China, a developing country in the Asia-pacific region is labeled as the worldfs seventh largest economy in terms of power and influence and the largest in terms of size- 1% of global population. Under Mao Tse Tungfs communist rule, China attempted to modernize both agriculture and industry in the ggreat leap forwardh in the 150fs. However, the policies implemented proved futile and resulted in pervasive famine and poverty. In the latter period of the 160fs Tungfs successor, Deng Xiao Ping instigated a cluster of fundamental policies designated on integrating China with the global economy and to promote its economic growth and development.
Chinafs experience with the World Bank is extensive. Since joining the bank in 180, China has been the largest single source of long-term foreign capital, acquiring $US.5 billion after 1 for reform purposes.
Furthermore, China had loaned minimal amounts from the IMF and repaid immediately.
In 180 an eopen doorf policy was employed to expose China to foreign trade and investment with Special Economic Zones established in the southern coastal provinces. This policy was successful due to the low tax rates, import duty exemption, far less stringent regulations, and the comparative advantage China has in labour productivity. In this period foreign trade generated $US0 billion, which expanded to $US400 billion in 1. TNCfs such as Phillips operate companies and generate $US5 billion-worth of goods in China each year, but nearly two-thirds of that is exported overseas.
In addition, agricultural reforms were implemented to strengthen economic development. This entailed the removal of the commune system, also referred to as de-collectivisation and the introduction of the Household Responsibility System where the household sector had freedom to organise their own production decisions and distribute surpluses in free markets after the establishment of quotas or plans. In f7 agriculture measured 1% of GDP.
These reforms generated positive economic growth rates for China. World Bank studies concluded that China achieved average growth rates of 8.% between 178 and 15. Further, the IMF Economic Outlook 00 states that Chinafs GDP (adjusted for PPP) has reached $4.5trillion, equivalent to 1% of Gross World Product (GWP).
The growth of Chinafs potential export markets increased due to reduced government intervention and international convergence but at the expense of higher unemployment and structural change in domestic industries. Through a series of further decentralizing effects, current Premier, Zhu Rongji attempts to increase industry efficiency and competitiveness. China was admitted into the WTO at the Doha conference in 001 and raised exportfs by almost 50% during the first half of this year by exporting to the other 14 member nations.
Financial sector reforms corroborated the nationfs drive to entice foreign investment. They began in 1 with a price mechanism established and a new taxation system operating amidst the central and local authorities. The Peoplefs Bank of China was assigned the central bank implementing the monetary policy and a dual exchange rate was established. The capital loan and negotiable securities markets were gradually established after 185 and Chinafs average tariff rate was cut from % to 15% in 000. Banking laws were initiated in 15 and lead to network banking, stock exchanges and a more sophisticated capital market to accommodate savings and investments. In the years after 1, the amount of foreign investment absorbed by China has maintained the honor of No. in the world for five consecutive years, after the USA. Chinafs private bank savings surpass $US840 billion, equivalent to its GDP. Since then, China has maintained a managed float currency.
Chinafs quality of life may be measured via various indicators such as the level of educational attainment, life expectancy at birth, GNP per capita and the number of doctors per 100,000 people. Education reforms such as the gnine-year compulsory schooling systemh, which was implemented to enhance primary, secondary and tertiary education, achieved great results with the average adult literacy rate rising to 8.8% in 1. Life expectancy at birth reached an average 6.8 years with GNP pc averaging $US780. This gave China an overall HDI value of 0.706. To add, during 1-5 there were 115 doctors per 100,000 people. The Chinese have an average quality of life in comparison to Australiafs whopping 0..
Chinafs reform strategies created many environmental consequences. The country is affected by soot, smoke, acid rain and polluted air and water, which are the unintended consequences of globalisation. By 000 China has basically controlled environmental pollution and the worsening of the ecological environment by establishing things such as the ,500 environmental-protection departments.
The distribution of income and wealth for China is imbalanced. For instance, rural residents had a per capita net income of ,10 Yuan in 1 compared to urban residents receiving 5,854 Yuan. This has increased the prominence of relative and absolute poverty. Chinafs current urban unemployment rate measures 10-15%. However, China has promoted the combination of overall social planning with individual accounts and set up at unified insurance system for staff and workers of enterprises. In 1 million retired staff was covered by old-age pension.
Globalisation has presented numerous implications for Chinafs economic policy framework. Chinafs path to global integration relied essentially upon decentralisation of decision- making, a greater role market forces (through initiatives such as exchange rates) and X-led growth. From 16-8 the Chinese government loosened monetary policy eight times to increase investment in capital and consumer spending. Furthermore, it implemented fiscal expansion policy and budgeted for a deficit in 1 to fund necessities such as telecommunications, transportation and infrastructure. This budget deficit cost the Chinese government a total of $160billion renminbi in treasury bonds.
So, it is obviously illustrated that China has embraced the notion of globalisation and coincide with the continuously changing demands associated. It is successfully reforming its economy even in the present day today and is envisaging positive outcomes for the future. Through its reforming process it has experienced both the benefits and drawbacks of globalisation. From recent trends, it appears highly likely for China to continue growing at such as miraculous rate, competing close to the U.S and ultimately, embracing the global economy.

Facts of The Case
Richard Green went to work in 168 as a quality control inspector for Ralee Engineering Company, which manufactures fuselage and wing components for military and civilian aircraft. Some of Ralee’s clients were Boeing and Northrop. Mr. Green went to work as an at-will employee, and, as such could be let go at any time for any reason not otherwise prohibited by law. In 10, after being with the company for twenty-two years, Mr. Green noticed Ralee was beginning to ship parts that had failed inspection. Over the next two years he frequently objected about this practice to supervisory and management personnel. He even went so far as to bring his concerns to the general manager and the company president. His complaints and protests fell on deaf ears. The company continued to ship parts to Boeing that had failed inspection.
In March 11, Ralee decided to shut down its night shift, and let Mr. Green go after twenty-three years of employment. During the lay-off of the night shift employees, Ralee retained the services of other inspectors from that shift with considerably less seniority than Mr. Green had. Mr. Green filed a wrongful termination complaint. He maintained he was fired in retaliation for complaining about the company’s unsafe practice of shipping faulty parts. Mr. Green photocopied inspection reports to provide proof of the ongoing practice. Boeing confirmed Mr. Green’s charges, and terminated its contract with Ralee.
Rules of Law
At-will employment is defined as “if an employee is not under contract, he or she is an at-will employee. An employer can dismiss an at-will employee hired for an indefinite term at any time for any non-discriminatory reason” (www.legal-definitions.com). The California Supreme Court ruled in Tameny v, Atlantic Richfield Co., 7Cal. d 167 (180), that an at-will employee cannot be fired if it violates “fundamental public policy”. Unfortunately, the court did not clearly define “fundamental public policy”. In Gantt v. Sentry Insurance, 1 Cal.4th 108 (1) the court tried to clarify this policy by ruling that “fundamental public policy” must be located within constitutional or a statutory provisions.
Ralee filed a summary judgment motion, maintaining it was entitled to discharge Mr. Green, even if it did so because he complained about the company’s practice of shipping faulty parts. Ralee further maintained that this practice did not violate a public policy located within constitutional or statutory provisions. The trial court agreed that Mr. Green was an at-will employee, whom his employer had every right to fire due to his continued complaining about how they conducted their business. Mr. Green appealed the decision. The California Court of Appeals upheld Mr. Green’s complaint and allowed him to go to trial on his claims. The California Supreme Court ruled that Federal Aviation Act (FAA) regulations provide inspection guidelines to ensure the safety of aircraft components and that those regulations were sufficiently “tethered” to the FAA. The court further reasoned in support of Mr. Green’s claim that “promoting airline safety- the subject of the federal regulations constitutes a policy of sufficient public importance.” By a 5 to vote, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. Green’s claim.
Managerial Prospective
When Mr. Green first brought it to Ralee’s attention that some aircraft components the company was producing were failing inspection, Ralee should have investigated the matter and then taken corrective action if needed. Taking this action would have been the right thing to do for its customers and to ensure the aircraft components met FAA regulations, which affect public safety. Mr. Green had more than twenty years of seniority with the company as a quality control inspector so it stands to reason, he knew what he was doing and his concerns should not have been ignored. By firing Mr. Green for reasons that appeared disingenuous, Ralee took the matter from an internal problem to a public one that had to be resolved by the highest court in the State of California. It cost the company money, time and its reputation.

