is defined as “if an employee is not under contract, he or she is an at-will employee. An employer can dismiss an at-will employee hired for an indefinite term at any time for any non-discriminatory reason” (www.legal-definitions.com). The California Supreme Court ruled in Tameny v, Atlantic Richfield Co., 7Cal. d 167 (180), that an at-will employee cannot be fired if it violates “fundamental public policy”. Unfortunately, the court did not clearly define “fundamental public policy”. In Gantt v. Sentry Insurance, 1 Cal.4th 108 (1) the court tried to clarify this policy by ruling that “fundamental public policy” must be located within constitutional or a statutory provisions.

Ralee filed a summary judgment motion, maintaining it was entitled to discharge Mr. Green, even if it did so because he complained about the company’s practice of shipping faulty parts. Ralee further maintained that this practice did not violate a public policy located within constitutional or statutory provisions. The trial court agreed that Mr. Green was an at-will employee, whom his employer had every right to fire due to his continued complaining about how they conducted their business. Mr. Green appealed the decision. The California Court of Appeals upheld Mr. Green’s complaint and allowed him to go to trial on his claims. The California Supreme Court ruled that Federal Aviation Act (FAA) regulations provide inspection guidelines to ensure the safety of aircraft components and that those regulations were sufficiently “tethered” to the FAA. The court further reasoned in support of Mr. Green’s claim that “promoting airline safety- the subject of the federal regulations constitutes a policy of sufficient public importance.” By a 5 to vote, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. Green’s claim.

Managerial Prospective

When Mr. Green first brought it to Ralee’s attention that some aircraft components the company was producing were failing inspection, Ralee should have investigated the matter and then taken corrective action if needed. Taking this action would have been the right thing to do for its customers and to ensure the aircraft components met FAA regulations, which affect public safety. Mr. Green had more than twenty years of seniority with the company as a quality control inspector so it stands to reason, he knew what he was doing and his concerns should not have been ignored. By firing Mr. Green for reasons that appeared disingenuous, Ralee took the matter from an internal problem to a public one that had to be resolved by the highest court in the State of California. It cost the company money, time and its reputation.

"A good education is the only path to success"

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like "A good education is the only path to success" even at the eleventh hour. Nowadays, while some people are trying hard to study skills as much as they wish and acquire knowledge as much as they can, some people seem to ignore formal education which is conducted in Educational Institutions. This differentiation is affected by different background of living, social condition, and opinion. This causes some people to think that the only way that can lead them to success is Education, meanwhile the other have different idea that they have others ways could bring them to success.

As we can see in the real society, educated people are usually got more respect and value than uneducated. This is because of most of them often succeed in their performance of daily life such as successful in getting a job, solving problems, doing business, and achieve what they wish. In reality, jobs are the required and wished carriers of most of educated people. The people who want fulfill this wishes, they must study to get knowledge that relate to those jobs. Without knowledge they are not hired. This is one of success of education. For example, if people want to be accountant in private company, if they have no any knowledge of Accounting, they are not employed because they are not satisfied with having no knowledge of accounting.

Solving problems, which can provide them the needed result, is another success of education. When they study, they are educated many solutions and ideas of famous people to use as the background of solving common problems which are usually occurred. In case they meet those problems in the real situation, they can use those backgrounds to deal these problems easily and successfully without taking much time.

Besides these two forms of success, education also provides another success of doing business. Business is required flexible ideas, performances and strong determination with being patient. It can help people to make a huge amount of money with their knowledge and flexibility which they have acquired so far in their education. When they were studying, they could come out with many ideas of how to do business well, how to make a good decision, how to make a lot of money, how to sell product or services increasingly, how to persuade customer… and after got these ideas, it would be easy for them to run their own business or being hired to do for other people. And most of them often got success without failures. Because of these successes, people have an opinion that education is the only path that can bring them to success.

In opposite to the above opinion, some people, even they haven’t got any education, they are also successful in their life as well. Sometimes, some uneducated people can run a business better than educated one because they have much experiences and those of things usually continue from one generation to another. For example, the Chinese people who live in Cambodia, they know how to do business well even they haven’s studied at school at all and they also make a large amount of money amazingly. At last, they want to transfer that business to their next generation to continue. And these next generations don’t need to study at school, what they should do are just listen and observe what their previous generations have been done so far. And most of them usually succeed in those business. That’s why some people don’t agree to Education is the only path to success.

In conclusion, education helps people a lot to achieve their performances of their daily life and it cannot be considered as the only path to success because there is also exception besides education that can lead people to success as well. Otherwise, as a comment, even though education is not the only path to success, but it is the best way that can lead and help people to success. Therefore, people should try their best to study hard and to acquire knowledge as much as they can because it would give them many benefits in the future exactly.

Christianity In Britain

1 Beginning of Christianity in Britain

We cannot know how or when Christianity first reached Britain, but it was certainly well before the 4th century when Christianity was accepted by Constantine (the Roman Emperor). It became firmly established across Britain, both in Roman-controlled areas and beyond, also in the Celtic areas.

In 57 Pope Gregory the Great sent a monk, Augustine, to re-establish Christianity in England. He was very successful in ruling (elite) circles but it was the Celtic Church which brought Christianity to the ordinary people of Britain. The Celtic bishops went from village to village teaching Christianity. As we can see, in the beginning there were two churches already but the Celtic Church retreated and the Roman Church became dominant.

England became Christian very quickly and Saxon kings helped the Church to grow, but the Church also increased the power of kings.

Struggle between Church and state

A long struggle began between Church and state in 1066 when William didn’t want to accept the pope as his feudal Lord. The Church wanted the King to accept its authority over both spiritual and earthly affairs, and the King wanted to gain authority over the Church.

The crisis came when Henry II’s friend Thomas Becket was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 116. Henry hoped that Thomas would help him bring the Church more under his control. But Becket refused and resisted the King. Henry was very angry and four knights went to Canterbury to murder Becket. They killed him in he holiest place in the cathedral, on the altar steps. All Christian Europe was shocked, and Thomas Becket became a saint of the Church. Henry was forced to ask the pope’s forgiveness ((and the pope used the event to take back some of the Church’s privileges)).

Christianity in the villages

However, the Church at local village level was significantly different from the politically powerful organisation. At the time of William I the ordinary village priest could hardly read at all, and he was usually one of the peasant community. His church belonged to the local lord. Almost all priests were married but the Church tried to prevent them from marrying. The attempt was pretty successful. At this time a lot of men and women entered the local monastery or nunnery because it was very difficult during this period to live on the land, and the monasteries were centres of wealth and education.

((The 1th century brought a new movement, the „brotherhood” of friars. These friars were wandering preachers. They were interested not in Church power and splendour, but in the souls of ordinary men and women. They lived with the poor and tried to bring the comfort of Christianity to them. They lived in contrast with the wealth and power of the monasteries and cathedrals, the local centres of the Church.))

4 Threats to the Church

In the 14th century discontent with the Church grew. The greed of the Church was one obvious reason for its unpopularity. The Church was a feudal power, and often treated people with as much cruelty as the nobles did.

