George and Lennie were migrant farm workers who travelled from farm to farm in America, (California) during the 10’s. This was an era in United States history called the Great Depression when jobs were very scarce and the agricultural was in dire straits because of the great dust storms of the Mid-West. Jobs the labourers would do included bucking hay bales and general farm work which involved hard physical labour. They were only paid $.50 or $.00 a day, which adds up to about $50.00 a month. Their jobs were short term because, once the boss of the ranch decides that he cannot pay all of the workers, or he thinks that there are too many workers, then he will just fire some of the workforce because he knows that later on he will get some other workers coming in looking for a job. Once a job is complete, he can fire the workers because he does not need them any more. At the end of a hard day’s work, the men would have had little comfort in the evenings. They lived in a bunk house as if they were animals. The bunk house that they slept in had cracks in the walls and the roof, so that it was just as cold inside the barn as it was outside. The rain would have been able to get inside the bunk house. The walls were whitewashed and the floor was unpainted. This was bad because they had little comfort and, the bunk house did not feel like a proper home. In three of the walls there were small windows and in the other wall there was a solid door with a wooden latch. Against the wall there were eight bunks, five of them made up with blankets and the other three were not. These straw beds often contained lice; George found this out when he first came to the new ranch, because he found some lice killer spray on the shelf over his bed, which the last person who had worked at the farm had used. Over each bunk there was an apple box nailed to the wall so that there was a shelf for the occupant’s personal belongings. This shows that the occupants of the bunk house had few personal belongings because they had to be able to carry them from ranch to ranch. Near one wall there was a black cast-iron stove with the pipe going up through the ceiling. In the centre of the room there was a large table which was used for playing card games. When the sun rose in the morning, flies shot out of the beams which showed that all sorts of creatures and bugs lived in the bunk house with the ranch workers. The food that was given to them was pretty basic and included boiled potatoes, eggs, bread and porridge. All of the food had something wrong with it, for example, the eggs had “red bits” in them and the boiled potatoes had black heads and spots all over them.