The original Phillips curve paper covered business cycles from 1861 to 157. Given that this period predates most of the debate between the monetarists and Keynesians as well as the modern era where central bank policy has GDP stabilization as a goal, it is not entirely surprising that fitting the post-157 data has proven more complicated. In fact, the Phillips curve is one of those cases where belief in an economic idea is so appealing that it survives despite contradictory factual evidence. In some views, when the data does not fit a single Phillips curve, that is simply evidence that the curve has shifted. After looking at the data to the left, you can form your own opinion.

That is abolsutely not true.
The short answer yes it is possible and it happens all the time. Growth does not cause inflation. Inflation causes inflationary growth. Increased productivity causes real growth. But since both forms of growth occur simutaneously and are measured as increased demand and higher prices it is difficult for the FED (or anyone else) to distinguish between the two as they happen and sometimes for years to come.
Growth does not cause inflation (in fact growth tends to cure inflation but the wording and mechanism are tricky).
Prices increase for many reasons but not all price increases are inflation. By definition price increases caused by an ¡°excess¡± money supply are inflationary price increases, or as Milton Friedman once put it ¡°all inflation is monetary all the time and everywhere,¡± (that¡¯s an approximate quote).
Inflationary growth Economists measure the economy as the GDP and the GDP is spending. Imagine that you are an engineer and out of every paycheck you put $00 into a money market account (which is where much of the money in checking accounts winds up). Now imagine that an ¡°excess¡± in money market account balances across America causes your bank to lower the interest rate you¡¯re getting. Remember this is a temporary excess and not one that ¡°should¡± have happened. Upset at the lower interest rate you withdraw most of your account and spend the money on a new computer. That increase in demand for computers is repeated all across America driving up the number of computers sold, the number of people working in the computer sales industry and the price of computers. BTW prices are also increasing across a whole spectrum of goods and services in the same fashion and your REAL take-home pay becomes lower as a result. VIOLA ¡°excess¡± money supply caused growth and commensurate price increases inflation.
But since so many people withdrew money from their checking accounts the money supply returned to normal, interest rates are raised again. You regret buying the computer, you certainly don¡¯t buy another one next month, prices drop and unemployment follows. VIOLA a monetary (inflationary) trade cycle. Boom to bust.
Real (non-inflationary) Growth Now imagine that instead, you become a better engineer, or perhaps your company becomes a better company, or taxes are lowered, or perhaps technology improves. Whatever the cause, it is a REAL improvement in your productivity and you get a pay increase. Similar improvements, slowly over time happen throughout the economy. You use your pay increase to buy a computer and so do thousands like you. Now there is new demand for computers, higher prices for computers and more employment in the computer sales