Another threat to the Church during the 14th century was the spread of religious writings, which allowed people to pray and think independently of Church control and people felt encouraged to challenge the authority of the Church.

These writings were condemned as heresy . One of the religious leaders was John Wycliffe, an Oxford professor. He believed that everyone should read the Bible in English, so he translated it from Latin, finishing the work in 16. He was not allowed to publish his new Bible in England, and was forced to leave Oxford.

5 The beginning of the Anglican Church

Henry VIII

Until 154 Britain was a Roman Catholic country, but it changed during the reign of King Henry VIII. In 155 Henry decided to divorce his queen, Catherine of Aragon, but the Pope forbade it. Henry was so angry with the Pope that he ended all contact between England and Rome, divorced Catherine of Aragon without the Pope’s permission and married Anne Boleyn.

In 154 the Parliament named Henry head of the Church of England. This was the beginning of the Anglican Church. Henry’s break with Rome was purely political. He did not consider himself as a Protestant, he still believed in the Catholic faith executed Protestants who refused to accept it. He did not approve of the new ideas of Reformation (Martin Luther and John Calvin). So England became a Protestant country, even though the popular religion was still Catholic.

Mary and Elizabeth

In 155 Mary became Queen of England. (She was Henry’s daughter by Catherine of Aragon.) Because she was a Roman Catholic, the country re-entered the Roman Church. While Mary was Queen, many Protestants were burned at the stake for their beliefs. She also put her non-Roman Catholic sister, Elizabeth into prison in the tower of London. (She was the daughter of Henry and Anne Boleyn.) Because of Mary’s cruelty, Roman Catholicism became feared and hated in the country. Many people were glad when Mary died in 1558 and Elizabeth became Queen. Elizabeth also became head of the Anglican Church, like her father, and Roman Catholicism was never again the established (official) religion in England.

6 Puritanism

After Elizabeth became Queen, a group of Protestants wanted to ‘purify’ the Church of England of all Roman Catholic influence. These people were called Puritans - they were the English Protestants. They dressed very simply and believed that all pleasures, such as fine clothes and the theatre, were wicked. Under the rule of James I and Charles I the Puritans were often put in prison and sometimes even killed. Some of them decided to leave England to find freedom in a new country - in America. The Court was unpopular because it was suspected of being the centre of Roman Catholicism. This religious split between the puritans and the Court was one cause of the outbreak of civil war in 168 ((and the eventual execution of Charles I. Following this, from 164 to 1660, Britain was a republic for a short while.))

7 Nonconformist sects

The influence of Puritanism increased greatly during the 17th century. They persuaded James I to permit a new official („authorised”) translation of the Bible. It was published in 1611. This beautiful translation was a great work of English literature, and it encouraged Bible reading among all those who could read. Some of them understood the Bible in a new and revolutionary way. As a result, a number of new religious groups, or (Nonconformist) sects were formed, among them the two most important the Baptists and the Quakers. Both sects have survived and have had an important effect on the life of the nation. The Quakers became particularly famous for their reforming social work. These sects brought hope to many of the poor and the powerless.

It is interesting that thee revolution in religious thinking was happening at the same time as a revolution in scientific thinking.

18 The years of revolution - Society and religion

In the 18th century, in the time of the industrial revolution a new religious movement came. It was led by John Wesley. He was an Anglican priest, who travelled around the country preaching and teaching. In 178 Wesley had had a mystical experience. „I felt my heart strangely warmed”, he wrote afterwards, „I felt that I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for my salvation; and an assurance was given that he had taken my sins, even mine, and saves me from sin and death.” He travelled on horseback and preached in every village he came to. Very soon others joined in his work. But the Church was nervous of this powerful new movement, which it could not control, and in the end Wesley was forced to leave the Church of England and he started the Methodist Church. He certainly brought many people back to Christianity.

The Methodists were not alone. Other Christians also joined what became known as „the evangelical revival”, which was a return to simple faith based on the Bible. It was almost a reawakening of Puritanism, but this time with a social involvement rather than a political involvement.

There was a small group of Christians who were the first to act against slavery, while another group tried to limit the cruelty of employers who forced children to work long hours. The influence of these 18th-century movements continued.

1 The end of an age - Social and economic improvements

In the 1th century the authority of the Church was weakened. In the country, the village priest no longer had the power he had had a century earlier. Churches were now half empty, because so many people had gone to live in the towns, where they stopped going to church. This remains true today, when under 10 percent are regular churchgoers.

Spotlight Religion today

The Church of England - or the Anglican Church - is still the established church in England, and the British king or queen is still head of the Church.

I haven’t talked about Christianity in Scotland. In Scotland the Presbyterian Church (called the kirk) is the established church and it is completely separate from the Church of England. The Presbyterian Church is based on a strict form of Protestantism. It was taught by the French reformer, Calvin, and was brought to Scotland by John Knox.

Although there is complete religious freedom in Britain today, there is still tension between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland, where religion is still caught up with politics.

With forex reserves piling up rapidly and the rupee strengthening, import tariffs should be cut substantially so that the industry becomes globally competitive. The fact is that in India high tariffs were required by and permitted the existence of various distortions that were introduced by government for a variety of reasons. The problem is even more vexing for tariffs on agricultural products, where our tariffs are more defensive than protective. The high levels of subsidies given to agriculture by developed countries makes us uncompetitive despite our comparative advantage.Tariff reduction in India, must wait upon subsidy reduction by the developed countries if we are not to be suicidal. As far as our balance of payments position is concerned, the favourable conditions obtaining today are simply a reflection of the unacceptably low levels of investment in the economy. Estimates suggest that any reasonable recovery of the growth momentum will put pressure on the balance of payments, and it would therefore be prudent to keep the tariff instrument in a state of readiness. Indias import tariffs must drop sharply to reach Asean levels soon so that industry becomes more competitive There is a lot of pressure on the rupee to appreciate. A combination of less appreciation and more tariff reduction is ideal at this moment. This will help both exporters and importers. The underlying strength of the external sector has been established. It is also very clear now that in order to move to a much higher trajectory of growth, say, 7-8%, we will have to import much more than now and at lower duties. So given the underlying strength of the external sector, the most logical step is to speed up opening up of the economy. Former finance minister Yashwant Sinha had committed to bring down peak tariff to 0% by 004-05. The government must stick to this at the very minimum.Infact there should be an even sharper cut in peak rate to 10% by 006. Lower tariffs will improve competitiveness because users outnumber producers in the economy, even though the former are scattered and unable to present a unified lobbying voice. There should be just one customs tariff rate for both raw material and finished product because this will at once remove all confusion in regard to classification. Often a finished product can be treated as an intermediate and vice versa, creating negative duty protection in many sectors. For instance, import of cars can be treated as an input for a domestic travel or courier service. A single tariff will also at once remove a host of existing anomalies where the raw material duties are higher than those for finished products. The Indian industry is currently facing stiff international competition, both in domestic and export market. The slow process of domestic tax reforms is making many domestic units unviable with the falling tariff barriers and removal of quantitative restrictions. The government should eliminate the cascading effect of taxes on cost of domestic manufacture and remove trade barriers within the country so that Indian industry is not at a disadvantage.

