It was the 100’s mid-July when a newly formed family decided to go west. The newly-weds Henry and Marie Torey went to claim a piece of the Great Prairies that awaited settlers from the east. As crops were seeded, grew, and harvested, so did the family of this hard working couple. The Torey’s had success with wheat in the early years, but their children would be the seedtime. The drought this family faced was what gave them the ability to prosper through the ruff times. In the end it would not be the farm, that they all worked so hard to build, but the family that would be this couples greatest harvest. The years past and the family seeds grew, as did this empire that the family was creating.

The seeds of this family looked up to their parents and at young ages they worked along their side. The boys worked in the field with their father and the girls helped their mother. Henry and Marie were growing wheat with intangible qualities and determination. These children would have the same determination that Henry and Marie had when they pioneered west.

Yet his sons and daughters were developing qualities that would make them as hard and dependable as the wheat they grew. That intangible something that had made their parents pioneers, that made Henry drive his hoe into the soil with such determination in his boyhood, that had driven Marie to spend a winter alone on the plains, was growing in them. (Storey 17)

Henry could not see his family was in a drought. All he saw was his twenty-five years of hard work. Henry and Marie now had a family of seven boys and three girls. They owned three thousand acres of land more than a hundred head of cattle. Henry reached his life long goal, “A thousand acres of wheat” (Storey 140). At this time one of his sons questioned his father’s goal. David was now thirteen years of age and wanted to see beyond “A thousand acres of wheat” (Storey 140). How could this be the end of a dream, was there no more to life than just planting wheat? David recognised the drought and started to look elsewhere for answers. In his quest David would be the child to lead them from the land. Years of drought destroyed all that they had built, David led the family to Saskatoon and a new beginning. Just as the parents had carefully planned to come west from Ontario, David was planning the next move for the family. David tells his mother what he has planned and how he has come to those decisions.

“If the crop is good next year some of the family may decide to stay with farming. If it isn’t they will have no choice, for the owner of the farm will not finance another crop and the creditors will claim everything of value on the farm. My money is safe, however; it is mine and in no way connected with the farm. I have papers to show how I got nearly every cent of it… “Weasel hides,” he continued, “not wheat, will be our salvation. If the crop fails I will spend the money to help us re-establish in Saskatoon. If the crop is good, and the family decide to stay with the land, I will go to town next fall to attend school on my own.” (Storey 17)

The family’s drought had ended and now it was harvest, all that they had been through gave them the skill for this knew life in Saskatoon. Henry and Marie offspring were a bountiful crop.

“What’s happened to young Torey?” the foreman asked early in December. “He hauls more fuel than any two of our other truckers.”

By early spring James had a second truck and his first one was paid for…

Robert was firmly established in the automobile repair business. “As long as people drive cars I’ll have a job,”…

Harry was now on the permanent staff of the road machinery company. He was a set-up man and sub-foreman. Not only was his job secure, but he had every hope of rising in the company…

Yet they had fought their way from the land to successful lives in other areas during the depths of the depression when drought and crop failures made human labour the cheapest of all commodities. Good men were” a dime a dozen”; thus the two oldest boys had proven that they were better that good. (Storey 06)

All the Torey children would not only survive but prosper. Each one of them ploughed along forging a path just as their parents did. Their parent’s and the land had taught them much and they would use all that they had learned to pioneer their lives.

Henry was afraid that all he had taught his family was how to be farmers. He was wrong for he and his wife had done much more than that. He was blinded by the land and could not see the real crop for the wheat.

“ Yes,” she said, “and there will be no drought of other ills that wheat is heir to.”

“I was blind,” the man continued, almost sadly, “not to have seen that our children were the real harvest, and that the wheat didn’t matter.”

“No, dear, the wheat was the seedtime; and the drought was the summer; and now in our September they are ripening, and the harvest will be good.” (Storey 0)

Henry and Marie had a great harvest, this was not “A thousand acres of wheat” (Storey 140), but much more, more than even two thousand or a million (Storey), for they had a family that could conquer anything.