Shakespeare’s Use of Opposites in Othello
Contrast is a principle element in every form of art. Painters use cool colors to push warm ones forward, dark values to accentuate the lighted areas, and soft edges to give focus to the sharp edges. Writers use calm tempos to make the apex of their stories more powerful. In William Shakespeare’s Othello (reprinted in Thomas R. Arp and Laurence Perrine, Literature Structure, Sound, and Sense, 6th ed. [Fort Worth Harcourt, 1] 1060), Shakespeare uses opposites in character, plot, and language for similar purposes.
Desdemona and Emilia serve as opposites to each other. Desdemona is a beautiful young Venetian woman. She has a very sheltered perspective of the world that leads her to fall in love with Othello’s adventurous past. This sheltered view also extends to her perception of most women. In act four, Desdemona reveals her innocence and purity of thought.
In scene two of act four Othello wrongly accuses Desdemona of being a strumpet. Desdemona is so naive to the world that she doesn’t even know what a strumpet is. She replies, “No, as I am a Christian”, and goes on to insist that she will be saved (4..8). She thinks Othello is referring to her religion instead of her chastity.
In scene three of act four, Desdemona underscores her purity of thought in a question to Emilia. She asks, “Dost thou in conscience think tell me, Emilia / that there be women do abuse their husbands / in such gross kind?” (4..5-61). She believes all women to be as chaste as she is and doesn’t think that it is even possible for a woman to do such a thing. Desdemona then asks Emilia, “Wouldn’t thou do such a deed for all the world?” (4..6). Desdemona thinks this is such a horrible act that only “the world” would be proper compensation. This question gives Emilia the chance to reveal a principle difference between her and Desdemona. Emilia replies, “Why, would not you?” (4..6). This conversation shows their misjudgment of each other. Emilia thinks her question is silly because she thinks that cheating on one’s husband is something that any woman would do. Emilia thought Desdemona shared her views and would do the same. Desdemona replies, “No, by this heavenly light!” (4..64) Emilia then says that she would do such things by heavenly light either, but that she would definitely do it in secret. She goes on to say that she would cuckold her husband for his own benefit. Emilia is suggesting that she would do this for her own benefit though, because her notoriety would increase with her husband’s if she could advance his rank. Emilia’s lighthearted view of infidelity juxtaposed with Desdemona’s innocence and purity of thought gives the audience a saintly view of Desdemona.
The structure of this contrast makes the play more interesting and suspenseful. The viewer knows that Othello means to do her harm for the pain she caused him by making a cuckold of him, but it seems impossible that any harm could befall such a character pure in heart as Desdemona.
A smaller character foil can be found in the characters Iago and Roderigo. Roderigo’s stupidity and his inclination to be easily led in mind and action compliment Iago’s cleverness and ability to ensnare the minds and wills of others. In the opening lines of the play, Roderigo tells us that Iago has “had my purse / as if the strings were thine” (1.1.-). Roderigo’s desperate plot to win the affection of Desdemona has blinded his concern for money. He loses all of his money by funding Iago’s attempts to win Desdemona for him. Iago displays his conscious plan at the end of act one saying, “Thus do I ever make my fool my purse” (1..16). His manipulation of Roderigo shows that he is very capable of twisting another’s will for his own benefit.
Roderigo’s character also compliments Iago in the respect that Roderigo wears his heart on his sleeve while Iago’s motives are always hidden from the people he interacts with. Iago outwardly admits to this twice in the first act saying, “I must show out a flag and sign of love, / which indeed but a sign” (1.1.155). He also gives a summary of his character saying, “I am not what I am” (1.1.65). This relationship establishes early on that Iago is anything but honest.
In the same way that Iago said “I am not what I am”, opposites in plot structure are situations that are not what they seem to be. Othello is full of plot antithesis from beginning to end. Shakespeare uses this plot device to increase the drama and suspense in his play, and to evoke a wide spectrum of emotions in his listeners.
The first sign of this device can be seen in act one when Desdemona marries Othello behind her father, Brabantio’s back. Brabantio was deceived by his daughter, Desdemona, thinking she was so calm in nature that she “blushed at herself” (1..6). Upon discovering their marriage, he delivers a line that echoes throughout the play “Fathers, from hence trust not your daughters’ minds / By what you see them act” (1.1.67). This small use of plot antithesis foreshadows Iago’s deceitful plans.
In scene three of act three, Iago turns a harmless situation into a soar in Othello’s mind. Cassio is leaving the scene after taking with Desdemona as Iago and Othello enter the scene. Iago had instructed Cassio to ask Desdemona to speak to Othello on his behalf, yet he immediately insinuates that Cassio was wooing Othello’s wife by suggesting that he had “[stolen] away so guilty-like” (..40). This is the first seed of jealousy that Iago plants in Othello’s mind.
At the beginning of act four Iago sets another jealousy trap for Othello. He tells Othello to hide himself and listen to Cassio confess his affair with Desdemona. In truth, the conversation he overhears is about Cassio’s relationship to Bianca. Iago knows that Cassio “cannot refrain from excess laughter” when he speaks about Bianca, and he uses this to mold Othello’s jealous thoughts (4.1.6-7). Othello eavesdrops on the conversation and interprets it as solid evidence that his wife is having an affair. The audience knows that he is misinterpreting the conversation, and as they watch the event unfold they are made to feel like direct witnesses to Iago’s scheme. The impact of experiencing Iago’s knavery first hand, after he explains to the audience how he plans to ensnare his victims, makes the audience feel like they too are Iago’s victims, being “led by the nose as asses are” (1..77).
The handkerchief ordeal is another use of opposites in the play. Desdemona thinks she has lost her handkerchief and Othello thinks that she has given it to Cassio. In truth, Iago had his wife steal it so that he could use it to weave his web of deception.
Shakespeare also uses opposites in language, through oxymorons, in this play. These combinations of contradictory or incongruous words linger in the listener’s ear, and cause them to contemplate the circumstances further. Two oxymorns exist in this play. Both of which, are spoken by Othello. In scene two of act five Othello murders his wife in their bed. Doing this he says
What noise is this? Not dead? Not yet quite dead?
I that am cruel am yet merciful,
I would not have thee linger in thy pain. (5..85-86)
To the immediate circumstances he is saying that he doesn’t want to cause her pain in her death, and he aims to end her life quickly. But further examination leads to Othello’s truth motives in this murder. By killing Desdemona now, he insures that she has a place in heaven. He still loves her very much at this point, and shows mercy to her soul by allowing her to confess her sins in prayer before she dies. Shakespeare’s use of this oxymoron is a very efficient way of describing the complexities of this murder.
Shakespeare uses another oxymoron as Othello confesses the murder to Lodovico. Othello tells Lodovico that he is “an honorable murderer, if you will. / For naught did [he] in hate, but all in honor” (5..-4). The extreme opposition of the terms, honorable and murderer force the audience to reconsider their judgment of Othello. In Shakespeare’s time it was considered lawful to kill ones wife if she made a cuckold of her husband. Othello is tells Lodovico that his deeds were honorable by law, and he tells the audience that his actions are justified by his wife’s abuse.
Shakespeare’s usage of opposites in language, bind seamlessly with the opposites in characters and plot structure. The contrast of these opposites gives the viewer a point of reference from which to judge the individual parts. Together, they intensify the drama of the play and involve the audience mentally and emotionally.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in 180, and died in 184. The actual cause of death is unknown. His obituary in the Baltimore Clipper said that he had died of congestion of the brain. One theory is that he died from Rabies, and another is that he died of an overdose. Alone, by Edgar Allan Poe was written in 180. When interpreting this poem, one would make an analysis about a part of the writer’s life and how he felt about an aspect of his own life. Many of Poe’s poetry is about personal experiences. There is not a hidden and a surface meaning when reading this poem. In the first verse of the poem it is clearly written that Poe has felt different from everyone else since his childhood. He does not see life as others did at that time. Poe seemed to feel an abundance of sadness to the point where even happiness was not an emotion to him, merely a word. It seems as though he found beauty in things that no one else did, and so he felt alone in a world that no one else was a part of; he felt different and misunderstood.
This poem was written when he was a young man, and so this poem could very well be about his adolescence and his not fitting into a society that was very much different from him. The verses “From the torrent, or the fountain, From the red cliff of a mountain, From the sun that round me rolled...,” can be symbolic for the moment when he began to feel rage and anger, but did not know why he felt this way. Red usually represents anger or passion, and torrent is obviously violent. The sun can represent light or burning heat, feelings that one may have when they become angry. Another reason I interpret this verse as emotions of rage and anger because in the last line he writes that while all of this was happening, he saw a cloud take the shape of a demon, when everyone else saw the sky as blue and “heavenly.” Poe knew that he was mentally unstable, but he did not know exactly why.” This poem evokes emotions of sadness and maybe loneliness, depending on the personality of the reader. It might even instill fear of being alone, of not being understood very well by others.
Edgar Allan Poe had a dark, disturbing, and somewhat twisted manner of writing. Some readers and critics consider his writing pessimistic. His writing also has a sense of honesty and sadness to it. Poe was a person who had many troubling experiences throughout his life. It seemed that all the women he loved ended up dying, and they all died from the same disease. Tuberculosis. To add to his misfortune, he was poor, didn’t have a stable job, and was an alcoholic. To escape from his saddened world, Poe drank and wrote short stories or poems with a pessimistic outlook. Having this dark attitude is what made Poe such a great and creative writer. Everything he was feeling he brought out in his work.
In this poem he writes more about life than about love, and incorporates nature a lot. He incorporates water, the sun, mountains, the sky. They can all be symbolic for emotions. Thunder and storm play a significant role in this poem when dealing with emotion. They may represent anger, sadness, sorrow and pain, the lack of clarity. The poem overall is about Poe being alone in the world because he was not how everyone else was “suppose to be. It also may have been a poem he wrote to release some of the emotion that he could not express to human beings verbally because he was already though of as crazy and abnormal. Maybe no one really knew that he felt that way inside and he did not want to let anyone know just exactly who he was. Perhaps he himself did not know exactly who he was, only that he felt anger and sorrow towards a world that everyone else seemed to find beautiful and fulfilling.