. Again continuing in the same direction ,we know that the total tax incidence of Central and State taxes on goods manufactured in India is very high and generally ranges between 0 to 70 per cent of the cost of production. This high incidence is because of the narrow tax base. Indirect taxes are largely collected from the manufacturing sector. Moreover, even in the case of excise & customs, there are numerous exemptions. High tax incidence restricts demand for tax paid goods and consequently, the industrial growth and employment generation. Thus the following steps could be implemented

a) Moderation in the excise duty rates on manufactured goods & discontinues special excise duty currently on several products.

b) Central Sales tax should be abolished to make India a one common market and remove cascading effect of tax on inter-state transactions. This would enable Indian industry to achieve economy of scale in manufacture and gainfully use technology to reduce their manufacturing & distribution cost.

c) Replace the existing state specific sales-tax structure by integrated national VAT in a shortest possible time frame so that Indian industry can effectively compete in the emerging highly competitive world market.

d) The duty drawback structure should be modified to include sales-tax and other state taxes suffered by the export goods.

e) Service tax should be made full cenvatable to reduce its cascading effect.

f) Ladder system of custom duty structure should be ensured to strengthen Indian industry by keeping the custom duty on all the raw materials at 60% to 70% level fo the duty rate on finished goods in which these are used.

. The integration of world market post establishment of WTO has provided us an opportunity to increase our exports. India, with its large pool of skilled manpower, abundant entrepreneurship, natural resources and lower operating cost, is in an advantageous position to become sourcing hub for manufactured goods. To promote Indian industry as a global hub, we now require conducive fiscal environment and flexible labour laws, which promote investment,. We would recommend the following measures in this connection -

a)The fiscal laws & procedures should be simplified and these should be in consonance with the international law.

b)There should be stability in the tax structure. The tax incidence and implementation should be predictable for business decisions

c)The recent legislation on transfer pricing has created apprehension among foreign investors. The straight jacketed formula under transfer pricing regulation with its irrational concept like arithmetic average, certification of price by separate agencies, rigid documentary requirements and draconian penalties would discourage trans-national companies. The government should recognise that business conditions are dynamic and therefore rigid and inflexible approach to such tax legislation would discourage investment in India.

4. The government has the major responsibility of making Indian industry globally competitive. One of the most suggestive things the government itself can do is to attempt more e-governance to provide a boost to the industry’s economy and competitiveness One of the action points identified for the government is to utilise information technology in all areas of governance in order to improve efficiency, bring about transparency and accountability. Some key departments like the tax department could be in the forefront of implementing e-governance.The government should ensure that it establishes the required infrastructure and evolves the required legal framework .Also it should effectively manage cultural issues that may arise due to adoption of e-governance and finally implement the process of e-procurement for the government. The CII & the government can work jointly to put the Indian industry on a global map. Some of the areas on which it can closely work with the government so that it can boost the reform momentum and enhance the industry’s competiitveness are WTO and global trade issues, enhancing FDI inflows, financial & agricultural sector reforms, passage of important economic legislations, revival of manufacturing sector and simplification of procedures in small and medium enterprise sector.

5. The economic slow down & recessionary conditions in many countries has also affected Indias exports. The Indian exporters now face stiff competition and high currency risk. The slow process of domestic tax reforms have also imparted the cost competitiveness of India industry. The effect of the above factors has led to the deceleration of exports during the current year. This trend is likely to continue unless the Government take urgent measures to promote exports within the framework of IndiaS commitment to WTO. The Indian exporters should be encouraged and reassured on the fiscal implications of thier exports. The export industry is vast and have a direct impact on the Indian industry, thus to raise the level of competitiveness of the Indian industry the export industry should undergo some reforms. The exporters should be allowed to create a currency fluctuation reserve to take care of thier exchange risk out of the profit earned from exports. This would minimise the financial impact of exchange risk. A fixed percentage of each years profit can be transferred to this reserve account, subject to a monetary limit on the aggregate amount of such reserve not exceeding the foreign exchange exposure. The annual contribution to such reserve should be tax deductible at the time of transfer of amount to reserve account,. After a fixed period of, say, 5 or 8 years, such amount transferred to reserve account can be released on payment of tax. The tax deferment will provide financial support to the exporters to meet any foreign exchange risks, which may arise and improve their margins to some extent. AT the same time, the government will get its tax revenue, though after a specified period. A similar incentive mechanism was operating earlier for investment in plant & machinery as Development Reserve. Since the above export incentive only allow deferment of tax, it cannot be treated as a tax subside under WTO agreements and therefore it is WTO compatible. The impediment in the dedicated export unit u/s 10A(0 &10B() should be removed. This provision make an export unit disqualify export incentive given under these respective section if there is a merger, de-merger or transfer of such unit, In the case of domestic manufacturing unit eligible for similar incentive u/s 80-IB, there is no such hassles or disqualification. The harsh provision of the present guidelines under the Transfer Pricing regulations should be modified alteast for export business such as arithmetic average for determining price, lack of flexibility in the form of internationally accepted range in price comparison, excessive requirement for documentation and harsh penalties for any difference of opinion between the tax department and the assessee including the disallowance of export incentive de-motivate exporters from taking any investment risk for manufacturing in India for global sourcing.India has inherent capability of becoming a manufacturing hub for export to developed countries if favourable fiscal environment is created. It is strongly recommend tat the application of transfer pricing regulations in the case of exports should be deferred for atleast years until the tax department gain adequate experience of administering these new provisions. In the case of export prevision, the cascading effect of domestic taxes should be completely removed including the element of central sales tax, cess on export raw materials like tea, input state taxes etc. The Government should persuade state taxes to zero rate export provision.

6. One of the area of development should be the SSI(small scale industries). This should include special focus on areas such as technology upgradation, infrastructure assistance through cluster approach, timely availability of credit, adoption of modern management practices, use of electronic infrastructure and other IT applications to face the emerging challenges of trade liberalization. The SSI’S should have easier access to credit, availability of collateral free composite loan up to Rs.5 lakh, capital subsidy for technology upgradation and improved infrastructure. The SSIs should make efforts to match prices of domestic products with world prices by adopting waste reducing techniques, making improvements in designs, use of better materials, improved inventory management etc.; innovate/design new products and upgrade product quality to ensure that the consumers are not diverted towards imported products; adopt international/Indian product standards; ensure better package for domestic and export markets; ensure compliance with pre-determined delivery schedules; obtain patents for their products; expand the industrial units vertically by installing modern machinery rather than starting another small unit; explore areas for ancillarisation and develop linkages with other enterprises; restructure management and marketing practices; look for collaborations and tie-ups with foreign firms, which will take care of export marketing through their established channels and provide financial support; and improve productivity of labour.

