Right off the bat I can name some negative aspects of the women going into the mills to work. The hours of working were outrageous. Never in my life would I work those hours. I think that the women were taken advantage of because they put in hard hours and got paid nothing. In the social aspect Lucy said “The intervals were spent frolicking around among the spinning-frames, teasing and talking to the older girls, or entertaining ourselves with games and stories in a corner, or exploring, with the overseer’s permission, the mysteries of the carding-room, the dressing room, and the weaving room.” Obviously they did get to socialize with one another while at work. Lucy’s sister Emilie met with girls every fortnight that worked with and they would discuss their writings with one another. They did make friendships with one another since they spent so many hours with each other a day. That may not have happened if they were all at home still working.


The church did get involved with these young women working. The town’s ministers were very much involved. They would join the women in their social gatherings and supports their literary efforts. They showed that they could work long hours just like the men could. In the cotton mill they did know more then the men did about making clothes and such, but yet they still wouldn’t get paid as much as them which was pretty unfair. Women would do anything back then to work even if it meant working strenuous hours. “I never cared much for machinery,” Lucy states. “The buzzing and hissing and whizzing of pulleys and rollers and spindles and flyers around me often grew tiresome.