"A Soldiers Home"

“Soldier’s Home” A Classic for Everyone
When I decided to take an introductory course in literature, I had no idea that I knew so little about the subject. Being a student with an interest in psychology, it seemed only natural that I would find the stories, “A Sorrowful Woman,” “Soldier’s Home,” and “Bartleby, the Scrivener” of particular interest. Each of these works contains the same deep meaning, although not readily apparent. All concern the psychology of self-isolation.
Although all three stories share a somewhat common theme, “A Sorrowful Woman” seemed to exhibit a more complex use of symbols. This requires a more experienced reader in order to grasp every hidden meaning. Since my experience studying good literature is currently limited, this lessened my reading enjoyment. I found Ernest Hemingway’s classic “Soldier’s Home” to be the most interesting. Not only did I find the story fascinating, but it also contained just the right combination of simple and complex use of symbolism to make it an excellent learning experience. Hemingway’s style, along with his integration of plot, characters, and setting, can easily be recognized and identified with by amateurs such as I. His combination of third person omniscience and objective point of views gives the novice reader necessary details while allowing them to read between the lines.
Hemingway’s style sets a tone of loneliness and isolation by using short, stark sentences such as, “He did not want to leave Germany. He did not want to come home. Still, he had come home. He sat on the front porch” (154). The author also creates an ironic twist when he uses a setting that typically provides a warm and protective environment, in direct contrast to Krebs’ feelings of isolation. Hemingway’s use of more obvious symbols helps the amateur reader to recognize and appreciate the more subtle qualities of good literature. For instance, when Krebs’ sister Helen calls him Hare, the reader instinctively feels that Krebs is hiding like a scared rabbit from the expectations and attentions of his family and society.
In addition to his unique style, Hemingway utilizes a chronologically arranged plot, which is easier for an amateur critic to follow. He begins his story with an exposition that gives the reader a slight insight to the protagonist’s religious background and hints at his upbringing. It also includes a brief explanation of Krebs’ experience in WWI. The plot then continues through the months following the young soldier’s return from the war, describing his internal struggle with his war experiences and his return to a society and family that cannot understand his self-isolation.
The reader is exposed to the rising action of the plot as he/she is introduced to the secondary characters of the story. Like Krebs, Hemingway gives the mother a round character that reveals some thoughts and emotions as she caters to her son, timidly trying to persuade him to get on with his life. She seems to be the only link to the real world around him and she acts as a messenger for Krebs’ father who never actually makes an appearance in the story. This clever portrayal of the father’s extremely flat character emphasizes the fact that, “His father was noncommittal” (15). Krebs’ younger sister, Helen, is another flat character whose purpose is to expose Krebs’ vulnerable side. The lonely soldier’s attempts at socializing add to his feeling of isolation as he constantly seeks out entertainment that is typically nonsocial. For instance, the narrator tells us that Krebs spends his time, “ . . . walk[ing] downtown to the library to get a book, eating lunch at home, reading on the front porch . . .” (15). In fact, the only activities Krebs likes that may subject him to the presence of others is to play pool.
Throughout the story Krebs’ mother tries to draw him out of his shell, which leads the reader to the turning point when she confronts him about getting on with his life. The climax occurs when Krebs is talking with his mother. She asks him if he loves her and he says no, “ I don’t love anybody” (157). The reader is left with a sense of heartbreak. This sense of sadness is followed by the falling action of the plot when Hemingway reveals Krebs’ decision to leave home. Finally, the reader is led to the conclusion (the denouement) with the realization that Krebs internal conflict has not ended.
During every aspect of the story, Hemingway keeps the reader involved emotionally with his expertly organized plot, subtle (yet recognizable) use of symbols, and his use of characters that any reader can identify with. Not only is “A Soldier’s Home” a pleasant reading experience, it also provides a bit of challenge to the less seasoned reader of literature. Hemingway’s unique use of all these elements creates a more enjoyable reading experience than does “A Sorrowful Woman”.

SUBJECT THE IMPACT OF CHANGE ON THE ORGANISATION
Overview
In response to recent environmental and organisational trends, workplace management within the organisation is undergoing significant change. As a result of this, it has become apparent that a new HR Policy around these issues must be implemented. The organisation needs to consider its strategy to maintain and attract competitive personnel. In light of this, the attached report will outline impacts associated with the new trends, and outline an ongoing HR policy in response to these trends.
SECTION 1.0 Trend Analysis
The following environmental and organisational trends will be analysed for both positive and negative impacts on workplace management
• Flexible work forms
• Changing nature of jobs
• Diversity at work
• Leadership
• Ethics.
1.1 Flexible Work Forms
The relationship between work hour flexibility and life balance has generally focused on the flexibility in start/finishing times (flextime) and flexibility in total hours (part-time/casual employment). The key issue with flexible scheduling appears to lie in the perception of control. When flexible schedules are primarily in the interests of the employer, there is no significant improvement in life balance. By contrast, when flexible scheduling options (such as flextime or alternate work schedules) are promoted, there is a perception of schedule control, there is an increase in perceived flexibility was strongly and positively related to life balance.
If the organisation is going to effectively address the life balance issues it is important for us to understand which factors are important and which factors are not. Organisational culture is the most important correlate of life balance and that significant attention should be directed to this area. The other important factor to emerge is work time demands. Total working hours, frequency of after hours calls, and number of abnormal working days represent variables that are significant to life balance. Work time demands are therefore another area that justifies significant attention.
As well as identifying work time demands as an important factor, our organisation needs to consider more than just total working hours when trying to address issues with life balance. Conflict tends to occur when work intrudes into time that is normally associated with other activities. The organisation therefore needs to consider not only the number of working hours, but also the predictability of working hours when implementing time related work policies. The flexibility of working hours is potentially another factor that the organisation should consider when implementing policies, as well as reviewing the length and predictability of work hours.
The fact that the work time demands of IT professionals were shown to be significantly different to non-IT professionals illustrates the importance of understanding not only which factors are important in life balance, but also how they relate to the nature of work that is done within the organisation. In diverse organisations there may be a variety of occupational roles, each with its own unique set of issues. As an example, employees in the accounts department and IT department may both have major issues with life balance, but they may have issues for very different reasons. The accountants may be struggling because of the long hours that they are required to work, whereas the IT professionals may be struggling to cope with the constant disruption to their evening or weekend activities. The challenge for organisations is therefore to recognize these occupational differences and implement tailored policies rather than trying to apply the one-size-fits-all solution.
The organisation should therefore consider occupational differences when implementing any flexible working policies.
The Changing Nature of Work
There are several external forces are frequently identified as contributors to the changing nature of work. These are the demography of the workforce, the globalization of markets, and the laws and regulations governing work and employment relations. The changing demography of the workforce includes the growing presence of women, especially young mothers, in the labour market; increasing racial and ethnic diversity, including a declining majority of white workers; an increasing number of dual-career families; increasing levels of educational attainment; and the aging of the workforce. These demographic trends are well documented; not only do they increase the heterogeneity of the working population, but they also create pressures for expanding existing lines of work and for creating new ones to address the needs of a labour force that were previously handled outside the paid economy, through the family and the community.
Globalizing product markets creates greater and more uncertain competitive pressures, larger labour markets, and the tendency toward specialization in an international division of labour. In order to regain competitiveness, American and European firms have embarked on a quest for increased flexibility. Key components of this flexibility include lean production and quality management, downsizing, the outsourcing of business services, the use of contract labour, and the growing acceptability of strategic alliances, even among competitors.
A full treatment of the effects of the laws and regulations governing work and employment lies well beyond the scope of this analysis. Although we recognize that legal structures and their enforcement play important roles in the workplace.
Diversity at Work
In order to maintain our competitive position, we must provide a work environment of inclusion that enables all employees to use their talents and abilities to their fullest potential, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender or disability. We simply cannot afford to ignore or underestimate the importance and value of diversity to our business success. Our customers recognize that a work force enriched by diversity is one that contributes to the overall success of the company.
Leadership
Good leadership within the organisation is imperative to have the following impact on the company
• Recognise individual and team contributions
• Give positive feedback
• Celebrate accomplishments
• Reinforce teamwork
• Plan, set team goals
• Empower followers
• Encourage initiative
• Delegate authority
• Coach, monitor
• Provide constructive feedback
• Take initiative - take calculated risks, experiment
• Be encouraging of creativity and innovation
• Develop a vision Open to change
• Able to visualise the future, be guided by it and communicate it powerfully to others
• Display commitment through action
• Encourage followers
Ethics
The impact of an ethics policy shall be to serve as the means to enhance the status and promote the advancement of all employees; nurture employees technical and managerial knowledge and skills; improve employees professional careers through the sharing and dispersing of technical information; promote the organisation as a whole; further the understanding of the organisation and foster understanding and respect for individuals within it; develop and improve educational standards; and assist in the continuing development of ethical standards for employees in the organisation. This will lead to a happier and fairer workplace for all employees and ensure that good staff is retained and that those employees who do not meet the ethical standards are let go with little impact on other staff members.