7. As India is predominantly an agricultural country the agricultural industry and it’s growth is of prime importance in enhancing the competitiveness of Indian industry as a whole.Indian agriculture faces several challenges both internal and external. Ignoring the challenges will be perilous because the livelihood of two-thirds of the population is dependent on agriculture and allied activities.WTO’S trade policy review was marked by pressure on the country to reduce duty such as countervailing and special additional duty on imports. It is clear, there are external forces that challenge Indian agriculture and agribusiness. The intention is to crack open the one billion strong Indian market to highly subsidised foreign goods.Obviously all stakeholders in the country have to guard against India becoming a dumping ground for subsidized agriproducts. What can India do? Given the challenging internal and external environment and considering the fact that the fortunes of three-fourths of the population are directly dependent on our countrys farm-related policies, the need of the day is to strengthen domestic agriculture. India has all the factors of production land, labour, sunshine, water and agro-climatic zones except appropriate policies for an efficient management of resources. Input management is the most critical part that needs serious attention. Quite apart from supply of quality seeds, fertilisers and agro-chemicals, scientific management of scarce water resources deserves the highest priority. Flow of credit and delivery of credit needs special attention. # Budgetary outlay for agriculture related programmes and schemes has been shrinking. Funding for agriculture has to be raised and at the same time, an effective monitoring mechanism to ensure application of funds and value-for-money should be evolved. Rural infrastructure is non-existent. The money being wastefully spent on storage of unconscionable levels of foodgrain stocks as buffer should be better utilised for creating rural assets in the form of warehouses, roads, market yards etc. The private sector should be encouraged to go in for backward integration. Grant of some fiscal and other concessions may not be out of place to induce private investment in farming. Integrating resource poor farmers through contract farming can go a long way in addressing a number of production and marketing related issues. In many of these promotional activities, State governments have to take interest. They have to be pro-active and evolve policies that are friendly to both primary producers and processors. Under the Constitution, agriculture is a State subject. States should become accountable. The above recommended steps will in some or other possible way will boost the agricultural industry and will thus account for the growth and achievement of competitive excellence of Indian industry as a whole. To make this possible there has to be a unified vision and a collective approach so that the Indian industries are on a global map.

8. Apart from looking at recommendations and steps to achieve competitiveness the Indian industry should also focus on the competition from other countries and the study the threats and problems so that a common consensus is achieved for example the threat from Chinese products flooding Indian markets has received much media attention. It has been observed that Chinese imports are in the low tech, undifferentiated and value-for-money category. The Chinese set up world class manufacturing facilities and simultaneously kept labour costs low. Their expertise in large-scale quality manufacturing and high productivity is reflected in some of their products -- TVs and appliances -- closely matching Japanese and Korean companies in quality and price. The skill and productivity of an average industrial worker in China are better than his Indian counterpart because of the experience curve effect and the dedication of the workers. There have been reports of even prisoners being roped in to provide free labour. This results in decreased costs and the prisoner acquires skills enables him to earn a livelihood at the end of serving his sentence. This option though at small extent is a feasible option for India to look upon. Increasing the scale of operation through greenfield or brownfield (M&A) projects or a combination of the two may have to be contemplated speedily. In the latter case, the strategy of the pre- and post-integration process will require delicate handling, as miscarriages in mergers are a common phenomenon. Undoubtedly much attention will have to be directed at reducing waste, improving co-ordination with vendors, reducing the down time of machines, full capacity utilisation and better bargaining with buyers and traders. Simultaneously, it is critical for firms to focus on internal process improvements and improve efficiency, effectiveness and productivity. Each nation has its areas of competitive advantage and the time has come to make a strategic choice. The need is to foster such industries where India has a natural advantage, achievable critical mass of requisite managerial skills and technological capabilities to achieve international standards of design, quality and service parameters. The Chinese challenge is real. Careful reasoning and strategic analysis should determine the competitive advantages of Indian industries for making them internationally competitive.

. Some of the general recommendations to improve the standards of Indian industry would be the emphasis on infrastructure and regulatory reform.Besides,cross-subsidization,especially by private entrepreuners to various sectors have to be stopped. The CII also has some major responsibility to make the Indian industry globally competitive. The CII should set up a national taskforce on capital markets, which would review problems and loopholes in stock and securities markets, examine quality of regulation in SEBI and suggest reforms to bring transparency and investor confidence. The other initiatives in the financial sector would include a study on debt markets, banking reforms and privatization, pension reforms and troubled debt restructuring. The CII, should focus on four other important areas in order to pursue a competitive sustainable growth rate. These, would form the five-pronged action plan of CII and would include ‘‘increasing competitiveness, Focus on bank and capital markets, Governance, privatization and labor and Learning to play the WTO game. On the internal front, the CII should strengthen its corporate advisory services. These involve saving energy costs, TPM, TQM, lean production, QS 000, greening the supply chain, environment audits, and waste minimization. On the external front, CII should focus on detailed firm-level studies on competitiveness to get a clear quantitative fix on barriers, and thereby setting the stage for policy reforms. In addition, CII should also do a competitiveness ranking of states, suggest administrative and legal reforms to foster greater competition, and suggest direct and indirect tax reforms to remove impediments to competition. Indian industry should evolve a new paradigm of competitiveness based on entrepreneurship, innovation, leveraging existing resources, creating new markets and global orientation instead of focusing on problem areas like resource shortage, poor infrastructure and inflexible labour laws, among others. . Indian industry should learn to reduce its debt- equity ratio. With the service sector contributing to 5 per cent growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) and the manufacturing and agriculture sectors contributing each a little more than one per cent, the economy should be able to achieve eight per cent growth.Proffesionals and industrialist should impart CHANGE MANAGEMENT as the most crucial element foe achieving competitive excellence. Priority should be given to public investment in education, including primary and higher education, and the private sector given a bigger role in higher technical education.

Notes

This image shows the random executions of the Spanish citizenry resulted from the fighting in the Puerto del Sol area of Madrid (Also see the Goya painting Second of May). A national uprising in Spain followed, and scenes such as Goyas Third of May were repeated throughout the Spanish countryside, as the French commanders failed to quell the national mood, and instead made it more furious.

Goya had previously admired the practical freedoms the French enlightenment had promised. Most of the Spanish intellectuals of Goyas time were weary of the faltering efforts of Charles IV and Ferdinand to bring reform and improvement to Spain. However, the brutality of Napolean (through his brother Joseph & the military commanders instructed to minimize the fighting there) suspended whatever affection the Spanish liberals had for French freedoms.

For the length of the six-year occupation by the French, Goya lived almost entirely in Madrid. There is much speculation in art books about whether Goya personally witnessed events such as The Second of May, and The Third of May. It is evident that Goya owned property at La Quinta, where the massacres took place, and there is (though disputed by some historians) a story by one of Goyas gardeners, a man named Isidro, who told Antonio Trueba (recorded in his book Madrid por fuera) that Goya witnessed the shootings at Montana del Principe Pio via telescope (a telescope was inventoried as belonging to Goya after his death), and that Isidro accompanied Goya later that night to the place where the corpses were, at which time Goya made notes. This account is referenced in Xavier de Salas book GOYA, published 178 by Mayflower books.

