Joyce Carol Oates was born June 16, 18 in Lock Port New York, on a farm outside of town. She lived in a rural area located in upstate New York. Mrs. Oates’ family, like many of her neighbors at the time, worked hard to just make enough money to survive. Growing up, she loved to read and write.