.1 Flexible Work Forms
Interesting and intrinsically rewarding work is the chief determinant of whether people stay in a job or leave. Alternative ways of working such as casual dress, flexi-time or working from home, while increasingly necessary, are poor substitutes for challenging responsibilities. Staff are most likely to stay if their work has a powerful impact on the business and involves state-of-the-art technology. Where routine is inevitable, mix it with more interesting tasks, and devise a skills development plan to provide light at the end of the tunnel. Provide a work process that gives employees authority and control over the work they do, how they do it, the reward they receive for doing it well, and the performance measures by which they are judged. Employers concerned about the new legislation should think seriously about how flexible working could be implemented in their firms. We recognise flexible working as a successful way of attracting and retaining the best staff, regardless of their marital or parental status.
The organisation needs to implement the following policies
• Hire for long-term fit, not short-term need
• Offer ‘cafeteria-style’ work options, not ‘one-size-fits-all’ jobs
• Provide interesting work as well as flexible work arrangements
• Invest in long-term staff career development, not episodic training
• Keep key employees by giving them a measure of freedom.
The Changing Nature of Work
The key benefit of workplace flexibility is that it allows the organisation to use human resources where and when they are needed. Practices such as job rotation, multi-tasking and teamwork benefit employers because the more workers know about the entire work process, the more easily they can be moved to make up for absenteeism or shifts in demand. As well the organisation can use workers’ wide knowledge of the production process in trouble-shooting. These practices also benefit workers, preventing them from being locked into one job and affording them a measure of mobility. To varying degrees, such practices also provide employees with increased responsibility and control in the workplace. Workers thus benefit through greater participation in decision-making in the operation of the firm and thereby a greater sense of making a difference at work, although at the possible cost of increased pressure embodied in heightened responsibility. The provision of such practices can in turn reinforce productivity gains for the employer and serve to attract skilled workers.
The following policies must become the “norm” for the organisation, in order to take full advantage of the spectrum of jobseekers in the current marketplace
• Job sharing
• Part time/full time/casual permanent employees
• Graduate positions
• Traineeships (including mature age).
Diversity at Work
Our organisation’s goal is to promote fair employment practices and to maintain a workplace that encourages employees to reach their highest potential. This goal provides value to the strategic objectives of the company, and the personal objectives of the workforce. Each of us has a role to play to meet this goal. With this in mind, each manager is responsible for achieving our affirmative action goals and for ensuring equal treatment of all employees and job applicants with regard to employment decisions.
In demonstrating its commitment to a discrimination free workplace and to the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity, the organisation has implemented the following practices-
• Merit based recruitment, tenure and promotion - if you have the skills, qualifications and experience required for a particular position, you will have an equal opportunity of being considered for that position. The person selected will be the one who best meets the requirements of the position.
• Training and development - you will be given equal opportunity of access to appropriate training and development based on identified business needs.
• Employment benefits - you will have equal access to the employment benefits relating to your position and employment type.
Equally, organisation expects all employees to behave at all times in a way, which is professional and respectful of their colleagues.
The employees of our organisation are the cornerstone of our continued success, and should be encouraged to fulfil their career goals working at our organisation. To that end, it is our policy to fill vacant positions from our internal resources. External placements should occur after determining that no interested, qualified employee is available.
In keeping with these principles, all employees and contractors are entitled to work in an environment which is free from discrimination, where discrimination means denying an individual fair and equal treatment in employment on grounds other than those based on the requirements of the job. It is our policy to manage our operations with a positive awareness of the spirit and intent of anti-discrimination, EEO and Affirmative Action legislation. In carrying out this policy, we will comply with all current relevant legislation, both State and Federal.
Leadership
The policy for leadership will encompass the following points
• Integrity and Respect - communicating directly and openly; acting ethically and responsibly; acting with honesty and fairness; treating the organisation’s and customer assets and resources with care; and treating all with respect.
• Passion for Excellence - taking responsibility for our services and their continuous improvement; working in teams to bring the best solution; working to eliminate bureaucracy; benchmarking, measuring and reporting on achievements; and developing the capability of our people.
• Accountability - taking ownership and ensuring commitments and deadlines are met; empowering others to achieve clear measurable goals; setting stretch goals; and acting with a sense of urgency.
• Customer Centricity - consistently communicating with and listening to our customers; understanding, anticipating and acting on the needs of our customers; delivering what our customers measure as value; using customer information to improve delivery of products and services; and searching for better ways to service our customers.
• Innovation - having the courage to challenge the status quo; taking calculated risks; acting with speed; being a step ahead in solutions for our customers; seeking simplicity in our solutions and not unnecessary complexity; synthesising global experiences and bringing them to our customers; proactively finding better ways; and leveraging better methods to enhance the result.
Ethics
The corporate purpose of the organisation is to be pre-eminent in the solution of client problems in the field of information systems technology. This demands that we make an absolute commitment to excellence in our contract performance and products. We will achieve our purpose by observing these principles
• We commit to client satisfaction as our most important business objective
• We recognise that organisation’s accomplishments are the work of the people who comprise organisation. We will encourage initiative, recognise individual contribution, treat each person with respect and fairness, and afford ample opportunity for individual growth in organisation
• We in turn will require the highest standards of professionalism and technical competence from our employees
• We will maintain the highest standards of ethics and business conduct and operate at all times within the laws of all countries in which we do business
• We will identify and respond aggressively to new opportunities and commit to success in each undertaking
• Finally, our success as a company requires that we achieve profits and growth commensurate with a leadership position in our industry.
To meet these high standards, the following policies will be implemented
• Employment by other companies. It will be permissible for an employee to hold a second job, as long as it has nothing to do with the companys operations.
• Gifts and gratuities. Accepting gifts, entertainment, or money from outside organisations or agencies that have dealings with the company is usually prohibited. Similarly, offering gifts to others who buy from the company is inappropriate.
• Amount of the gift. Even though the source or recipient of the gift is acceptable, the amount may be too high.
• Type of gifts. Even if the value of the gift or entertainment is acceptable, the type of gift or entertainment may not be. The organisation will actively prohibit use of company funds for gentlemen only or ladies only clubs.
• Romances. Romantic relationships between a buyer for the company and an employee of its supplier will be deemed inappropriate.
• Bribery and kickbacks. The payments are wholly prohibited and offenders will be turned over to the police.
• Discounts. Our policy prohibits employees and their families taking advantage of any “poor service” discounts.
• Business interests. It is forbidden for employees to have personal financial dealings with firms that supply materials to the company or purchase materials from it. Additionally, the organisation prohibits employees from obtaining any personal gain from the use of company facilities, employees, information, or opportunities.
• Investments. Similarly, it is forbidden for employees to invest in firms that supply materials to or purchase them from the company.
• Misuse of confidential information. This would include divulging confidential information to outside organisations, agencies, or individuals; using such information for personal gain; or allowing other employees within the company to use it for personal gain.
• Privacy. Employees will not invade the privacy of others, use passwords of others to gain access to protected information, and read messages intended for others.
• Harassment. The organisation requires all employees to show respect for others. The accessing pornography on the Internet using company facilities, mailing pornographic materials through the company mailroom, or use of the company mailing address to receive responses to personal advertisements.
• Illegal practices. Employees are expressly forbidden from engaging in any activity that is in violation of any law regulating the conduct of the companys business. This includes antitrust rules, misuse of trademarks, stealing trade secrets.
• Other conflicts of interest. No employee may engage in any activity or establishing any relationship(s) that might be construed as a conflict of interest, or that might be a negative reflection on the employees loyalty to the company.
• Disciplinary action. While the severity of the offence will probably dictate the appropriate disciplinary action, violations of our policy will be considered cause for immediate discipline or even dismissal.