...the Third of May, has become even more famous, haunting the covers of history books, appearing on postage stamps and postcards. It has been used to epitomize the art of Goya, as well as the spirit of Spanish revolutionary heroism. This violent yet moving image depicts the public execution of insurgents on May 1808, the day following the insurrection [see Goyas Second of May] In contrast to the vigour of the street battle, in which the Spaniards appear, momentarily, to be gaining the upper hand, this massacre of civilians, which the French carried out in reprisal for the insurrection, has been painted in the most eye-catching colours. Here, in glowing whites, golds and scarlets against the sombre blacks, greys and browns of the background, the doomed men are immortalized, the street fighters from the Second of May meet their fate. One or two are recognizable the corpse sprawled below the living victims, a prone male figure with matted blood-soaked hair and shattered skull, is identifiable as the hero with the dagger, stabbing the horse in the right-hand foreground of the proceeding picture.

From Sarah Symmons book, Goya,

Phiadon Press, 18. Page 6.

Most of the victims have faces. The killers do not. This is one of the most often-noted aspects of the Third of May, and rightly so with this painting, the modern image of war as anonymous killing is born, and a long tradition of killing as ennobled spectacle comes to its overdue end.

From Robert Hughes book, Goya,

Knopf Books, 00. Page 17.

No other artist in Western civilization can equal Goya in lyricism or power. He just may be the most courageous painter of all time. This painting condemns organized brutality in a way that stands alone in excellence. This scene of slaughter captures every detail of a group of gleeful hateful men destroying their fellow men. Nothing else in all of art equals the violence, the black terror of the moment, with those guns pointed at the group of unarmed victims. This is a difficult painting to look at for extended periods of time and may even cause nightmares.

The Shootings of the Third of May, 1808 (1814) by Spanish painter Francisco Goya (Prado, Madrid). When Napoleon occupied Spain, Goyas bitter disillusionment with the French Revolution was reflected in such dramatic works as this, which commemorates the execution of a group of Madrid citizens. Spanish painter and engraver. One of the major figures of European art, Goya depicted all aspects of Spanish life portraits, including those of the royal family, religious works, scenes of war and of everyday life. Towards the end of his life, he created strange, nightmarish works, the Black Paintings, with such horrific images as Saturn Devouring One of His Sons (c. 18 Prado, Madrid). His series of etchings include The Disasters of War (181014), depicting the horrors of the French invasion of Spain.

Goya was born in Aragn. After studying in Italy, he returned to Spain and was employed on a number of paintings for the royal tapestry factory as well as numerous portraits. In 178 he was appointed court painter to Charles IV. The eroticism of his Naked Maja and Clothed Maja (c. 180005 Prado, Madrid) caused such outrage that he was questioned by the Inquisition. The Shootings of May rd 1808 (1814 Prado, Madrid), painted for Ferdinand VII, is passionate in its condemnation of the inhumanity of war. Technically, Goya attained brilliant effects by thin painting over a red earth ground. Much influenced by Rembrandt (Rembrandt, Velzquez, and Nature were, he said, his guides), he turned in later years to a dusky near-monochrome. His skill, however, seemed to increase with age, and the Milkmaid of Bordeaux, one of his last paintings, shows him using colour with great freedom.

I specifically like this painting, May Third, because of its realism and its portrayal of how evil our human race really is. The background is solemn and does not attract attention to itself- besides giving a setting to the place of the event. The background is drab and dark and lets you focus on the main focal point, which is the actual shooting. I like the use of color to highlight the main occurrence and the shapes of the bodies either dead or alive. The color can make is so realistic that you feel like you were there. The texture of the cold skin on the dead contrasts with the supple skin on the bodies of the living.

There is a balance between life, death, and the portrayal of more death to come. The emphasis is not placed on the main event of the shooting and the dead bodies and blood, but more on the emotions of the people who see their fate and lives clearly flashing before their eyes. Your eyes follow the movement in the painting from the faceless soldiers to the face of the man in the shape of the Christ and clothed in white- and about to die. I like the contrast of the white shirt on the rebel to the dark background and drab clothing of the soldiers and the men around them. Even the blood has been dulled to draw focus to the man in the white shirt, awaiting his fate in fear.

At the age of 14, I was preparing for the National Table Tennis Championships in England. A working class background meant that finances and equipment for training were scarce. I did not have a table tennis table in the house or the funds to hire a table at the local hall. There was a weekly club practice session on a Sunday night. This was my only opportunity for physical practice. My father, a sports teacher of 0 years suggested that I buy a book and video on stroke play and table tennis in general. The research article I have found highlights some of the benefits of mental practice both in conjunction with or in the absence of physical training.

As my physical training could only by performed on a weekly basis, I needed to make the most of the short time I had. I set up a programme by which I would spend at least one hour per day with my bat in hand and mentally engaging the games I would face in the tournament. I went through the many options within the ,5 & 7 ball attack and the possible returns from these combinations; the returns from each different type of serve; which serve would produce the best options for a winning shot; how to speed up the game; how to slow down the game; how I could beat my opponent before I had played a shot. The book I purchased had a flick book section at the edge of each page. As you read through each section, there was a 150 flick, flick book sequence of the shot/serve/return depending on the section. Going through the shots in the flick book and then visualising myself in the picture allowed me to practice the shots without being at the table or having an opponent.

As my ‘coach’ was not able to be with me during this practise time, I had to be very strict with myself. I had the desire to compete to the best of my abilities at the Nationals and the only way that I saw I could achieve this, with my limited resources, was to be very meticulous in my mental training. I was prepared for anything that might arise at the Nationals. The research article shows that “Mental practice is effective”. As my mental practice was complimenting my weekly physical practice I was receiving the optimum benefits. As I had been playing table tennis for a year by this stage, I felt I was beyond the novice stage. The research shows that the fact that I had reached a minimum standard of proficiency, I was able to gain greater benefits from this mental practice. The fact that I was able to actually see myself in the flick book images was a huge advantage to me. The research shows that by using internal perspective, I was able to gain greater benefits from my time. The time spent rehearsing mentally not only helped me to develop my motor skill acquisition and decision making but the research shows that this practice also helped to reduce my pre-competition anxiety. Looking back I would agree that I had very little anxiety when it came to the competitions. I truly believe that this was due to my mental practice.

Although I had dedicated significantly less time to physical practice in comparison to my opponents, I feel that my time spent during these practices was more productive as I had greater time on task due to my mental practice. The Nationals went well that year, I received a letter in the mail two days later requesting my presence on a National training camp for an under 16 International game with the Home Nations of Scotland, Wales and Ireland and a match with Yugoslavia at the end of the year. .

I believe that this training technique emphasises the adage that ‘knowledge is power‘. I went into the table tennis Nationals with every possible combination of possibilities that may arise. Some of these did arise and I was able to overcome them to win the tournament. By transferring this technique into my other sports I feel that I have been able to achieve success at a greater level than my competitors. As long as my mental training is complimenting my physical training I will continue to use it.

“THY WILL BE DONE”

Scene 1 (Rick is sitting center stage, hands out of sight, speaking with god in anguish)

Rick

Father I do not understand. I have tried to follow you but I have failed. All I asked was to be like everyone else. Why have you abandoned me?? Father I can’t do this anymore.

Our father who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name,

Thy will be done..(Raises his right hand in which we now see a gun, places it to his head)

MR.J

NOOOOOOOOO!!

(Blackout)(Loud gunshot rings through audience)

(Lights come up on Julie doing homework as we hear a knock on her door)

Julie

Mike what’s up? (Mike stand speechless)

Michael what’s wrong!! Michael YOUR SCARING ME!!

Mike

I should have seen this coming…I should have known

Julie

What should you have known?

Mike

He ended it…He ended everything. (Julie still not understanding)

Julie

Michael just tell me what is going on please…MIKE!! (Grabbing him) MICHAEL HE WHAT!!! TELL ME!!!

Mike

He’s gone! He took his father’s gun and shot himself!! After all we’ve been through. I’m responsible for this. This is all my fault. (They embrace)

Julie

What will we do now?

Mike

Julie has been wonderful to me ever since we started seeing each other about years ago. She means the world to me and I would do anything for her, as I would do for any of my closest friends.(Spotlight on Rick) WHY!! Why did you do this to us? Why couldn’t you come and talk to me!! (Back to the audience) I’m not really sure where we really went wrong. We have been friends forever and I know everything about him and it kills me that I didn’t see this coming. I would have to say looking back that the first sign of anything would have to be the day of our rally for the big basketball game that we had coming up.

Scene

(Lights come up Rick joins Mike walking back from the rally)

Mike

You know I think that rally was the best one that we have had yet.

Rick

You know everyone is going to be at that game. Then after we crush Oakridge it’s off to districts. Nothing can stop us now. (Slap each other five) Is Julie coming tomorrow night?

Mike

(Stopping to tie his shoes)

She better be there I went to everyone of her damn volleyball games and I hate volleyball. Hey man I almost forgot, Julie’s birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks and I want you and Michelle to have dinner with us.

Rick

Where?

Mike

Don’t know I haven’t decided yet. You candles, some soft music, the works and I want both of you there. (Rick pulls a flask out of his bag) Want some? Have a sip.

Mike

No man I thought we had talked about that.

Rick

We did I don’t all the time …Take it easy

Mike

Yeah well you do it a hell of a lot more than you used to.

Rick

Don’t worry about me dude I can take care of myself.

Mike

Do your parents know about this yet?

(Rick laughs)

Rick

Do you think I would still be alive if my parents knew about this. Holy God!

Mike

I’ll take that as a no.

Rick

I thought that my dad was going to kill me when I told him that Michelle and have been sleeping together.

Mike

He knows?

Rick

Oh yeah knows. I had to remind him to breath a couple of times because his face was turning colors but I told him.

Mike

Why did you tell him?

Rick

Well he would have found out one way or the other. My mother walked in on us having sex one afternoon last week. I was hoping that she hasn’t had sex in so long that she would have forgotten what it looks like but that was doubtful. SO I thought it best if I told him myself.

Mike

Good thinking.

Rick

My dad is such a loser. All he ever talks about is him wanting me to be some pro basketball player you know? He used to hit me ALL the time because I supposedly “Asked for it”. I don’t recall ever saying “if you don’t mind would you knock me around the house? I mean if you have a minute?” I’m afraid one day he’s really going to hurt me. He shouldn’t be too upset with my grades this term. I got all A’s and B’s except for one C+ in Pre Calculus. Mike man I don’t know, Lately it’s been so hard to keep my grades up. Pleasing my parent’s would take a miracle from the almighty, nevermind playing basketball. That’s why I resort to a drink to relax me you see? It actually help’s me more than anything else.

Mike

Well I don’t know about that. Just don’t let it control your life alright? (Michelle joins them on stage)

Rick

Trust me alright? Look I have to go, give me a call later on tonight alright man? (Shake hands)

Mike

Cool. I’ll give you a call when I get from Julie’s. Michelle what’s up?

Michelle

Not much what have you been up to?

Mike

Not much where have you been hiding?

Michelle

You know how it is, work, termpapers, nevermind college.

Mike

Damn I hear that. Guy’s I have to run I’ll talk to you guys later alright? (Michelle and Rick walk offstage)(Lights come up as they walk on stage)

Michelle

Rick do you want to come over tonight and watch a movie with me?

Rick

Sure which one?

Michelle

I can’t think of the name, it came out a little while ago with Vin Diesil and someone else I can’t think of. I heard it was really good it will give us a chance to be together for a little while.

Rick

Great. What time should I come over?

Michelle

How about 70?

Rick

What time is it now?

Michelle

It’s about quarter to six.

Rick

Great let me go home and check in with my folks and I’ll be over o.k?

Michelle

Great (Michelle begins her monologue and a light comes up on Rick)

Michelle

I could never tell what was wrong with him I was always afraid to ask. I thought that it might be his parents, they are always arguing with him about everything no matter hoe insignificant the subject may seem. He would always be upset when he would come over and I would try to cheer him up, but instead we would always end up fighting over something. I love him but I couldn’t take his drinking anymore. When he started to drink it didn’t seem to be too much of a problem but now it has taken over his life. He kept on getting more and more distant to the point that he thought that no one cared for him. I tried to be there for him but he just wouldn’t let me. I didn’t know what to do!! I didn’t know what to say!! You don’t know how this feels!! (Pointing to audience) And now he’s gone and it’s all my fault!!

Scene

(In Rick’s home, his father is reading his report card)

Mr. J

(As Rick is leaving) Rick what the hell is this?

Rick

(Sarcasticly) A report card. (Mr. J slaps him and Rick is taken back)

Mr. J

You got a C+ in Pre-cal? How do you expect colleges to look at you with grades like this?

Rick

Dad I’m trying. This class is too hard for me, I’m thinking about switching to an easier math class.

Mr. J

Oh no you don’t!! I’ll go figure skating in hell the day my son takes the easy way out. Maybe if it’s so hard maybe you should stop going out at night. Actually that’s perfect your grounded until this C+ is at least a B or higher.

Rick

Dad you can’t ground me for that!!

Mr. J

Watch me….it’s done.

Rick

God damn it dad!! I bust my ass at school and just because I get a C+ in pre-cal your going to ground me? I practice all afternoon on my game, then I come home and do my homework. When I’m done with my homework I like to go out and relax alright? I’m going over Michelle’s.

Mr. J

You’ll do whatever I damn well tell you to do. I am your father or have you forgotten. You know you can’t expect DUKE or UCLA to look at you when….

Rick

Dad would you stop it? Did it ever occur to you that I may not want to go to college to play basketball??!! NO! You don’t give a damn what I think!! You never did!! Your just so damn stuck on the idea that I’m going to be this all-star basketball player. This is my life and I’m going to do what I damn well feel like doing.