Heart Attacks Caused By Unhealthy Lifestyle

Values and attitude are very important, not only in family and social life but also in your work environment. Friends, teachers, co-workers, and relatives can all influence the values you live by. The values of achievement, honesty, and fairness are four of the many values that are important in the work place.
While you are telecommuting, distractions mixed with the lack of self-discipline could be one of the major causes of failure in achieving the goals that are expected from you. Achievement, or feeling the need to achieve is important is the work environment of telecommuting. One should have a clear idea about what goals they are to focus on at what time. A large effort toward a main goal usually involves a large deal of time, thought and effort. Telecommuters are expected to work just as many hours off site as they would on site, if not more. One can increase his or her level of achievement basically by being tightly focused and putting more time and effort toward their work.
Honesty and fairness when telecommuting can go two ways. One way is, is the employee doing the work that should be, and how is the manager to know if he/she is being honest about their work. Having the advantage of flexibility and the disadvantage of many more distractions can be a hard combination to handle. Some managers are hesitant to use telecommuting because they are concerned of loosing control when the employee is off site. The second way these values can be applied is in asking if the employee is receiving the benefits and recognition they should be receiving. Employees are worried they will be left out of deserved benefits or important decisions. People must believe that the organization will treat them fairly when they are off site, and supervisors in return must believe that the employees will remain honest and productive.

metamorphasis by Kafka
We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like metamorphasis by Kafka even at the eleventh hour. The matter is that we posses the greatest base of expert writers. Our staff of freelance writers includes approximately 300 experienced writers are at your disposal all year round. They are striving to provide the best ever services to the most desperate students that have already lost the hope for academic success. We offer the range of the most widely required, however, not recommended for college use papers. It is advisable to use our examples like metamorphasis by Kafka in learning at public-education level. Imprisonment comes in many forms and is frequently experienced by many people. The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka is a story with a theme about imprisonment it symbolically shows many imagery and objects that represent imprisonment and implies that physical, financial, and obligation imprisonments all exist in life. Using the characters of the Samsa family, Kafka creates situations that resemble imprisonment. These imprisonments are what confine people and their freedom. They create boundaries, borders, and walls that keep a person from outside intervention.
The Metamorphosis begins with Gregor in the process of turning into an insect. Insects are despised; they are looked upon as Gods disgusting creatures. The fact that Gregor is turning into one is like him becoming unwanted. This foreshadows the story by portraying an outcast disapproved by the family. As an insect, Gregor horrifies his family, which results in their not recognizing him as a member of the family anymore. He is blocked off from the human world because hes different. Lying in bed, Gregor looks out the window at the overcast sky and hears rain drops beating on the window gutter. The rain symbolizes obstacles that limit Gregors freedom. He is stuck in the apartment like a caged animal, and is late for work. He tries to get up, and is unsuccessful a number of times. His human senses are still with him but he doesnt realize that he is trapped inside a vermins body. He finally gets up and soon realizes that his door is locked. Gregor no longer has the ability to open it. He tries to use his mouth, but its very difficult to open the locks with no teeth. His room is like a prison, Gregor cannot go anywhere. He is stuck inside an insect body, which is held confined by the locked door and is covered up by the rainy weather. The locked door and the gloomy gray atmosphere help symbolize and make notice that Gregor is physically imprisoned.
Furthermore, the sofa in Gregors room symbolizes restrictions and confinements. The sofa and the sheets that took Gregor four hours to assemble help barricade him from his mother and sister. They are there so his sister and mother will not be appalled at Gregors conditions. They are there to hide the insect side of Gregor from the human world. This is why the setting of the story never leaves the Samsas apartment. As for the other furniture, they represent the human side of Gregor. While hes an insect form the outside, Gregor is still human on the inside. He wants the furniture to remain in their place for they define him as human. He wants the old chest where hed kept all his tools not to be moved. He wants his writing desk, where he did all his homework, to stay there, as a memory of the human childhood that still exists in him. Though the furniture prevents Gregors insect body from moving freely, he still wants them there to represent the humanness inside him. Mentally Gregor is human, and physically he is just an insect. Thus, the furniture acts as barriers in both senses barriers to prevent insect part of Gregor from spreading. As a twist acts as the barriers to hold in the humanness used by Kafka, when the furniture of Gregor, it can be said that it is protecting Gregor from the insects that his family members are slowly turning into. This twist shows that imprisonment is not always bad. It can be applied to protect good things.
In addition to the weather and the furniture, the food that Grete brings to Gregor exemplifies Gregor’s imprisonment. As Gregor lives in his constrained room, his sister Grete would often bring him food. Even though its Grete good intention and Gregor likes the food, the spoiled food resembles something that is not wanted by the human society. Half-decayed vegetables and rotten cheese that Grete gives Gregor is undesired thing that people throw away. Theyre meals people serve to outcasts and prisoners, and Gregor is a prisoner whos dying. Hurt by the pain of the apple thats stuck under one of his wings, Gregor breaks down slowly in his room. The apple is something, which portrays the pain that Gregor is suffering. Gregor lives in loneliness, in his own room. He is enslaved, and the only way for him to be free is to die in vacant and peaceful meditation As a Round character in the story, Gregors character develops from being enslaved into being freed. At first sight of Gregors condition, everyone treats him like a stranger and avoids him. Grete treats Gregor like hes a disease. She carries the glass of milk, which Gregor has drank, not will infect with her bare hands... but with a cloth Many times, the sight of Gregor frightens Grete and she slams the door on him. The numerous door slams, symbolize that ser Gregor apart from the other family members. It brings forth the isolation that Gregor has with the human world. Trapped by the insect shell, Gregors voice cannot break free. The loss of his voice and vision also symbolize Gregors imprisonment. Inside the insect shell, Gregor lives alone where no one can hear him. His vision slowly deteriorates. From his room, even the hospital across the street, which he used to execrate for being all too often before his eyes, was now quite beyond his rage of vision. Gregor no longer can look out the window and see fine details like he used to see.
Imprisonment no longer exists. The world is full of misfits that people endure each and everyday. Kafka shows many ways for one to be isolated from the world. Time, money, and duties all can be viewed as a form of imprisonment or enslavement. It is not until a tragic death that one can fully escape this horrible captivity.

My English class just finished reading and discussing Romeo and Juliet
by William Shakespeare. For the past couple of weeks my class and I have learned quite a bit. Life in the days of Romeo and Juliet was unfair.
One example of how unfair life was then is that Romeo was in love with a beautiful girl named Rosalynn but she didn’t notice him. He would try to impress her with his wealth by buying her gifts. He would also look deep in her eyes to show that he really cared. Romeo even called her endearing names such as sweetheart and honey. Romeo would try everything to get her to like him.
Another proof that life was unfair then is that when the Caplets’ servant invited Romeo to the party, Benvolio and Mercucio made him finally give in. Romeo told them that he did not wish to attend, but they pushed him into it any ways. They would tell him that he needed to get over Rosalynn and when he didn’t want to. When they arrived at the party Romeo had changed his mind and refused to go in, Benvolio and Mercucio forced him to. When Romeo eventually did enter the party his friends told him he had to mingle with the other guests.
A final substantiation that life in those days was unfair is that when Romeo and Juliet fell in love, they knew they could never see each other. Their familys did not get, along so they couldn’t tell their parents of their love. They couldn’t see each other in public because if someone were to see, it would cause great difficulties. Once Romeo got exiled they had no hope of seeing one another again. They also could never start a family of their own.
In conclusion, it would have been unfair to be living during the era of Shakespeare’s famous young lovers. Life in the United States is very different than life in the fourteenth century in Italy because even if your parents don’t agree upon two lover’s marriage, they can still get married and tell people. In today’s world there are laws that prevent people from being exiled, so that isn’t a possibility

Nas VS Jay Z
I think that the beef (misunderstanding) between the well known New York based rappers Nas and Jay Z is one of hip-hops most unforgettable. But of course I think that the most prominent beef is the one between the legendary pac and Notorious B.I.G. When a misunderstanding happens between rappers they usually go at it physically and then get in trouble with authorities, so they go at each other in their music. They both grew up in harsh project surroundings in the New York area. They both grew up on the influence of hip-hop, but did you know that Nas actually started rapping at the age of !
According to New Yorks mixtape djs Funkmaster Flex and Dj Kay Slay announced that Nas had officially won the lyrical battle. But you see the thing is that whoever won the mixtape battle would be declared the king of New York as in lyrical supremacy. But Nas said on his song last real nigga alive ,Theres more shit than wanting to be this king of new york shit. He thrashed Jay Z on his single Ether which was a reply to his opponents song Takeover. It all started out when Jay Z performed one of his songs Takeover which was sung at Hot 7s Summer Jam concert in June, with which he said Nas don’t want it with Hov. But before the official songs came out on their albums, there were a few unofficial radio songs. Nass reply to Jay Zs insult was called Super Ugly which aired on most radio stations and was a favorite. I think that when it comes to lyrics Nas is at the top of the game, he says on his single Ether, Burner at the side of your dome/ come out of my throne/ I got this locked since 1/ I am the truest/ Name a rapper that I aint influence/ Gave yall chapters, but now I keep my eyes on the Judas Allegedly the Judas is Jay Z.