Mr. J

Son why don’t you get some sleep you’ve had a long day. You need to be rested for your big game tomorrow. I remember when used to play ball…

Rick

Dad!! Would you get off my back!! I can’t take this bullshit anymore!! Just because you wasted your life doesn’t mean you can waste mine. Now stay out of my life!!

Mr. J

Rick come back here! I forbid you to leave!! (Rick continues) If you don’t stop I’m gonna…(Grabs Ricks arm)

Rick

Hit me dad go ahead…Will that make you feel like a real man? Huh? Beating on your only son? You don’t scare me anymore (Father slaps him)

(Rick walks offstage)(Mr. J looks at his hands in realization of what he has done

Mr. J

Rick I’m sorry…(But Rick is already gone)

Scene 4

(Next day at school Julie meets Rick in a hallway, Rick looks exhausted)

Julie

Rick are you alright?

Rick

No I’m not. I just studied my ass off for this test. I hate this class. I don’t know what to do anymore. (Mike enters)

Julie

Rick try not to worry things will get better. Things are…

Mike

(Interrupting)

Buddy what’s up? Ready for the big game?

Rick

Yeah I guess so.

Mike

What do you mean you guess so? We are going to tear these guys apart!! First we have to concentrate on…

Julie

(Cutting Mike off) Listen I need to go talk with Mr. Renfield about my project. Rick things will look up soon enough alright…Talk to you guys soon.

Rick

Thanks Julie

Mike

What were we talking about?... Yeah the game…(Noticing that Rick is not paying attention at all) Thank god this disease cleared up fast I don’t know what I was going to tell Julie..(Rick still not looking) Rick what’s up with you?

Rick

Nothin dude I’m fine.

Mike

Rick man you have got to get your head out of the clouds. We have to concentrate on this game, if we lose it’s all over us. I have to run but I’ll pick you up for school tomorrow at about quarter of 7 alright? (Begins to walk offstage left) Alright?

Rick

Yeah yeah of course (Pulls the flask out of the bag and takes a drink)

Scene 5

(Ricks room…There are empty bottles around him, he is unconscious)

Mike

(Knocking but no one answering) Rick buddy are you re….(He stops and see’s rick is out cold) RICK!! Come on don’t do this!! (Picks up a bottle and looks at it) Damn it Rick not now. God please wake up we have a game tonight!! You selfish son of a bitch get up!! (Mike tries to get Rick up but Rick can barely stand) Snap out of it Rick. If you don’t go to school then you can’t play in the game tonight!! Damn it!! I’m getting Michelle and Julie for help I don’t know what to do (Mike walks offstage and the lights go out)

(Julie and Michelle walk in with Mike, Michelle goes directly to Rick)

Michelle

Not again.

Mike

What do you mean again?

Michelle

I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want him to get into trouble. He’s been drinking a lot when things would bother him too much. He’s been getting more and more depressed lately and I don’t know what to do. Sometimes he gets so distant that it scares me.

Mike

You didn’t want to get him in trouble? What the hell do you think this is for him? Would you mind explaining that to me. What the hell is wrong with you michelle!!

Michelle

Mike listen Rick is…

Mike

No!! You listen! Tonight’s game against Oakridge is the most important game of the season! And now thanks to this little bastard here, we’ll probably lose without him!! Not to mention the fact that…

Michelle

IT’S JUST A GAME!!

Mike

IT’S Not JUST A GAME!!!

Julie

Michael calm down!! There’s no need to yell at her for what he did!

Mike

You stay out of this! I will never forgive him for this!! I have always been there for him, if things were that bad why didn’t he come to ME for help?? I have done nothing but make excuses for him lately and I’m sick of it!! Julie let’s go I have to get the coach and see if there is a way around this.

Julie

I’m sorry Michelle I’ll talk to him.

Julie

(Lights come up on Julie)

I felt so sorry for Rick. His parents say nothing now but “If we only knew, If we only understood” If this ,or If that. But nothing in the world can bring him back now. Mike….he’s torn up with guilt hating himself saying that it is his fault why Rick is gone. Michelle is seeing a psychiatrist now because she is emotionally unstable and was just recently put on medication to calm her down. She blames herself fully for Rick killing himself. She hates herself for leaving him and will never forgive herself for hurting him. But personally, I feel that if his parents for just one time in his life would treat him like a son and tell him “I love you” or god forbid give him a hug and make him feel wanted maybe he would still be here today.

(Michelle remains helping Rick get back into the bed. She gets up to leave)

Michelle

Goodbye Rick (Realizing that he cannot hear her)

(Blackout)

Scene 6

(After school the next day Michelle and Julie are walking outside by the school Julie is trying to console Michelle)

Julie

Michelle there’s nothing that you can do about it. All you can do is tell him how you feel and ask him to stop.

Michelle

Don’t you think that I have tried that? He won’t listen to me no matter what I say. He wasn’t conscious at all this morning and I am really getting worried.(Rick enter’s from offstage left as if in a hurry) Rick!! Honey are you alright?? Are you feeling better?? (Mike is entering pre-occupied from stage right)

Rick

Leave me alone!!(Shrugs them off and rushes by)

Julie

Mike he looks horrible go and talk with him.

Mike

To hell with him!

Julie

Michael Damn it. He is your best friend stop this childishness and go talk with him right now!!

Mike

Alright I’ll talk to him!! (Girls exit with Mike)(Curtain opens and we see Rick sitting on a park bench with flask in hand)

Mike

Rick whats happening to you? (No response) Rick? Rick I’m talking to you!!

Rick

Did I ask?

Mike

What the hell is the matter with you?(Grabs Rick’s flask) Can’t you see that this is going to kill you?

Rick

(Furious) When I want your opinion I’ll ask for it!! Don’t you dare pretend to be my friend after what you said to me this morning. Michelle told me everything so you can just hand that back and go and waste your breathe someplace else.

Mike

What so you can drink yourself to death the hell I will!!

Rick

You have no idea what I am going through alright…You just walk one mile in my shoes then maybe….

Mike

I have Rick, Its called responsibility and maybe if you’d stop feeling so gad damn sorry for yourself maybe you’d see that life isn’t so bad. (Michelle enters as Mike holds up the flask) This is not the answer!! Why won’t you let us help you!!

MIKE

Rick!!

Michelle

Mike stop it!

Mike

To hell with you drink yourself to death for all I care. I’m outta here.(Storms off)

Michelle

Mike come back you don’t have to leave (Tries to stop him)

Mike

Whatever …Have fun

Michelle

I can’t take this anymore Rick! Why do you have to hate yourself to the point that you won’t let ….(Rick cuts her off)

Rick

Don’t start I don’t need this. Not from you!!

Michelle

Why are you doing this to yourself?? Why won’t you let me help? Rick Jameson I love you doesn’t that mean anything to you? (No response from Rick as he turns)

Michelle

Fine!! If you don’t want me in your life then I certainly don’t want you in mine!! Take your ring back…Take it!! I don’t know what it is going to take for you to stop feeling so damn sorry for yourself but at this point I don’t care anymore. And don’t even bother calling me because I have nothing to say to you EVER!!