We are ready to represent the best custom paper writing assistance that can cope with any task like Skateboarding even at the eleventh hour. Skateboarding
Life is full of adventures and surprises. Being able to find out what you do best is very exciting. Many people work at jobs they hate, and some people live the life of their dreams. Considering that I don’t want to become a person doing something that they dislike for the rest of their lives, I have already found what I love to do and what I will do for the rest of my life. Skateboarding is very challenging, and I always like a challenge. Whether it’s learning a new trick or doing a trick over an obstacle, it’s all challenging. Trying to learn new tricks is hard, but in the end, it is never regretted. Landing new tricks was the most fun; however, it took lots of patience and work. After landing tricks, or just skating around, you start to make new friends. A lot of people notice you if you land a big trick, and then you start to get noticed. Even if you don’t skate big obstacles, you still make friends. Every time I go skate, I prepare myself for the new challenges, tricks, and friends to meet because skateboarding is a way of life.
Skating alone is very hard; furthermore, making friends helps a lot. Making friends is a must, and it is very easy. Everybody is pretty much friends with everybody. Age doesn’t matter, because we all have one thing in common, which is skateboarding. No one has to be the same age to have fun with someone else doing the same thing. I have friends that are 7 years old to 0 years old, and neither one is more important than the other; however, sometimes the older skaters can drive you around to other skate spots, but that still does not make anybody more valuable than another. I can just film somebody else, help somebody else, or applause for someone when they land a trick, and a friend is made. Skateboarding brings a lot of people together.
Just riding around on your skateboard is fun; however, learning to do some tricks is a lot more fun. That is exactly what I do everyday when I go skating. This makes skating so much more fun. Learning new tricks can be hard, but in the end, it’s very much worth it. When I first started skateboarding, I learned an ollie, which is the very first trick you learn because it is the most basic and is used to learn every other trick. From there, I would just watch skateboard videos and try to learn from the pros. Until I could do a trick, trying to figure out how they did it was the hard part, but when I finally found out how it was done I would become excited and try to land it for hours. Whenever I would land the trick, I’d become very proud of myself and practice the trick more. When you land a trick you have never done before, it forces you to want to learn more. After you learn a trick you can show it to friends and show off if you wanted to. It’s just so much fun to learn new tricks. New tricks can be made up or you can just learn tricks that have already been made. Skateboarding has an endless possibility of tricks to be made. There are just so many variations of one trick, or sometimes you can mix two or more tricks together and you just go crazy with it. When you learn new tricks, you can bring those tricks to new obstacles which make skateboarding even more fun.
Write my paper for me!!!
While learning new tricks, of course, there are harder ones and easy ones. That is what makes skateboarding challenging. Once you learn a trick, you usually will take it up a notch and try it down a bigger stair set, or try a bigger handrail. When you have friends around it helps to get you pumped up; however, sometimes you can get nervous if too many people are around because you don’t want to fall and embarrass yourself, but its all part of skateboarding. I love to try new tricks on new obstacles, because when you land it, feel like you are the best and you can learn anything. The challenge makes it harder; moreover, also makes it more worth it when you land it. If there was no challenge, then it would get boring For instance, once you learn a kickflip, you will be happy that you can land it on the flat ground. Later on, it will get boring, and also get very easy, so then you would try it down maybe a 4 stair. That makes it harder because you have to catch the trick in midair and keep it underneath your feet. When you land, the impact is much greater; furthermore, you will need more balance when you land and you have to be ready to absorb the impact. Just picking myself up and trying to land the trick over and over makes you want to land it more and when you do, the feeling is indescribable. Anything is possible in skateboarding. I always keep these words in me, “Where there is a will, there is a way”; because it helps me realize that you can overcome any challenge that is blocking your way. Trying to become the best of your ability is the most fun, yet is also the hardest challenge there is. Just being able to keep making skateboarding harder and giving yourself a challenge once in a while is fun.
Discovering skateboarding was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I started skateboarding, because I loved it, and that’s how you progress, loving what you’re doing. The days that I don’t skate I am preparing myself for the effort it takes to pick myself up and try a trick over and over again till I land it. I think when you land a trick, that is what keeps you going in skateboarding; likewise, makes you want to go pro, or make you want to go even further in skateboarding. It makes you go beyond your natural abilities and make friends along the way. Just being able to jump on your board, make new friends, do whatever you want to do, no one telling you what to do or when to do it, and knowing when you land a new trick, you conquered your board, your board didn’t conquer you.

It was the 100’s mid-July when a newly formed family decided to go west. The newly-weds Henry and Marie Torey went to claim a piece of the Great Prairies that awaited settlers from the east. As crops were seeded, grew, and harvested, so did the family of this hard working couple. The Torey’s had success with wheat in the early years, but their children would be the seedtime. The drought this family faced was what gave them the ability to prosper through the ruff times. In the end it would not be the farm, that they all worked so hard to build, but the family that would be this couples greatest harvest. The years past and the family seeds grew, as did this empire that the family was creating.
The seeds of this family looked up to their parents and at young ages they worked along their side. The boys worked in the field with their father and the girls helped their mother. Henry and Marie were growing wheat with intangible qualities and determination. These children would have the same determination that Henry and Marie had when they pioneered west.
Yet his sons and daughters were developing qualities that would make them as hard and dependable as the wheat they grew. That intangible something that had made their parents pioneers, that made Henry drive his hoe into the soil with such determination in his boyhood, that had driven Marie to spend a winter alone on the plains, was growing in them. (Storey 17)

Henry could not see his family was in a drought. All he saw was his twenty-five years of hard work. Henry and Marie now had a family of seven boys and three girls. They owned three thousand acres of land more than a hundred head of cattle. Henry reached his life long goal, “A thousand acres of wheat” (Storey 140). At this time one of his sons questioned his father’s goal. David was now thirteen years of age and wanted to see beyond “A thousand acres of wheat” (Storey 140). How could this be the end of a dream, was there no more to life than just planting wheat? David recognised the drought and started to look elsewhere for answers. In his quest David would be the child to lead them from the land. Years of drought destroyed all that they had built, David led the family to Saskatoon and a new beginning. Just as the parents had carefully planned to come west from Ontario, David was planning the next move for the family. David tells his mother what he has planned and how he has come to those decisions.
“If the crop is good next year some of the family may decide to stay with farming. If it isn’t they will have no choice, for the owner of the farm will not finance another crop and the creditors will claim everything of value on the farm. My money is safe, however; it is mine and in no way connected with the farm. I have papers to show how I got nearly every cent of it… “Weasel hides,” he continued, “not wheat, will be our salvation. If the crop fails I will spend the money to help us re-establish in Saskatoon. If the crop is good, and the family decide to stay with the land, I will go to town next fall to attend school on my own.” (Storey 17)
The family’s drought had ended and now it was harvest, all that they had been through gave them the skill for this knew life in Saskatoon. Henry and Marie offspring were a bountiful crop.
“What’s happened to young Torey?” the foreman asked early in December. “He hauls more fuel than any two of our other truckers.”
By early spring James had a second truck and his first one was paid for…
Robert was firmly established in the automobile repair business. “As long as people drive cars I’ll have a job,”…
Harry was now on the permanent staff of the road machinery company. He was a set-up man and sub-foreman. Not only was his job secure, but he had every hope of rising in the company…
Yet they had fought their way from the land to successful lives in other areas during the depths of the depression when drought and crop failures made human labour the cheapest of all commodities. Good men were” a dime a dozen”; thus the two oldest boys had proven that they were better that good. (Storey 06)
All the Torey children would not only survive but prosper. Each one of them ploughed along forging a path just as their parents did. Their parent’s and the land had taught them much and they would use all that they had learned to pioneer their lives.
Henry was afraid that all he had taught his family was how to be farmers. He was wrong for he and his wife had done much more than that. He was blinded by the land and could not see the real crop for the wheat.
“ Yes,” she said, “and there will be no drought of other ills that wheat is heir to.”
“I was blind,” the man continued, almost sadly, “not to have seen that our children were the real harvest, and that the wheat didn’t matter.”
“No, dear, the wheat was the seedtime; and the drought was the summer; and now in our September they are ripening, and the harvest will be good.” (Storey 0)
Henry and Marie had a great harvest, this was not “A thousand acres of wheat” (Storey 140), but much more, more than even two thousand or a million (Storey), for they had a family that could conquer anything.