Scene 7

(Rick does this monologue down stage center as characters are mentioned they appear down stage right and left frozen)

Rick

You know I often tell myself that when something bad happens that it’s one of gods little ways to test our faith. For I have always been taught that when the unfortunate does happen that he would always walk with us no matter how bad things may get.Well I could contradict that, What are the chances of pissing off EVERY single person you come across on a daily basis? I mean I swear that I must have a special talent for this. (Parents freeze) I mean you saw my father, he makes himself out to be some Yale graduate when according to my mother he barely graduated high school. I love my mother but not once when my father got upset did she ever stand up for me. Sometimes I wondered f she ever cared at all. (Parents frozen in light are replaced by Mike and Juli) Mike…we were best friends for along time. But things always had to be his way. I had enough people telling me what to do than to add another so as you can imagine we started to drift apart as friends. Where as Julie is a kind hearted soul whom with whom I wish I got to be closer to. The only reason’s why we were really friends was through Mike. I cannot see anything but jealousy when I see them both because I would give anything to have loving parent’s like they had. To have parent’s who love and encourage me wait I know what your thinking..Michelle right? Michelle is an angel with whom I love very much. She doesn’t love me she pities me, I can see it in her eyes. She is the kindest soul that I have ever known and therefore do not deserve her. Father can’t you hear me? Where are you? Have I done so wrong that I have angered you as well? Well if I upset everyone around here this much and cause them to be that miserable I understand what must be done.

(Blackout)

Scene 8

Ms. J

Honey do you know what has been bothering Rick? He seemed a little upset when he came in this afternoon. Besides he’s locked himself in his room for some reason.

Mr. J

He’ll get over it. (Not concerned)

Ms. J

By the way honey I thought your bottom drawer was always locked.

Mr. J

It always is locked why?? (Starting to show interest)

Ms. J

Because I just came from our room and it was open……

Mr. J

My God!! Rick !!

MS. J

Honey what’s wrong?? Honey what’s happening?

(After Ms. J runs offstage you hear Mr. J scream then a gunshot ring out)

(Lights go out as the final progresses to Elton John’s “The Last Song”)

Letters from Atlantis by Robert Silverberg fits into the science-fiction genre category for many reasons. It involves time travel from the future to the past. It also engages “aliens from another domain” that make the book even more scientifically fictitious towards the conclusion of the novel. Letters from Atlantis is a science-fiction novel because it contains “made-up nonsense” words used in almost all other science-fiction stories. However, it is more than just a usual 150-page science-fiction book. The setting, style, and author are important literary elements that make this book extremely spectacular, powerful, and distinctive from other books.

Letters from Atlantis is first set in the late 1st Century. Scientists in the future develop a type of time travel in which the traveler’s consciousness is transferred into the mind of someone actually living in the past- a useful way to observe history first hand. After Roy, the main character of the novel, is sent through this “Time Machine”, he ends up in the ancient land of Atlantis The Lost Empire, around the year 18, 86 B.C., about 0, 000 years before the late 1st Century. Atlantis is speculated to be located in present- day Brittany or Normandy, France. His lover, Lora, was sent into the mind of a provincial governor in present day Poland or Prussia around the same time Roy was sent.

The author, Robert Silverberg, keeps readers interested in the story because of the very figurative descriptions and language of events, characters, and places. He also leaves many cliffhangers, instilling the desire to keep reading. These cliffhangers leave pictures in the readers’ minds that help predict what is to happen next, and about what just happened while reading. For example, when Roy was sending his first letter to Lora, the main aspect to wonder about was how the letter would get to Lora, and if there would be any conflict with the letter being sent between Prince Ram (prince in which Roy is inside of) and other Athilantan (native inhabitants of Atlantis) occupants. A picture is then left at the end of the chapter holding a letter being sent off by Roy. Roy was worrying very much if the letter would reach Lora. The author’s style is unique because this novel is a plenty of journals and diaries from Roy about his thoughts and experiences written to his lover Lora. The title refers to Roys letters to Lora, written after putting the Princes mind to sleep and using his body. Many similes, metaphors, cliffhangers, hooks, and symbols were used throughout the novel. There are many symbols because throughout the work of fiction, Roy compares Atlantis to the modern-time he used to live. For example, the Athilantan calendar symbolizes the modern daytime when it reminds him he lived in it.

The author, Robert Silverberg, wrote Letters from Atlantis because he wanted to place and take readers’ minds approximately 0,000 years back into the age of Atlantis. Silverberg especially wrote this work to aspiring students interested in writing to show them how deep of an imagination everybody has within them. Silverberg mainly wrote this novel to show that if he can write a great book that can put and hang on to readers into a mythical and fantasized place, they could do it too, as long as they put their brain and heart to it. All of this requires hard work. Readers who read this will get ideas of how broad their mind really is and can be. Silverberg had to know many things before writing Letters From Atlantis. He had to research about how life was during the time of Atlantis. Nobody knows for sure how life was back then because Atlantis remains an enigmatic mystery. Silverberg still had to find out through science, history, and textbooks about how life was back then, the type of government (if any), how people acted, how people looked, and the style of communication people had. Silverberg nailed down most of the details of how life was said to be during the era of Atlantis, based on numerous historians and scientists. If a chance were given to talk to Robert Silverberg, an important question to ask him would be where he gets his ideas from and what his ideas are based upon. Nobody could have thought about the ideas he presented in Letters From Atlantis. A lot of the story makes readers continue reading. There is a lot of suspense Silverberg presents throughout the novel. Silverberg had very good details, descriptions, and figurative language. His plot also helped build up suspense. He left behind, at the end of each chapter, a “cliffhanger” that makes readers keep on reading. All of this helps in being “hooked” on to the book.

The three major elements, setting, style, and author, made Letters From Atlantis very powerful. They helped build on the plot and details that capture the reader. The settings created an “up-close-and-personal” feeling. The author taught important lessons to readers one- anybody can be what they want to be as long as they put their mind and heart to it, and two- the greatness of love. The whole story, Letters From Atlantis, was made because of letters written by Roy to be sent to his lover, Lora. Without his love towards her, the story would not be made. The author, Robert Silverberg, presented his style by writing letters and making the whole book a series of letters, instead of having dialogue, making Letters From Atlantis sole from all other books. That style is a very interesting way of story telling. The best element of the book was the setting because of the education learned about a historical landmark that not many people know much about, Atlantis. The best parts of the novel were when conversations occurred between Prince Ram and Roy after Roy confessed he is in the Princes mind. Roy confessed because he began to feel lonely and depressed, so he grew a little careless. The Prince soon became aware of Roys presence in his mind based on clues given earlier from Roy, like when Roy talked in Prince Ram’s mind while Prince Ram would be faking his sleep. Roy and Prince Ram would soon have hilarious conversations between each other because they both had no idea what they were saying to each other. Keep in mind that Prince Ram communicates in an ancient Athilantan language, whereas Roy speaks in English. Those were the best parts of the book. Letters From Atlantis was selected to read because of a recommendation from a friend. After reading about the story and author, this novel immediately sparked an interest that has now turned out to be very beneficial.
